Such a good movie. When everybody was talking about black movies not being nominated for Oscars, everybody brought up Straight Outta Compton, but nobody mentioned Dope, and this movie was way better and more creative.
Beyond True, I grew up in the suburbs, sounds great right? I lived in PG count MD until my 5th grade year. Most my life from about 6th grade to 12th i was 1 of maybe 2 black kids in every class, my graduating class i was 1 of 450 black to graduate out of over 4000 whites. I love white & black people but I have been labeled my whole life, You dont act Black enuff....You cant listen to rock or play guitar arent u black ....black people dont skateboard list goes on & on. But now that im 25 all those lessons have showed me to see things from both sides of the coin & now I can pretty much talk to anyone in any situation which has done wonders for my business I know what both white & black want/need. Like my homie says when you grow up in a different situaton you ar eofrced to look at life differently. End of the day I wouldn't change nothing, I have learned & now i can use it to my advantage for the rest of my life, being different is awesome
I definitely agree with the story you just shared..mad respect to be honest. I use to see the negative view about "not fitting in" but as I got older it made more sense. I hate that "you're supposed to act a certain nationality/race". Like what difference will it make me as a person? It's so sad.
I agree that this scene is really powerful. For me it worked as an inspiration that it isn't bad at all, if You don't fit in the social frame, cause it gives You possibility to be whatever You want to be and damn gain so much life experience! Why I like this ? If I wouldn't be Latvian You would even ask me this question
Can someone please explain the significance of that last question to me. I still remember applying to various universities and having to answer similar questions in the format of an essay on quite a few applications. I understand the bit about how he feels like an outsider and how that has helped him form a more unique perspective on his environment and society. But universities pose those kinds of questions to everyone regardless of race. Did I miss something?
Drake Brunette its just the expectations. He never fit into any of those categories no matter his skin color. Hes just saying his teachers should never have questioned his school choice...as Ivy League schools are primarily white

That would be disrespectfully presumptuous don't you think? Personally, I'm actually surprised at how close I can relate to both student A and B. Everything except selling Dope...I swear lol. He basically described a white kid with those questions...you were most likely thinking of a white kid when he asked. Youre supposed to open your eyes and not believe its a black kid. And youd never ask a white kid "Why Harvard?" youd probably pat him on the back for shooting for the stars. Theres differences in culture that just have to be accepted...as you can never truly understand unless we switch skins for a day. Its impossible to understand....though it isnt impossible to have empathy. Does that make sense?
Nah, I can't say it makes sense to me at all. Yes there are differences in culture that should be universally accepted. But if a person feels provoked or insulted about being asked whether or not they want to be a part of one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world then that sounds like personal insecurity to me. Example- If I was good enough at basketball and I got selected in the NBA draft and they asked me why I wanted to be there then I wouldn't say "if I was black you wouldn't ask me that." I'd just be grateful for the opportunity to better my life and to pursue something I like at the highest level. I don't give a fuck about the racial demographics of whatever organization Id be joining.
I think the movie is great but when he said "If I was white would you even ask me that question?" That makes no sense yes he would still ask you that question atleast where I live you have to write a motivation letter for almost everything.

He's saying you shouldn't question him just because he doesn't look like the typical Harvard student, isn't from the typical place a Harvard student might be from...just look at his resume. This movie was about breaking down those barriers and social stereotypes that keep up from moving forward.
+Drew Gibson the whole monologue was about racial stereotyping.... the whole point of the movie was race.... if you didn't like it until that moment you are insanely ignorant if you don't think that race defines the world today and that he was wrong for mentioning it
This movie was good until the end.this speech was glorifying how him acting white was better and made him better than everyone around him;he's selfish. But the bottom line he isn't a good person. He did chose to sell drugs. He blackmailed and almost killed a gangster. Why? Because he wanted a sure thing to get into Harvard. He's a hypocrite. The character tries to use his perfect academic profile to justify everything he's done. "If I was white would you even have to ask me that question? The admissions board doesn't care if he's black or white. He's putting words into people's mouths. It's the demonization of everything around him which makes him a hypocrite. He should've done a speech about how he persevered. But instead it had to be a race thing. This is why we can't move past this country's racism problem. Btw if someone pulled a gun on a real blood they wouldn't find some understanding and be cool the next day. Malcolm and his mom would've gotten fucking attacked and murdered.

I respectfully disagree. he says most of his life he's been caught in the middle of who he really is and how he is perceived by everyone. throughout the movie he always said he was different and was fine with it. he didn't like what other kids in his class did. he got good grades and aspired to go to college. that behavior you call "acting white" places glass ceilings on ourselves. white people are not the only people allowed to be smart. by saying that's "acting white" your also saying to act black is the opposite and to be dumb. He is saying it's okay to get good grades, listen to whatever music you want to. that's not acting white. that's being yourself and you are still black. this is the deep message this movie tries to portray. we already know about racism. we don't need another movie to tell more of something we already know goes on in the world. What we do need is to tell each other it's okay to do good in school. in reality when we actually put our full effort into stuff, we create and produce some of the best things this world has to offer because of where we come from. we see the world from a different perspective.

the question is not directly to the admission board and such, but to his principal and all the other people throughout his life that questioned him, his abilities or his ambitions based on his skincolour.
