  • If we want less piracy, we have to understand why it’s there in the first place. All “pirates” are underserved customers and insisting only on tougher laws won’t get you more sales.

    Most of the music I've downloaded is at least over 10 years old. Most of it is more like 20-30 years old. It's fucked up to think we still need to pay for something that was made 40-50 years ago, let alone 10. Same goes for movies. We need a reasonable limit for copyright holders. Something like 10-15 years before the content becomes public domain. It's disgusting how big business is still trying to milk old franchises for money.
    The other thing I love about pirating is that it wastes no resources, save maybe the electricity needed to power a computer. That Cd, DVD, or book you bought is inevitably going to end up in a landfill. Not true for digital media. It takes up no physical space, no money went in to transferring it, and can be duplicated infinitely with virtually no waste of resources.

      Why should something you've created ever become public domain? What gives me the right to say; "Hey man, you created that awesome story 10 years ago, now I'm going to rip it off, piss over your vision and sell it as my own"? Who other than you should be able to give permision to do that?
      I don't agree with the way copyright is being dealt with today, but just claiming everyone has a right to make money off someone else's ideas doesn't feel right either.

      So you turn off the TV every time an ad uses a public domain song, every time a Disney movie is on, every time Dracula appears on a Show, right? I mean, if public domain is such a shame, if you feel that strongly, I can only assume you don't watch until you're SURE Victor Hugo's descendants are getting payed, huh?

    these people are smart. they should start a non-profit co-operative
    distribution service. it could still pay for access to the products, or
    pay artists for submissions, but it could also unify customer ownership
    and access. some wealthier users could pay more to help purchase access to more content, while other more poor users could pay only small fees for membership/access, or even be allowed free access.

    • @rckoegel
      @rckoegel 9 лет назад +1

      +Rue Koegel then of course, with any extra monies, they can help establish full on non-profit co-operative content creation platforms, to produce the content and ensure proper/fair payment to the actual artists.

    Totally agree. They are basically stupid.
    If I want to buy music but I hate iTunes (dreadful...) and other services for many reasons, I'm in trouble. Not to talk about the utter absence of lossless quality (FLAC, APE or something) “legal” alternatives.
    If I want to buy movies or TV shows, I'm in trouble. There's virtually no “legal” alternative to good, free and DIY BDrips, for example.
    *I want to choose the quality and the parameters I really want.* And *no* DRM!! I want to *own a file forever and do with it what I want,* not just use it when and where the software tells me. And streaming mostly *sucks*.
    For videogames at least there's Steam (with lots of DRM anyway), but many games are *missing*, and others are just *overpriced* and I don't want to pay that (there are offers regularly, but you must wait for them...). So for the majority the best solution is still “pirate” them...
    Even with good legal alternatives, there always will be people who wouldn't pay a cent for the content anyway. But with this ridiculous legal offer, what did they expect?

    Making a meme out of a frame from a TV show is piracy? Isn't that covered under fair use as parody?

    • @Keloot
      @Keloot 9 лет назад +1

      +JJ Warner yes but companies are shit. and will try to steal from you .

    •  9 лет назад +1

      +JJ Warner Not really. The companies still have the right to sue you for doing that and you'll have to prove in court that it's fair use. Fair use is not an automatic thing.

    • @Copy-meOrg
      @Copy-meOrg  9 лет назад +3

      +JJ Warner Alin is right. Furthermore, fair use is only in the US (and UK). But each country in the EU has a different clause on what constitutes a legal exception. And no fair use at all. Audio-visual quotations are not really covered under law.

    Game developers would be better off embrancing or even encouraging sharing their games. Those who did (Sos of McPixel fame, creator of Hotline Miami who once dropped into comments of his game on tpb and was helping with issues and even gave few codes away) got RESOUNDING success (having great game also helped). It's just sound business strategy.

      +Starius2 because sharing games allows the terrorist to also get the game for free, and not spend his money on games or other media, and such have more money for terroristic activity, duh..
      but no in all seriousness, is that even a thing, do some people claim piracy actually funds terrorists, do terrorists supposedly run these sharing sites, and all the traffic on those sites gives terrorists money or something??

    • @yzf
      @yzf 9 лет назад +1

      +mark goos Well, yes. The traffic on those websites gives the owners money if there are advertisements (e.g. what happened to piratebay), but I doubt that terrorists own those sites... :D

    Steam is good at adjusting prices depending where you are. The prices for the same game in the U.S. versus Russia is drastically difference, but when adjusted for the value of the dollar, are very close.

      +Goldyray Yeazle As much as I like Steam, I don't buy games there. I live in Poland, and average new game costs twice as much as buying it here in the store. Even more if you compare the size difference of an American to Polish salary.

      That's too bad. As for myself, I have a hard time finding work. When I was 21 I went to a party where someone had a stupid idea of moving it into an area we weren't supposed to be. Half a year later someone who was at the party got in trouble, pointed a finger at me, I didn't point out anyone else that was there and ended up with a Felony. It wasn't so bad at first, but I'm 34 now and the past 6 or so years it's been hard to find a job without that incident coming up and getting rejected. Anyway, Steam has a lot of random sales and I can only usually afford a few bucks. (The most I've paid for a game) Otherwise, I end up having to pirate things because it's hard to get a job here. (Especially in the small town I got stuck in, I was the manager of the gas station here until they found out I got in trouble all those years ago and demoted me, then reduced my hours to where I wasn't even on the schedule anymore so I quit, seeing as how I was just on call at that point) But, yeah. Steam gives me a way of paying for some of the games I couldn't otherwise afford. But, I don't have a great computer either so I can only really get 2d games, or crude 3d games. Any of the new commercial games are far out of reach for me. I understand that we make more money here than others, but screw up once and it becomes hard as hell to find work. Nobody wants someone who's gotten into trouble, even if it's been 14 years ago now.

      +Wolf Guard Miestwin I understand you.

    • @sk8erbyern
      @sk8erbyern 9 лет назад

      +Wolf Guard Miestwin Steam's pricing policy depends on the publisher. Valve does not set the price. IF the publisher wants Valve to set the price they have great economists who work on the local markets so they set it accordingly. Some overly confident publishers like R*, Ubisoft and 2k think they know better so they set thier regional prices. It is their games which are ridiculously expensive in some regions. GTA V here in Turkey costs 1/4th of the minimum wage. The people here are not that rich either so they can't justify the money given away for entertainment easily. Combine the economic situation of the people with the ridiculous prices and you can see why people pirate those stuff. I myself am studying computer engineering so I will be one of those developers one day. Even I can understand the piracy. This video puts it nicely.

      +sk8erbyern GTAV costs 60 euro. That's 256PLN. Minimum wage in Poland is 1500PLN. Not much better.

    I support your piracy campaign. But these two videos were very bad imo. Things were overexaggerated, extrem cases taken and sold as a norm, or quotes ripped out of context. This is simple propaganda. How's this better than what your proclaimed antagonist does?

    • @beb0126
      @beb0126 9 лет назад +1

      +dangdung1337 How so? I'm not trying to offend. I'm legitimately curious. Do you have any sources on how they're wrong, or are you just speaking from your own knowledge?

    • @dangdung1337
      @dangdung1337 9 лет назад +1

      +beb0126 the 150'000 buck punishment for example. I have no clue where they have that from. Its alot more common to have to pay like 2000-3000 bucks for piracy offenses. And the cases I know are severe ones. The laws for piracy are quite new, so you can do a lot with a lawyer. For the context look at 4:19 and read the paragraph. She connects two sentences that stand in no direct relation. I don't know. These two videos just seemed exaggerated to me.
