Proud South Dakotan here! Black Hills is top of the line!
Me too.
Fuck yea South Dakota
Shit costs too much.
Chris, you've been educating us all for years in a way that no other resources has. Much appreciated, thank you.
Seriously. The knowledge and experience is impressive and very much appreciated.
Agreed. I've ended plenty of debates citing what Mr. Bartocci says.
“They had a little issue with blowing up” That would certainly put a rock in the gears of production
The 77 MK262 Mod1-c is my favorite ammo.
My 1-7’s love it!
This is my favorite round in 5.56mm. Black Hills makes some of the very best ammo.
Good rifle + good ammo + good shooter = effective hits. Thanks for ANOTHER great video!
Had box of these. Biggest regret was shooting it because it made all the range and gucci brands I normally shoot trash in comparison...
Great video! only thing I would say is during my deployments ranging from 2007 to 2014, it was widely available in theater for non SOF units as well. I learned way more in this video than I did actually carrying it. I will definitely be subscribing for more!
Nearly a half hour video on a bullet.....this is a good day.
Thanks for making a cartridge so interesting! Would you consider doing a video on the M855A1? That cartridge seems to have a somewhat twisty history.
I have a mk12 mod 1 and a couple cases of mk262 and man is it fun to shoot. One of the best gun purchases i've ever made.561 MOA from commercially loaded brass, holy moly.
Stop reminding everyone Chris! These ammo shortages are bad enough getting my monthly orders 😆
I was glad to find some white boxes of the Mod 0 at a gun show in 2006 when there was probably peak demand. Never found any flaws in it.
I have used Mk 262 for years because of a friend of mine but never knew the back story. Great video!
Please do more ammo videos, especially 5.56.
I know your more into military stuff but could you review the Speer Gold Dot .223 in 62gr and 75gr? They are very popular in law enforcement.
My agency issues 55 grain gold dot.
Been using this round for 20 yrs down range for SOOCM. Great round, Thanks Black HIlls
Excellent review, Chris, and much appreciated. Fortunately, I purchased six boxes of this before the recent shortage. No doubt, worth the money. Great channel, sir.
A video on the m855a1 would be interesting
I have always loved black hills.
I have duplicated the MK 262 and love it. I first used it in the ARMY when I was on the SF side of the house. I use it as a hunting round and home/self defense round. I've even used it to take elk out west with in 200 yds. The best 5.56 round by far.
What powder did you find to duplicate it?
@@jackbauer4186 Possibly aa2520. I forget off the top of my head but I believe that's what Johnny from Johnny's reloading bench used in his clone mk262 recipe.
Ordered 480 rounds when this video first aired. Still waiting for it to show six months later.
When it comes in send it to my house for accuracy testing.
Very informative review. I don't often shoot with this ammo at the range but keep it on hand for worst case scenarios.
Jam Packed with info !!! The Best organized and articulated presentation I have seen in the firearms field.
Good work !!!
Chris Bartocci. The Mk 262 Mod1 is my go to round for self defense and of course distance shooting. It works just fine in my Sig 516 Patrol rifle upper. My fall back round thus far has been the Hornady 5.56 75 gr Superformance which seems to be a decent round. For the 16" 1/7 twist barrel found in the Patrol Rifle upper. The lower is a Stag Model 8 with a Giesele SSA trigger and Vltor Imod buttstock.
I need to get that 460 round can of MK262.
So do I, But it's over $500. . . 😔
BlueFox284 I know man.... I could almost get a new Glock or M&P 2.0 with apex trigger for that kind of money 😒
@jon smith LOL no way I am paying that price. You can get a nice optic for that.
Great video! Thank you. I live near Rapid City, SD and picked up 6 boxes of the Black Hills Mk 262 Mod 1 at a LGS for $1.14 a round. I'm going to buy more next week. It's easy to get here.
The worst thing about mk 262 is that its virtually impossible to find today
No joke
Magtech makes an awesome clone
@@carlosnavarrojr.6912 not anymore. They haven’t made it for over a year. Magtech and Sierra couldn’t agree on pricing/price increase. Magtech is supposedly looking into making their own bullet, but don’t plan on seeing it in stock any time soon. :(
If you have a 60-77 grain sandcasting mold it can be done
SGAMMO Sellier and Bellot has it.
I remember hearing this round brought up all the time on P&S podcasts but was never quite sure what exactly made it so special, makes sense now.
Now is a perfect time for me to reload my custom mk262. LC brass, Tac powder, with WSR primers, and 77 smk/tmk
Will be stocking up on this.
Great video Chris!!! Very informative as well. I was wondering when you would finally get around to doing a video on the MK 262 MOD 1. Thank you!!!
The photos of ballistic gel were impressive, I wasn't expecting such damage. I'll pass on seeing a real wound.
Seen some photos of deer hit with these - really really nasty
Thanks for the great video!
I just called my LGS to see if he can find 2 cans. He got me a case of BH 77gr TMK when it was OOS everywhere.
Thanks for the tip on the cans of MK212 Mod 1-c
One of the most knowledgeable guys in the industry if not The most knowledgeable. And yes I do fully understand how big of a statement that is but its true. Thanks Chris for sharing all you do on the tube! 🎯🔫👍🏻
Thank you !
I wish I was so wealthy that this would be all I I’d shoot !!! Love that ammo!! Great job sas!!
Paladin Stacker I know!!! Bought some a while ago and my budget PSA was shooting MOA out to 700 yards..... midway is out of stock until further notice 😭😭
Covid panicdemic sucks the lifestyle out of us gun enthusiasts 😡
There have been numerous attempts to clone this round. Some got close in terms of velocity and dispersion - but nobody has been able to exactly duplicate the powder load using commercially available reloading powders
Is the IMI 77gr a clone of this round?
Ricochet IMI is made to the exact specs. Even using the black hills bullets.
Ricochet - the IMI wont group as tight as the Black Hills. IMI cannot precisely duplicate the Black Hills powder formula (nobody can). Anybody can buy the Sierra 77gr OTM bullet with cannelure - I’ve got a box of 500 on my reloading bench right now.
Peter Southern Boy never had a problem doing sub-moa groupings
9Hole did a grouping comparison with MK262 and the IMI through a MK12, evidently it depends on the day which is better.
It's nice to see this round also works relatively well in 10.5" barrels.
I was using the 64gr Gold Dot in .223 in my 10.5".
Perhaps, I will try to switch to this Black Hills ammo.
64gr gold dots are exceptional in sbr’s
The gold dot and federal fusion use the same projectile, and they expand at low velocities. Very good for SBR's. Definitely shtf ammo.
I built a dmr clone with a 20" 1:8 416r stainless barrel that is terribly accurate with this round. Love it.
77gr TMK and 50gr TSX next please!
Great video Chris! Thanks for it. Any chance on an M855a1 deep dive like this?
Of all your videos the GWOT related videos are my foavorite!
Dude I adore your channel man! It’s bad, I’m obsessed! I’ve been following a ton of firearms channels since I first really got serious about rifles in 2011. It wasn’t until recently the last year that I stumbled upon this channel and sure enough I started rebuilding my first AR pistol into a rifle due to the new NFA crap. So I started using your advice and just influence of perspective to help my approach. Ended up with a DD Sopmod block 2, with dead air KeyMo flash, voltor A5 with H2 buffer, geissele trigger, radian ambi safety and charging handle, all on an Aero M4E1 lower and I’m obsessed! It runs great and it’s become my fav over my old 11.5” build. When can we see a video on the block 2? I figured you would have made one already but I can’t find one at all.
There is one on the MK18
The pistol brace issue is resolved. Go play with your shortie.
Great video, SmallArmsSolution, on this subject of quality ammo. I own the stuff, and rarely shoot it. Saving the ammo for my Centurion Arms Mk 12 rifle, when it arrives.
And here we are over 20 years later and reloaders still can't duplicate it...
I try with what I have. At least he gave the FPS! I can work with that!
FloridaSpook there is a lot more to this than making muzzle velocity. Burn rates, port pressures, compatibility in different gas systems and barrel lengths, temperature stability, flash retardation and much more.
So happy u did this vid..I was lucky enough to snatch up some from targetsports a couple months ago...now it’s just figuring out which one of my rifles deserve it
Seems the 20" barrel is best as this round will remain effective at longer ranges, though I was surprised to find how well this round performed in shorter barrels at close range. I like ARs with a 20" barrel as they provide the best ballistics and reliability and provide the longest sight radius with irons - ideally with a stress relieved pencil barrel.
20” recce/daytime rifle and a 14.5” nighttime/recce carbine is they way to go in my opinion.
@Nathan-zw7nq I run a 18" Mk12 and a 14.5", they are my two main squeezes.
Excellent vid on the MK-262,k thanks Chris & Heather
I get sub-MOA accuracy with 75gr Hornady BTHP and Nosler CC 77gr, using Viht N140. Colt M4 16” 1in7.
I shoot the commercial version and it's fantastic. Sub MOA accuracy out of my rack grade AR barrels.
Yeah - just got my hands on some of this here in Switzerland - for my DD Mk 12 SPR upper...
I was introduced to this round about 12 years ago, and its impressive. More recently, I have utilized it ethically and quickly harvest whitetail deer and feral hogs. It compares favorably to soft point ammunition. However, the wound channel a Speer Gold Dot 64 grain soft point bullet remains superior.
I agree. I bought a few thousand 64gr. And 75gr. Speer Gold dot bullets for reloading and they are my favorite hands down
Try the Black Hills Brown Tip 70gr SOCOM “Optimized”. It’s copper and penetrates up to 22” with a 5” wound channel.
www.eagleeyeguns.com/product-p/d556n3.htm
I wish I could find me some SGD bullets.....all sold out in my area.
Surprised to see so much 64 gr gold dot love I l got it without knowing how good it was. I ordered 200 rounds and cycled some through my lwrc spr to test function its super nice stuff .
Same. Loves me some mk262
Once again, you’ve hit a homerun! Great video.
Amazing video. Would love to see one on the mk318 mod 1 too. Or the m855a1
Your videos are always so dense with info i have to rewatch them. 👍
Chris Bartocci. Hello and Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones. I have come to rely upon your exhaustive research and thoughtful analysis. You had a big influence on my purchasing the Black Hills Mk 262 Mod1 ammo. I have a Sig Sauer 516 Patrol rifle upper mounted on a Stag Arms Model 8 lower. 1/7 twist 16" barrel. The rifle likes this ammo a decent second runner is the Hornady 75gr superformance. Decent yes BUT not as good. All the best to you and yours Chris. Take care, be safe. Thank you.
Speer Gold Dot bonded round does great on barrier & bone, I like the 75 Gr, but I do Run the MK262 77 Gr OTM, but situation will dictate for use
the MK262 is anti personnel. Not met to cut down mud huts. As you point out, there is better ammo for that. The MK262 will have better terminal performance over the GDHP. That one is more apt to penetrate and exit compared the MK262. But as you point out, it may well depend on the need. SOCOM used that round almost exclusively in MK12, MK18 as well as M4A1.
I love the .223, seriously one of the finest chamberings ever invented. With that said I have expiriment reloading various "heavy" for caliber bullets in the chambering. I have learned one thing, NOTHING beats the ballistics, accuracy and consistency of the 77 grain Sierra OTM. I tried everything available on the commercial market in the .224 caliber. Noslers, Berger's, hornadys, various mk262 clones, even lapua. It is always more accurate, forgiving in tolerances, consistent in one bullet to the next. I am willing to bet that if you take the 77 grain bullet out of the cartridge of a mk262 mod1 and put anything else on it and it is just another 556 heavy loading. Plain and simple it is the 77 grain sierra match king that has truly brough the 5.56 into the modern era and is the epitome of capability of the cartridge.
Do you have try sierra blitzking 70gr ? just order a box of it but wonder how it will perform compare to 77gr..
The science of killing. Make damn sure that it's a righteous kill. Keep well discernable, the difference between murder and killing. As you were. Thanks Chris.
I had heard that the 77 grain Black Hills ammo was good now I know it’s even better than that.
Man, that was a great video. I don’t comment on videos a lot, but thank you! You should do a detailed video on the new AAC 77g Otm via palmetto state.
What a great channel! Best technical info on RUclips.
Excellent presentation, thank you
77 smk's / varget most accurate combo I've found.
How much varget?
On the slower side but extremely accurate imo.
Great content. I always zero with Mk262.
You are a wealth of knowledge
@SmallArmsSolutions, did you ever pin down dates for when Mk262 started hitting ODAs and teams? From what I dug into after your sections in BR2 on the SPR and 262, it sure seems like the initial Afghanistan invasion and immediately thereafter into 2002 they were still using M855, especially seeing how all the contract optics had the M855 turrets almost all the way through the program (except the Marines' later usage). Somewhere into Iraq from what I've heard from some first and second hand accounts is where 262 started to trickle in, one gent you are probably familiar with photographed two SPRs in 2004 as an ODA came through, and the users stated they had some new ammo but that it was secret squirrel and couldn't say anything about it, and the other being Mr Gurwitch who I think mentioned as well not seeing Mk262 until later on, and he carried an SPR himself.
Another weird thing we found out, is that some of the issued Vari-X III LR scopes actually still had 55gr turrets on them. One that I acquired has the 62gr turrets that one of the solicitations in 2000 called for, but a friend's that for sure came off an SPR (2000 date code, came in ARMS 22s with TRR/TRC, and paint to match and from the source mine came from) and has a much older but still year 2000 date code.
Last thing, when I called Jeff about Mk262 myself and about his personal SPR & Mk12 rifles, I asked how BH found out guys were stealing Mk262 for their CQBRs and M4s. He told me that they saw jumps in the amount of ammo being requested that were way out of line with the expected number of SPRs they knew were in circulation at the time which SOCOM had provided. Me mentioned to me that when they started asking around it quickly turned up that many assaulters were beg/borrow/stealing it off the guys with SPRs and doing whatever they could to get more.
77 SMK is my go to!
I had to subscribe because of the great information you provided. Thank you.
Excellent explanation and background history of this round! Loved it. Keep at it. Do EPR at some point, if you haven't already. DM me, I may have some interesting info on that😏
Re: inspection - For just a split second there, when you said, "Every single round is...", I couldn't help but think how funny it would be if you were to say, "Every single round is test fired on a range behind the factory." (I know, I know... Attention Deficit Disorder is a terrible affliction at times.)
14.5 barrel 2632fps
16 barrel 2695fps
18 barrel 2673fps
20 barrel 2808fps
Those are really interesting results, especially for a round designed for an 18inch barrel
Any MV data out of a 10.3 and/or 11.5?
@@fog8969Just knock off a couple hundred fps and that's about what it'll be. 5.56 velocity drops significantly at those lengths.
Black Hills Ammunition=
The next best thing to hand loading.
By far the most informative pewtuber 🙌
Great video Chris. God bless our troops!
Last box of 262 I bought used Winchester brass.
This ammo is awesome, wish they still made the "blue box" stuff!
I need to get a box of the real deal Black Hills Mk 262 in my 18” Daniel Defense DDM5V7 Pro. I have been really happy with Sig’s Elite Performance 5.56 77 grain. It shoots consistent 1/2 MOA or less 3 shot groups, and it has chronographed twice at 2843 and 2849 FPS for me. I was so surprised at the high velocity I thought my magnetospeed was off, but the labradar I just got was within 6 FPS. I even pulled the bullet to weigh it and confirm it was 77 grains when I saw a velocity so far above the rating and what I’ve seen posted about the Mk 262. I ordered 10 more boxes of the Sig 5.56 77 grain to see if the newer lots don’t have such high velocity. None of the rounds have had the primers fall out but the primers are pretty flat. Without a chronograph though I never would have questioned the primers on the cases.
I’m never in traffic I’m listening to this Guy while moving in a Toyota
Doing that right now in a RAV4
Nice to see other guys like this kind of "talk radio" also lol
Still can't believe the NZ military is using it, they really know their shit.
It's easy to do when you are only equipping a few thousand soldiers.
Too bad NZ civilians lost all their full auto and other cool guns );
@GMF why do you want them to lose more?
@GMF inshallah is used for when you want something to happen.
@GMF its not used like that dude you only say inshallah after something you want to happen you're literally using it wrong I think I would know im arab I'm muslim.........
I reload, best copy was 25.2 grains of AA2520. Shoot under haft inch. Velocity 18inch barrel 2750 to 2760.
When I spoke at length with one of the guys that was on the design team for 262 at BH, he informed me that there was a time period when they had to use Nosler 77gr Custom Competition w/cann because Sierra refused to do it. It wasn't until BH went with Nosler that Sierra finally caved and said okay and put a cannelure on the SMK.
I was looking for this to add/ask as well.
It’s just so damn beautiful
Love Blackhills mk262
I have also found the Magtech 5.56 77gr OTM sniper ammo is just as accurate as the Blackhills ammo I still have a few hundred rounds of it left.
Those used to sell for 60cpr. Amazing.
Another excellent video, as always. Only one problem. You were snapping the ammo can shut when you said the velocity, and I missed it. How fast is this stuff, and out of which barrel? Thanks
Mk262 generally runs around 2750 fps
Shoot this ammo in a match grade rifle and the best results at 600 meters can be expected This is my appraisal having assisted the USAMU deliver the SDM Course where students used the CMP-USAMU SDMR built by Armilite.
Why was I still using m855 when attached to a SEAL team in 2012? I feel like those dudes should have known this since we had a problem with being out ranged in firefights
That ammo was in use by 2004. Surprises me you did not have it. Especially if you were issued MK12
@@SmallArmsSolutions I wasn’t doubting your expertise at all. I remember seeing M855a1 mixed in with m855 and nobody knew what it was at the time. I think it was the crazy optempo and the fact that I was working with a baby SEAL(team 2) platoon at the time. Thanks for responding so quickly.
Never said you did doubt. I was surprised that a SEAL unit issued MK12 rifles would have anything but MK262, the MK12 will not perform at range with the M855 round. I was in Afghanistan in 2012 at Bagram, Camp Vance SOF camp. I never saw any M855A1 there. Mostly MK262 with the SOF guys. Regular Army, those guys had M855A1. That was the first time I came across the A1 round. SOF has not wanted the A1 round. They have plenty of other options and very justly so.
Can you do a similar video for mk318? Love the content.
Is the mod 1-c available yet? 262 is all I load my defensive rifles with, my & my kids lives are well worth $1.15/round! Super informative video Chris, you have 3 of my favorite AR platforms on the table today as well.
$1.15 a round??? Oh goodness thats crazy I love 7.62x39 it's less than $0.30 a round you can get 1k for less than $300...
@@boogalooslav6943 You're comparing Russian steel cased shit to match ammo...
Boogaloo Slav69 - that Russian steel cased garbage wears out barrels and fouls gas blocks, gas tubes, and receivers. It is corrosive and filthy burning.
@@petersouthernboy6327 filthy yes? corrosive? No. Besides 8m3 is effective if not super accurate. Also 7.62 doesnt have the wear issues with steel that 5.56 does.
what about the USMC SOST ammo?
I learn so much watching your videos!
Your knowledge is simply amazing, thanks for sharing it.
Again, a very informative program.
Fantastic video my friend! Thank you for sharing.
Excellent and definitive video on this ammunition type. Would you consider doing a similar video on the development on the M855A1?
If I can ever get my hands on enough M855A1 to test, I certainly would
@@SmallArmsSolutions If I had access to some I'd send it to you. In the Reserves all we get to train with is the standard green tip M855.
Scott Scammahorn I have only had a handful of rounds. Not enough to test accuracy and so on the my satisfaction. I have done gel testing when it first came out. I have been told that the newer ammo has lower port and chamber pressures but I can not verify until I get my hands on new production ammo.
loves me some BHA! Carry the Honey Badger, myself!!
I believe this is the ammo Travis Haley was using on the rooftop in Najaf out of his 20 in bushmaster.. lotta bad guys took pavement temperature challenge that day.. 🇺🇸

Not American but history on specific calibers especially in the modern age is hard to come by so thanks for this.
