    Man i hate that he's gone. The dude was literally one of a kind and a character. His physique and business wasn't the only tools that made him successful in life. It's the way Rich carried himself as a person, his personality was golden.

    I have come to appreciate high rep training with perfect technique, when I tried to improve my genetically weak shoulders. No matter how hard I tried to progress in the 8-12 rep range, I couldn't gain much strength, shoulders weren't growing, I was experiencing pains. It wasn't until I dropped the weight and started working in the 15-30 rep range that my shoulders started responding, getting stronger. I'm pretty sure the mind-muscle connection, that you get when you do the perfect technique with smaller weight, instead of working with all of your body with heavier weight, is the key. My joints stopped aching as well.

      I have gotten these results shoulders, legs and back. The thing is, when I go light weight and high reps to failure, i concentrate on technique and I suspect I grew my nervous system in those muscle groups, because I felt them better and my strength increased as a result. It could have diminishing results though. My personal experience - I used to squat 150lbs for 5-6 reps, and I wasnt progressing, because there was a lot of good-mournings in my squat, but my ego couldnt let me drop the weight down. I then started working out with a personal trainer for about 2 months, we dropped the weight on squats to an empty bar, and I was doing 15-20 without pauses at the top, with perfect technique. My quads hurt like never before, but in about 1,5 months I was doing 90lbs for 20 reps, and cold do 150 for 7-8 reps perfect technique, no good mournings. I was also doing gakk-squats (we were alternating weeks between gakk squats and regular squats) for 20 reps empty at the beginning, by the end of 2 months I was doing 110lbs for 20 in the gakk machine. I used to hate that exercise, but when I dropped the ego, and the weight, I actually fell in love with it, and I fell in love with the feeling of my legs exerting and working, whereas previously I used to fear and hate that feeling - mainly because it was an indicator of failure coming in the next rep or two, but now I know the limits of my legs, and I actually enjoy it.

      alot of times it can in experienced lifters also just be a result fo that change, forcing the muscle to adapt to higher reps that result in new growth. Ie you could be doing high reps with light weights then switch to lower reps with higher weight and see that same new growth. I think both are needed but more a case of listening to your body and knowing when to change things up (as you did) Ultimately though higher reps with lighter weights will put less stress on your bones and joints as well as allow for a better mind to muscle connection so should never be neglected.

    That "conserving strenght" technique is actually the best metod for natural lifters.You always want to conserve energy on your most important set. and then give it all you got.

    First time i signed in gym was 5 years ago. Peope told me everywhere in real or on the net : "you have to lift heavy, you got to eat a lot, don't do cardio, don't train too much, you gonna overtrain" That shit got me nowhere except making me fat. Since i incorporated high reps in my workouts and shoking my muscles with everything i could do (dropsets,supersets, negatives,triset,etc), even training some of my muscles twice a week for a couple of month, i started to get some serious incredible gains. The only thing i take are supplements. Usually people who tell you how to train, are those who look like they don' train. This is Ironic. A guy last time was telling me to go lighter but that was not what i was looking for. This is the typical ignorance. People want to tell you how to do something, and they don't even know what you're looking for. To make this short : Training, Nutrition and Consistensy are the 3 bases for results. Be sure these 3 bases are updated frequently. Read, watch bodybuilders interviews and experience, you can learn everyday something on your body. Rich Piana is right, train for The PUMP if you wanna build muscle the fastest way. And in my experience, you don't even need to use steroids. Just be sure to give your body everything it needs ( food, sleep, recovery). Ok final thing, BE CONSISTENT. Good Luck guys, i hope you gonna get good gainnzzzzzzz.

      Late to the party but good read. I totally agree! I made some serious gains in the 10 months I've been going and I love it. I just do short term intensity, make my workouts count, eat correct and slight surplus, and sleep like a brick. gained 10-12lbs (fluctuating with water) in that time and still have my abs. Love it!

    Honestly he makes a good point. High reps is crucial to muscle growth. Now I still have both heavy low rep days and my high rep days but once I started doing high reps my muscles started to grow more. Ego lifting doesn't get you far. Your body will adjust to it and it's pointless after a while. RIP big rich!

      there is studys measuring hypertrophy, its about volume x load, you can move 240 for 5x5 or 200 for 3x10 and it builds the exact same hypertrophy, this is real data. because 240 5x5 or 200 3x10 is 6000 lbs total volume moved, it comes down to volume, sure do 20 reps if you like the lactic acid build up which contributes almost fuck all to growth, but 20 the reason it does build muscle is because you get volume in easy, but someone can do reps of 3 and if they do enough they are building the exact same amount

      Tony Soprano When you post research you ought to provide the sponsors because its usually their interests which are being promoted, especially in the fitness industry. And most of those studies don't come from guys who use it and have gotten significant results, obviously. You think
      Again, you guys just don't get it, which is why your results are as they are. The objective is not to move a massive amount of weights if the targeted muscle is not engaged properly. You have to be seriously deranged to miss this point. There's a fucking reason why your chest will swell the fuck and fell like its going to explode (gear or no gear) because the chest muscles are doing essentially all the work. They are constantly engaged. Compare that to just getting the weight up from point A to B. What muscle groups are you working? All you do is feel exhausted afterwards.
      Also, more importantly, why would you train differently on gear then natty? This makes absolutely no sense. Does gear change to function of the muscles? Do the muscles now act differently than they do on a natty guy? Your muscle functions are always the same, in every person. They are engaged in the same manner whether on something or not. Are you fucking kidding me? All steroids do is put you on turbo mode. That's the advantage. Post studies from guys who work out 30 min 3x a week claiming optimal results. The proof is in the pudding buddy, grow out of this nonsense.

    This is how I train, try and tell my friend the same but he never listens. He'll load on weight he's barely able for, pump out a couple of bad form cheat reps and call it a day because he's blown his strength. I'll tell him to lower the weight to a manageable weight but he wont listen. I'd rather get 10-15 reps on a slightly lower weight then 1-5 on a heavier one, I get less pump, less stretch and way less muscle activity. Sure heavy weight is nice sometimes, but I just don't get the same burn. I'm not on steroids (obviously) but this scenario works for me to.

      Your friend is probably doing strenth training... or atleast focusing more towards strength ...
      Control ,time under tension and progessive overload (improving in reps , wieght..ect over time) is what matters when it comes to lifting wieght and wanting to build muscle just keep doing what your doing ...
      Besides more mass = more force once can drive outta it

      Lucas Gross Nah my friends been going to the gym now for, 3-4 weeks and thinks after 10 years of doing nothing and eating badly that he can catch up with me and my other mates who've been there now between a year and 2 years. So hes trying to power through weights, his form is horrible, has no control, and barely understands the exercises he's doing. He's trying though and thats 10 times more then most of the people in there. We told him to take it slow, do his reps rather then worry about weight right now and get his form sorted, he twists his back doing curls especially badly, but thinks weight = gains, ignoring that fact that he could injure himself badly if he doesnt take it easy. He also takes like 10 seconds between sets no matter how often we tell him to take 30-60 seconds. He's just trying to brute force it and he'll end up hurting himself.

    I never go by weight numbers, I just lift what I can lift on that muscle group from 8-10. If someone asks how much I bench my reply is 'I have no idea'

    I believe most bodybuilders went through a stage of trying to get as strong as possible, you still needs big numbers to get massive.

      No you dont need big numbers to grow, your body isn't gonna grow because you can lift 400-500 pounds... It only gets easier because more muscle = more strenght !! You're not gonna get better hypertrophy because you can lift more for the same amount of reps, compared to what you used to do in the past... Only the quality matters to grow

      delcshimo What I mean is that it is not because you can bench 500 pounds that you will get better hypertrophy than a guy benching 225 for the same amour of reps you did with 500. Of course you get stronger every time you lift weights, but the amount of weight you lift is no indication of muscle hypertrophy, it is only about the right amount of reps and the right way to perform each and every rep... And honestly you don't need heavy weights to build muscle when you're on Steroids, go for the pump (higher reps) and you'll get much better result for hypertrophy... Believe what you want, but the amount of weight is no indication of muscle hypertrophy...

      correction bodybuilder on steroids because a natural bodybuilder definitely needs to focus on weight reps and sets along with the quality and intensity of the workout. a bodybuilder on gear and just up the dose and beat off in the gym and still gain muscle

    He makes a point at the end that is absolutely true. I don't give a shit if you can lift a thousand pounds - If a guy that can lift two hundred can beat your ass silly, then who is the real man? Muscles don't mean shit without the agility, or ability to use them in the real world. Great, you're the strongest guy in the gym, but that don't make you jack shit when you walk out that door. better to focus on the body instead of the weights!

      Because the video alluded to this fact with the "Let's take it to the parking lot" comment. Listen to what the man was saying. the weight you lift has no bearing on what kind of man you are - Get it!

      TheDenseDonkey I would beg to differ, define "kind of man" it's not to say that the guy in the gym squatting 225 for 10 reps (but his max is 365) isn't working as hard as the other guy doing 600 for 3 ( his max being 700+)...but now let's say both had the same body weight...I been in the game 20 yrs and would put all my money on the squatter doing 700...you can think what you want but i know the guy squatting 700 lbs IS a different "kind of man" ... you really can't focus on the body without the weights. Rich says do a squat and wait 30 sec...LOL,.,.,.30 seconds is a realllly loooooong time to be standing there with 800 lbs on your back...besides who does that!
      I think this vid is kind of pointless because anyone who is avid/serious lifter does alternating heavy and light work...so it is acceptable to hit those big weights for few reps to increase strength...and strength is never a weakness.(yes..Mark Bell says that)

      Caesr N Do a chest workout, with the goal of getting to 500 reps. Using decent weights and tell me how you feel the next day and during your workout. I guarantee if you actually try it you will have an amazing pump and be stiff as fuck the next day

      The ppl you are arguing with are novices ... they probably have not trained for over a year and are repeating the shit they heard somewhere, you can not be an advanced bodybuilder and say that heavier weights as a natural on the long term will not fuck your joints up ... simple as that.
      Let them have their own experience, let them wreck themselves, and then they'll learn, it seems like it's the path they've chosen.
      On the other hand, when you are natural, you can not go for 500 reps lol, you will never recover, that's waaay over training and useless, I do not agree with that.

    Great vid, though its funny how you said it doesn't matter how strong someone is in the real world. Also it doesn't really matter in the real world if you're a bodybuilder too because in a fight they'd get beaten up from any amateur which partakes in contact sports. Being a bodybuilder and strength athlete are both great disciplines there is no need to diminish the other by bringing an irrelevant point.

    I recently switched over to powerlifting style training and hitting new maxes is even more satisfying than any pump. But to each his own if you really just care about size and not strength then rich is right go for the pump

    I only do higher reps on auxiliary lifts, even then I go heavy. Higher reps is good for warming up, rehabbing and injury, or guys on gear. Otherwise you need a progressive increase in weight. Also heavy is relative to the exercise you are performing.

      Yah and he just pretended like after you work up to your max then your done and you can rep the fuck out as you take off weight... his logic was severely flawed and based on using gear. I did high reps like he suggested for over a year and made very little progress. When I started going heavy all the time in compounds and then just repping out isolation after, I made way more progress and got strong as fuck compared to where I was at..... his logic about being strong not mattering in a fight was bs as well. I guess because he is big he thinks he can fight lol.. much respect for what the guy achieved but saying this is the only path is bull shittoo!

    I think what you are saying is it's *_Work_* and not just _force_
    Work is Force over a Distance.
    Eg 20 reps of 200 ibs is a freak'in 4000 rep lbs!
    While 4 reps of even 500 lbs is mere 2000 rep lbs.

      I do that all the time, beggins my training with High weigth and low reps, then follow with a superseries with low weigth and high reps, or i do the low weigth high reps series in the ends of the heavy workouts series.
