I doubt I’ll ever be more blown away by a game than I was when I played Mario 64 for the first time. I was 15 when it came out and the move from a 2d to a 3d world was just insane. I can’t imagine gaming taking a leap that big now. Maybe if a truly immersive and spectacular VR game comes out soon that could possibly compare.
I'm with you, I was 12 and I swear I've never seen a bigger more significant graphical leap forward than from 2d side scrolling to 3d open adventure in that era 💯
I was also 15. I remember that I bought the game although not having the money for the console yet. And then suddenly a pricedrop was announced! Winderful times. Also loved Waverace and Goldeneye.
That feeling of slowly learning to use the control stick to move Mario around in 3D was so magical. Then you'd explore every nook and cranny. Not because you expected a reward for it. Because you COULD. These are things kids these days who grow up with 3D games on their phones will never experience.
It did feel pretty amazing to go from snes to n64. But imo the most amazing leap in tech was classic doom. My entire life ive always imagined a world where we never advanced beyond the doom engine. Imagine skyrim with that engine but the game still plays the same way it does now. Thatd be so cool! Daggerfall would look so basic.
I gotty say yes but that is in great part nostalgia speaking because even though i dont care ebout graphics mario oddyssey has brought me so much more fun than 64 and i didnt fully finish 64 but the controls in odyssey are far better and i really live how fast its going but if its about which one is better for the time it came out in id probably say mario 64 because it pioneered in the category and its still very fun today
@@harmondraws yes i played it through out of respect for what it means in gaming history and with all due respect by todays standards its ass. It was still fun especially with the goofy graohics and controls but i wouldnt pay full price money for a game lile that. It feels more like a 5-10 dollar bootleg
Seeing how relatively small this 21 year difference is compared to the 6 year difference between SM64 and SMW puts things into perspective how absolutely insanely groundbreaking SM64 felt to play back then.
I spent hours just doing back flips, long jumps, and doing the handstand dismounts from trees. It was another world. I couldn’t think about anything except sinking hours into SM64 and Shadows of the Empire getting it that first Christmas after it had dropped that previous fall.
It’s basically a sequel. I personally think Odyssey is one of the best games ever made. It’s not just some fun little Mario game. It’s insanely creative and fun and unique
I heard somewhere that bobomb battlefield was supposed to have a river but was scraped, pretty cool to see it in cascade kingdom now seeing how similar they are lol
This just saved me so much money. I didn’t care for the game on 64. It’s too difficult and not user friendly controlling Mario. He goes all over the place when I want to walk a straight line. It looked familiar in the trailer I watched and couldn’t put my finger on it. Thank you so much.
What if cascade kingdom was that level just in like 30 years later like there’s a chain chomp right there. And then there’s a bridge and then at the top there’s a big place to fight a boss
Bowser's Fury was their last 3D Collectathon and i heard it was great and more rewarding than odyssey's moons. Some rumours we're spread that the next one will be open world like Fury so i think it's going to be great
@@user-fk2xg8nq6r Oh, i don't really know much about the classic Zelda games. But what i imagine for Mario is a Rich world kinda like the Paper Mario ones, but free movement like odyssey. I really hope the next 3D Mario game returns the ability to punch and kick freely, like in Mario 64. One of my frustrations about the more modern 3D Mario games is that you have to rely on the game's gimmick ability like cappy in Oddysey, FLOOD in Sunshine, and the cat/racoon powerup in 3D World/Land.
Mario 64 was a great game to play till maybe 2002. After the sunshine release, this game didnt age well, the camera is not that good, and the movements are robotic.

That's actually the native (non-emulator) Nintendo 64 resolution. It blended well with CRT / tube TV's, yet looks less than ideal on newer monitors. Emulators such as Project 64 did a phenomenal job at upscaling resolutions for N64 games for over 20 years
Mario 64 has better music even tho lost kingdom 8-bit is the only thing in odesseyy that beats it im 100% the game and play it in my music collections in tge game
I bought Switch since I really and I mean REALLY hope to play Super Mario 64 again. But then when I played Odyssey, its kinda refreshing to get frustrated and figure out a game all over again. The feeling I felt when I first played 64. and now I just beat bowser and was glad that I can play more and unlock more stuff.

The one I played he jumped through paintings and said “yahoo!” When he jumped up in the air while shooting his fist in the air

The graphics may be glitchy… but Super Mario 64 was one of a kind. Amazing game and still a classic I play
