    Philip. I've been a fan of you for a long time now, and have also suffered from similar sleeping issues. Honestly, your sleep disruption videos have connected with me like nothing I've ever watched before. The way you explain things, the way you talk about how your mind tricks you into thinking you are visualising things correctly when you are in fact not - it's really made me understand dreams and the thoughts you get in them a lot better. Thank you. I feel like I understand my brain a lot better after seeing this.

    • @noahk
      @noahk 2 года назад +1

      I completely agree. Especially with the Tetris-effec thing. freaky stuff. Also with the thing where I try to make a fake dream with weird scenes that don't make any sense in order to trick my brain into falling asleep.

    I don't get that music thing you're talking about, but when I'm REALLY tired I sometimes have my mind start "remembering" random conversations that never happened. Not even conversations. Just voices that I know (friends', family's, etc.) saying complete nonsense. I literally put no effort into it; it's as if it's not even me doing it, it's like I'm listening to it actually happening (except it's in my head, obviously). My favourite one was when my best friend said "your Facebook almost killed me".

    • @AA-nt2yp
      @AA-nt2yp 7 лет назад +3

      Well, it's probably kind of same thing. I had exactly same thing with that music, and when i had that conversation stuff once, when i haven't slept for a long time. Music thing is like right before you sleep; you are feeling like you are really close to dream.

    • @allupro
      @allupro 7 лет назад +14

      I actually get those kind of "conversations" too. Another interesting thing that happens to me, is when I'm really tired, it sounds like a TV is on in another room with a talkshow/news broadcast playing. I never discern what is said, and when I realize the sound is playing it fades off.

    • @kalinunesferreira815
      @kalinunesferreira815 7 лет назад +6

      Same here, allupro. The difference for me is that it doesn't fade. It continues there, like there was something really loud or people screaming to each other...
      I can stop it most of the times by making an actual sound, like snapping my fingers, so I can differ my thoughts from reallity... It's scary when it isn't enough to get rid of it tho...

    Six years since i first watched this video, and gotta say, it resonates with me more and more withg age. All the tricks to get yourself to sleep, tried, failed, and some succeded, over many years.
    Similar to your music arriving, the best feeling when im nearly fallen asleep, is that abstract arf of anything and everything just appears without me having to think of it, and fatser than i could have imagined it. All to do then, is to wait for sleep to embrace me

    So glad to hear someone else has the "listening to a radio" experience. Everyone I've spoken to about it thinks I'm mad.
    Best way I've found to trigger it is to lay still and listen as if you're trying to hear a faint sound in the distance and see what your brain comes up with. Often it starts with familiar peoples voices saying entirely random words or phrases and sometimes I can get it to produce random musical rhythms. The closer to completely random and entirely "unconjured" the sounds feel, the closer you are to your own personal concert!

    The explanation given when you were describing your endless/pointless thoughts and ponderings that prevented you from falling asleep is the same reason I have trouble simply falling asleep, as it often takes me an hour or two sitting in bed before I can drift off.
    Interesting though to hear about your subconscious and that faint radio that begins to play when sleep is near. I personally haven't experienced anything like this, but sometimes when I'm nearing sleep, it feels as though my eyes start to focus heavily on something, or that it's straining hard to see something in the distance (even if my eyes are closed). It's hard to explain it, as both those examples aren't quite accurate, but it's the best relatable sensation I can give.

    I really enjoy this sleep series thing. I'm not dealing with those kinds of experiences with dreaming etc. but it's very interesting to see this though. Especially since you seem to deal with it in such a calm and rational manner. I'm very similar in that regard. I rarely if ever panic, or worry about something. I'm younger though so that might also play a part but it's nice seeing someone with a similar mindset.

    really cool to hear these stories and your thoughts as i often experience strange and surreal things like this and relating to dreams
    i have OCD and this often manifests in my dreams by experiencing only things that make sense to me and my imagination, but without me even knowing it in the moment
    one of the most common odd dream phenomenon i come across is the sensation that im not the same person i am in real life in my dream
    like for example i might not know some of the things i do normally, have different memories, feel differently about certain things, know people ive actually never seen before, etc.
    its all very interesting but at the same time it can leave you feeling like you're losing your mind.

    I love these videos because I will rarely have something similar to these, but one thing that I noticed I can do (which I'm not sure if a lot of people can or not) is put my self in a sort of half asleep state. I do it during school and I can listen to lessons and get the general idea, but I'm also still asleep. If I'm asked a question while asleep in this state, I wake up and answer them like I wasn't even asleep. It's also fun to have dreams like this because they seem to be more vivid than a dream while I'm sleeping normally.

    It is scarry how relatable these videos are for me... also, the "radio station", I have it all the time, as some sort of side effect of training mysf so hard to imagine stuff, the thing you said about your game, when I draw, I'm just tracing over what I visualise, but I most of the time have to simplifie it a lot, I'm not a great drawer, I also imzgine what I wright about and play the games I design before putting them in game design documents, or re dive in an old game I imagined and forgot about, by browsing my hdd.

    A weird thing happens to me every night that prevents me from falling asleep the first time around. About 3 minutes after my body has basically fallen into that "sleep mode" you were talking about (I always lay in bed and fall asleep completely still), and my eyes have fallen asleep, my mind thinks that my body is falling (or something like that) and I feel like I'm rushing through the air and about to hit the ground, and this happens every single night. Its really strange, and is the only reason I've had a problem sleeping since I was 7.

    Its hard to explain why but I love these videos, the style you make them in and the music creates a nice sense of nostalgia. I remember when I was younger experiencing something like the music you heard, it'd be a distant sound that sounded almost like the incomprehensible background chatter of a call centre, I must have been around 6 or 7 at the time. It looks pretty stupid or fake writing it out, but this video really brought me back to the time as a child where I struggled with sleep.

    Thank you a lot for this video Phillip! Even though I have never suffered from serious sleep disruption, I can really relate to this video, and it is nice and inspiring to hear someone else put words on it.
    I guess the tetris-effect is kind of what happens to me when I have fever dreams. In my dream I have to do some never ending task and somehow that task is connected with my sleep. I had one where i had to complete impossible levels in Portal, and I would only get "rewarded" with sleep if I completed them. When i woke up and went to the toilet I felt like i hadn't slept at all. Even though I knew it was irational I just couldn't get the connection between Portal and sleep out of my head, and the dream continued when i went to bed again.
    I have also had ones which included math or playing music or other things i don't remember as well.
    I also expirience the "hearing music" when i am about to fall asleep. I rarely notice it beginning but I often notice it disapearing if I become more awake. I also find it very comfortable, because I know it is connected to the phase where my thoughts become more abstract and strange just before falling asleep.
    By the way I find these videos about sleep disruption scary as hell. I am definitely not watching the next one just before going to bed as I have done with this one.
    Good night!

    Can relate a lot to the subconscious radio. Weirdest feeling is when you are already in that zone and slowly you feel that floaty feeling, realising you're just dreaming. Then suddenly that feeling rushes on to that weird falling sensation and you violently twitch back into reality!

    Also, it's interesting you say that you are not on drugs while experiencing these things. I can relate completely to every thing you have said in this video, but not since being a recreational smoker. When I was younger I would lie in bed for perhaps an hour or two before drifting off, my mind constantly thinking about some circumstance or adventure or experience, or as you have said the minds radio station. I am sure I have listened to entire songs in my head that were inspired by whatever genre of music I was into at the time. But they were full songs with verses, breaks and multiple instruments. Made by my subconscious and yet I would still have some sort of conscious influence over what direction the tune would take. However I couldn't focus on it too much or the radio would turn off, just as if a real radio had turned off it would leave a tangible silence. Brains are mental!

    This is perhaps my favorite kind of content. Talking about our mind and the things so close to us yet unexplained as of now. I can imagine a future human civilization having solved this mystery and found ways to use it recreationally, or for medicine, or something I cant comprehend. Its a proper feeling of spiritual whilst not being religious or supernatural. Just spiritual in the poetic sense that nature has given us.

    If you or anyone here has sleep problems i would try melatonin which you can get on ebay from america if you are in the uk. I used to have insomnia so got this and i can now get to sleep in like 5 mins. Its actually amazing. Definitely recommend it. It also keeps you more awake in the day because it gives you more of a hormone which makes it so when it is bright, you are more awake and when it is dark you are more asleep.

    Just today I had a really weird dream, or nightmare...
    Well, I was in a random house with random people, then I suddenly see people with guns breaking the windows and shit to enter, I was the only one that noticed, I tried to tell them what I saw but I couldn't more or talk or scream, after a few seconds that felt like hours trying to move and talk I knew I was a nightmare, like you know you're dreaming then get a lucid dream but with a nightmare, and I coulnd't do what I wanted, it was just a really scary and vivid nightmare, pretty weird right? all I could do is close my eyes (and probably cry in agony) so I wake up, then I woke up in a lucid dream (yay) and a girl sucked me really good :D
    Conclusion: If you close your eyes when you're having a terrible nighmare you will get rewarded with a lucid dream!!!
    Damn that's weird, I've also heard it can happen the other way around, you're happy with a lucid dream then it turns into a really really vivid nightmare

    4:00 I experience this as well, from time to time. For me, it's less music, and more voices. A lot of the time, it sounds more like mumbling, but sometimes, someone will shout out my name, clear as day, or say some unintelligible phrase. It sounds like there's someone in the room with me, but if I get up to check it out, I'll be all alone. Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who experiences this.

    Hey Philip, your part about feeling judged got me to write this. A lot of what you talk about in this and the previous sleep video rings true with experiences and thoughts about sleep as a phenomenon I had myself. In fact, even the part about feeling judged about it when sharing it with a larger audience than just a few close friends or in person.
    I myself have had several experiences with sleep paralysis and the halucinations that often accompany them. Sometimes these hallucinations were just really elaborate nightmares that felt amazingly real, but other times they were experiences I could only describe as being "Religious" even though I myself consider myself completely non religious. I have kinda lost the point of where I wanted to go with this, guess that your sharing of your (somewhat similar) experiences got me to share mine. Just wanted to let you know that I think these videos are really interesting (your other normal videos are awesome too btw), not a lot of content creators would make something like this.
    Keep on klikking!

    This is phenomenal. Honesty like this is extremely underrated nowadays, especially here on YT. No matter how funny it sounds to speak about this things, this is just so interesting to me, subjectively. Even tho I'm sure you won't believe me, but here we go.. I had "lucid dreams" when I was younger, about 11-12yo. I had it only for a short time, about a year or less. Every day I was always happy when I needed to go to sleep, cause I will dream whatever I want. I dreamt about driving cars, motorcycles, wondering alone on the streets, watching a murder or some dodgy business, having a girlfriend even lol.... And biggest of all.. Flying or levitating. Also strangely before all that in about 3rd or 4th grade of primary school I only dreamt about churches and crosses every single dream. Then later on in, very rough approximation, about 4th to 5th grade I only had 1 same dream for a couple of years.. Endless labyrinth, but with a catch. I don't see anything and I'm imaging that I'm zig-zagging in my bed all night. Did I do it IRL? I'm still not sure. But there ya go. Weird story similar to yours, kinda. :)
    Cheers

    I sometimes hear sound when I'm in bed too. It's a different sound every time it happens, but on any particular night, the sound doesn't change. It's not music though, just noises. The two that I can remember are the sounds of someone walking up some stairs, and a friend of mine laughing. He has a very distinct and contagious laugh, so when I heard it on the edge of my mind I knew who it was straight away. The weird thing was, the sound of his laughter coming from inside my head got louder, until one that sounded so loud it snapped me fully awake. I stopped hearing it after that and went to sleep.

    I happen to be on that half awake state every morning when I can sleep late. During it, I always have amazing dreams, always, and I'm completly concious. Concious to the point that when I hear a dar away sound or feel brightness, I am able to identify it as an element outside of my dream, and fight it so it doesn't wake me up. It always win, and I wake up, depressed that I had to leave my amazing dream. But sometime, I fall back asleep quick enough to resume my dream where I left it, everything unchanged, while being concious that I am dreaming again. It's quite difficult to put words on this, especially that my english is poor. But this experience is amazing, I think it helped me when I had a depression, being able to have "a second life". It made me wish it was real, and it forced myself to make changes in my real life to get out of the depression. The subconcious is an incredible part of oneself. And by the way, multiple time I had "fevery" dreams and experienced the "domino game". I was alone, and as I was pushing dominos everything was accelarating, spilaring out of control to the point when all the universe surrounding me just imploded or something, making me wake up in a scream. This dream is just horrible, I wish I had someone with melike in yours

    I totally understand the musicbox and voices thing - when I'm laying half-awake I sometimes hear extremely vivid musical segments or someone calling my name; however, usually they're so vivid that I jolt and wake myself up again and the phenomenon is over.

    I actually experienced the music thing a while after watching this video for the first time. I had been up pretty late just laying in bed on my phone, and as I started to drift off to some music I realized that I wasn't playing any music and I didn't know where it was coming from. I remembered this video and focused on the music more, which prompted it to start getting quieter. I decided to stop thinking about it so it wouldn't go away, causing it to get louder again. I don't remember what the music actually sounded like; it was pleasant, but not the sort I'd usually listen to.

    People talking about fucked up sleep or fever dreams is so comfy for me. Really can't tell why. When you are sick or really tired in bed it sucks but thinking of such scenes is so wholesome.
