  • Back into training with the medium intensity workout. A slight loss of strength but still demolished from the manual labour of getting the gym area sorted, and adjusting to the differences in stability and height settings of the improved setup. No PRs broken today but still a good session.

Thanks for your comment. The last session I did was a Heavy session and that night was really tiring. Going to do a lighter session and hopefully get some active recovery

My motivation is my family. I want to be able to protect them from whatever comes in front of us. It is great motivation for me. I am 47 and training only gets harder from here on. So the harder it gets the harder I have to train. It was so much easier when I was 20.

Motivation is a great subject. Building strength and health is empowering, and I feel builds resilience to a lot of other things. I've certainly taken my share of beatings in life and went to the front line twice for the military in my early 20s. Ive never been the biggest guy but still kept going through selection where many others faltered. Despite everything going on could train and recover easily. I can still train hard now but it's the recovery and injury risk to factor in. But with this new approach its doing the training that works for me that's important.

Thanks it took longer than I thought to do it but it makes for a more better environment to train in. Hopefully with the clocks changing soon and some better weather it will make training outside more lighter and bearable.

Magnificent job on your outdor GYM, I watched your video of building that and your others. Great aesthetics created for the motivation, but what are the personal motivations, the reasons why? A question I ask myself at 48, what am I training for? I look over my Left Fence my Right Fence and no-one is doing the same.

Its only a tip from my training days but picking the bar up from the front position of the seated shoulder press is sapping most of your energy and strength before you start the set. As the weight increases this will become a more obvious issue. Start with the bar set on the rack behind your head so you reach back for it with arms just above bent position. Great video.

Thanks Rob might have to try that. As I have redone the floor for the gym all the pin heights have changed so your right it probably is making an impact. I will transition back to standing presses soon I think as the seated were a workaround for back issues. I used to do press behind neck and that was quite good.

Thanks for your comment, motivation has always been the challenge for me. Ive dipped in and out of fitness. Was first into it when i was in the military as lots of influence there and a real range of facilities from great gyms to a few rusty plates below the decks of a ship. I tried to keep it going when i got out and needed something to aim at so entered a strongman competition. Did this for a few years in a row got really into progressive overload strength training then just let it slide. Life got in the way and lost the motivation mainly due to time and energy being drained due to full time career and studying for Masters. Last year was the turning point as i was concious that i wasnt fit as i could be and i still had my equipment so no excuses. I decided to follow a simple full body workout from the Keys to progress book and adapted it as i went along. At the same time i cleaned up the diet and with this combination got results. Logging the workouts i gradually was increasing weights i previously strained on and felt and looked better for it. My motivation is to do a bit more than i could last time, enjoy working out and try to stay injury free whilst gradually increasing strength and physique. Im realistic that ive always been natural, and dont bother with any supplements and my genetics are far from optimal being 6ft 3 and log limbs but i get a buzz from training at home in the elements. At home also saves time so i think anyone can dedicate a few hour's a week to training.

But to what end, what is nagging at you, what is driving you, why do you feel you have to be strong fit and healthy, what is at the core of the motivation?

@InvictusManeo. It's the drive to test myself gradually against the best I could do before, enjoying being out there even if i dont feel like it sometimes, and giving myself a good chance to maintain my health and vitality as I get older. Of course some people might do that by swimming or running but the gym is what I enjoy.
