Completely agree with David that the worst thing the Liberal gov't did was to go back on their promise of electoral reform. I participated in the cross-Canada consultations and was furious when they just threw up their hands and said "no change."

@@AdamBladeTaylor Electoral reform isn't a silver bullet. Most importantly, I don't see a path towards it federally, it has to happen provincially first.
The MBNDP EDA recently demanded the MBNDP gov a citizen's assembly on ER, so maybe there's hope in Manitoba.

    • @acanuckvoice5474

Why is it, that people are unaware that it was voted down, and the consensus of the citizens was that weren't interested in "electoral reform". All one has to do is look at B.C. who had the opportunity at the provincial level and the answer was no. Secondly, the notion of electoral reform came from a right wing think tank and it was pushed and pushed until young people showed interest. This was a ploy to weaken Canada's government.

@@spiguy It won't fix everything, but it CAN vastly improve the situation by letting those the people want actually get elected rather than just giving it all to the first person to hit a threshold.
And it could have been done by the Liberals, but they blew their chance. It won't happen until likely the NDP gets enough of a majority to push it through.
Conservatives will NEVER support it, as that directly challenges their power.

What an idiotic thing to say particularly with what the liberals have introduced in bill c-63. House arrest on suspicion that a person may say something offensive in the future, with the parameters of said offensive speech to be defined some time later... Oh and how about the part where the tribunal to be set up by this bill will be allowed to hold hearings in secret? The liberals have screwed up everything they have touched, how anyone can look at them and think they are worthy of anything beyond being shown the door is amazing to me.

Um, what do you mean? I don't think he does. Sorry if this hurts your feelings but Canadian Liberals are neoLiberals, they are pro-corporate, anti-worker, just with a bit more masking, something like the Democrats of the USA. If anything, look at NDP and their coalition, how they push Liberals to pass social supports that they wouldn't do without NDP demanding it for their support, things like Pharmacare and dental, for example.
Instead of defending Liberals, focus on party policies. NDP is the 3rd most popular party and it was essentially started by Tommy Douglas, Father of Medicare for All in Canada. I know Jagmeet isn't that strong of a leader or speaker, but again, look at the policies - they are pro-worker and pro-ecological sustainability. Both focuses we need in the 21st century. I'd like to see NDP have a leadership race and if a good, forward thinking candidate, who may be in Indigenous, too, were to rise up, I would approve of that, like Premier of Manitoba, Wab Kinew.
Greens are even more pro-worker and environment, but too far down in popularity to have a chance at forming government in 2025, if they even get a few more seats in the House that would be an improvement.

And you know what, PP appeals to some Canadians and they don't even know why. My mom is 87, very astute, very informed, does her own investing to this day and does well and when she tried to tear down the Liberals today, I ignored her animosity to the Liberals and instead asked her what she thinks PP has for her to look forward to, what she thinks of a future with him and she had nothing to say. She didn't know his plans (not that many do because he's pretty closed mouth about that),doesn't know what he's done if anything.....complete silence. I was amazed. So there's a good example of how Con voters haven't got a clue but they've memorized his accusatory soundbites.
And while you say you don't want Trudeau, I made a point of actually looking at the various benefits that have come to Canadians since 2016 and there have been over 33 policy benefits that have come to us and I haven't even included this budget. Everything from no interest student loans to $40,000 tax free savings accounts for home buyers, to dental care for poor children and low income seniors to a one time tax on big banks and insurance companies, not to mention they kept the wolf from the door for many Canadians during covid. They've done a lot of good for Canadians and now they're turning their attention to the housing issue. A little late, but their doing it. And they've been doing all that with that little weasel screeching in their ears and clawing at their heels the whole time. He's sure not going to be kind to people. My only hope, is that every policy that he decides to cancel, hurts more Conservatives than Liberal voters because frankly they deserve it for giving up their brains to be controlled by Mr. PP.

I once watched a discussion with a guy who had studied the differences between conservatives and liberals. The upshot was that the conservatives tend to be hesitant and less inclined to try new things and to take 'chances' and favoured an adherence to what is 'old' and familiar, ie the old ways. Whereas the liberal mindset was more open to trying new ideas and making the effort to move the system forward by experimentation and pilot projects. I think we've seen that same difference work out on both sides of the border.

I know there is a decent number of Canadians who will never vote Conservative, they know the Con policies are horrendous anti-worker, pro-corporate garbage and there is nothing Conservatives can say or do to get them to vote for them.
But maybe that's why the young voters are the big focus? How many 18-25 year olds didn't get a chance to or barely got to vote in a Federal election once 2025 rolls around? Will they do their research and vote for a socially progressive party? I don't think you can teach many old dogs new tricks, so an old Conservative voter is locked in Conservative - but the 18-25 demo is up in the air.
Maybe that's why it is very good idea for The Rational National to highlight PP and the Cons more! Young people can learn. Everybody can learn, but especially those less familiar with voting.

The "electricity...copper wire...sky" thing kills me every time because I believe he's attempting to conjure images of the work Nikola Tesla and Alexander Graham Bell did in laying the foundations for the electrical/communication grid we have today.
It exemplifies how little PP actually knows about how things function in our society/civilization.
Tesla & Bell were more akin to an electrical engineer than an electrician. But even that isn't close; they were masterminds, genius inventors and creators of technology. Without their contributions the entire human civilization would likely not be where it is.
Not to poop on electricians, their job is integral and important but it's a bit lofty to compare the guy following the manual/procedures vs the guys who created the tech the manuals/procedures are written for.

  • @Mike-ef5gk

Both candidates have their flaws. For me, being a first-generation Canadian with immigrant parents, we've always been liberal, but I've started to question that because of how unaffordable everything has become. Housing, food, gas, everything. It's a mess. It wasn't this way consistently, and even though Pierre Poilievre didn't do much as housing minister (I don't think he was a housing minister for very long though to do much work - I believe he still built 90000 homes according to a recent question period), I can remember housing during the Harper government made it somewhat tolerable to own a home. At least I remember that finding a job in this market wasn't impossible. After 9 years of Trudeau saying the same verbatim, I'm tired of it because he hasn't delivered on anything he's told.
We can't keep blaming the global economy for the state of Canada. From what it sounds like, I don't believe the conservatives have much of an environmental plan, which I find important to have. At the same time, I'm afraid I have to disagree that hiking up a carbon tax by 23% on April 1 is the way to reduce emissions. Entire countries have been established by increases in taxes. The "carbon rebate" Trudeau says gives more money to Canadians, has been debunked by the parliamentary budget officer, who has stated that they spun his fact to benefit them and 6/10 Canadians lose money even with the rebate.
Some key things that the Liberal Party brings up are their building 4 million homes. They want to build this by 2031, and this goal includes private company commercial real estate, so I'm not really sure it's as ambitious as we think.
Unfortunately, neither politician has an excellent social record. Pierre Poilievre voted against gay marriage, which was confirmed when he was 25, and although he apologizes for it now, we never really know how he feels about it (but his dad is gay, so Idk). Trudeau on the other hand has had a lot of financial scandals with trust funds, he also, like you folks said is pretty fake, and let's not forget about his blatant cultural appropriation and blackface. I'd say neither politicians are the best when it comes to their public record.
    Party Poll Favors:
    Conservatives: 43%
    Liberals: 23%
    NDP: 18%
    Bloc Quebecois: 7%
    Green Party: 5%
The remaining 4% were not comfortable voting. I would love to see what other people think and if anyone is in a similar boat to me, where they're at a crossroads but leaning more conservative.
