Clapton used to go to a small Washington club he was playing before getting a little recognition in the early 70's. Unsung master but a player's player. Played on early R&R records and worked with Dale Hawkins (Suzie-Q). Told a story of how they used razor blades on the speakers to get early distortion - in the 50's, about a decade before Dave Davies (Kinks) who many think was the first to do so. He got it from guys like Roy.
My brother, who fancies himself as somewhat of a music afficionado, never heard of Roy Buchanan. As he listened to this version, his jaw literally dropped. No further words were said.

Found Roy in 74 . At a hole in the wall record store. Spotted the “ Live” album, a picture of a butcher shop somewhere “ Buchanons meats” or something similar. Down by the river , Hey Joe , and Roy’s blues. I never looked back. Jeff Beck was a disciple of Roy.
Roy was one of my favorite musicians. I saw him about 15 times. Even have him sign a Mets schedule from 1979. Still love Roys Bluz from Livestock more than any song.
'They' talk about Tele greats, Tele masters and Tele this and that...from the King connections, to country boys, on to the rockers and to the back bone of Elvis's band but NO ONE CAN PLAY THAT INSTRUMENT LIKE THIS MAN COULD!! PERIOD
I would've thought you'd at least say "He's got serious chops". Ha. And just to let you know I still say playing fast.. i just might say fast as fuck. Pardon my French.
There's a difference between shredding and playing fast blues. I like Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Smashing Pumpkins, but they have nothing on the likes of Roy, or the Vaughan brothers
Roy Buchanan could really captivate his audience ... 2:36 is proof of that. When I was a young lad, I bought a few Roy Buchanan albums, and when my mother saw his face, she said what a nice looking man he was. My mother's name was the name that was given to Roy's Telecaster. An eerie feeling now that I think about it.
Dear Mother of GOD!!!! This just keeps getting better over the years.....the crowd's minds are beyond blown away. Such a polite gang they were. Trips me out all of the talent that has just vanished....

Be the way, great name Mr. Beefheart. One of the most memorable shows I've ever seen was the Captain and his band way back in the mid to late Seventies. It was incredible. It was at San Diego State and filled with rabid Captain Beefheart fans. The band came out first playing some angular Tropical Hot Dog style tune, and when the Captain strolled out ever so cool, the place went mad with unhinged delight.
My discovery of Roy is today 1-22-2024 and I’m in disbelief that I never heard of him until now!!
Im astounded by his talent . Im 63 and have never heard of him. Just got 3 of his best cds today from ebay and cant quit playing them.
I bought one of his albums and it occurred to me this guy is up there with THE best. You can't play better than that. Geez....
Or the rest is up there with Roy!
This is so good, it hurts my soul.
It does man... It tears me up. Deeply.
Did you hear the Studio version, it's in the album (That's What I Am Here For), man, that really brings tears to my eyes.
aden2013 nj
it really ticks me off that guys like roy, rory and gary werent put on a higher pedestal!! oh well, the true cats really know!!!
You kiddin, this is fucking boring
Found Roy in 74 . At a hole in the wall record store. Spotted the “ Live” album, a picture of a butcher shop somewhere “ Buchanons meats” or something similar. Down by the river , Hey Joe , and Roy’s blues. I never looked back. Jeff Beck was a disciple of Roy.
There was a PBS special on him in 71 or so where he was introduced by Jerry Garcia
That's the first time I have heard anything by Roy Buchanan - Incredible,,,,,!
+Paul Rogers He is something else, my man.
Same here man, I just bought a telecaster and came here to see how it should sound....now I know all I need to
Don't miss the entire concert !!!
PERIOD
What a jam in heaven , Roy B., Jimi H., Rory G. Johnny W. Duane A. R.I.P. all stars!
Don't forget about Danny Gatton
Don't forget about those Crossroads. Maybe not an angel in sight.
ALVIN LEE RIP.
I'm a 69 year old guitar player with all these young people it's called shredding in my day it was called playing fast.
I would never call Roy a shredder. Shredders play with absolutely no feeling, just the opposite of Roy.
Right. Also called "playing with taste", often without stupid overdrive levels on which shredders always rely.
😎
Saw Roy in 78..bday present..American Music Hall..SF..unreal..saw him 6 times after that before he was murdered..RIP FANTASTIQUE
Murdered! I feel the same about that!!
My man appears as if he’s in deep reflection while literally just wailing on the tele! Absolute fire! 🔥
Saw him play back in the 80's. Totally blew my mind as well as my ears lol.
How did I miss this Legendary person ❤ straight up awesome 🤩
Roy Buchanan could really captivate his audience ... 2:36 is proof of that. When I was a young lad, I bought a few Roy Buchanan albums, and when my mother saw his face, she said what a nice looking man he was. My mother's name was the name that was given to Roy's Telecaster. An eerie feeling now that I think about it.
I just loss my brother at 59 years old. This for some reason gives me calm.TY
Sheer masterpiece.The Renoir of guitarists.
Brought a tear to my eye. God he was just fantastic .
Clever use of the volume knob. Amazing performance and tone. What a player.
Umm, you're thinking of Beck if you mean while pulling strings. Buchanan was a master in changing tone between riffs.
He puts so much soul into his guitar playing, it really pulls the emotions deep out of you. What a great great guitarist he was.
Dear Mother of GOD!!!! This just keeps getting better over the years.....the crowd's minds are beyond blown away. Such a polite gang they were. Trips me out all of the talent that has just vanished....
Roy Buchanan was one of my favorite players when I was teaching myself guitar 50 years ago. This man was an incredible talent but he had some inner demons he just couldn’t tame.
Those volume pot swells on a Tele just kill .
He's got those Twins cranked hard!
As an old fart that grew up in Fairfax Virginia I know exactly who Roy Buchanan was, saw him many times and sadly it's all over now
As long as his music lives, it will never be over.
Your watching the technique on a telecaster by a master guitarist. I will never forget him and never have. Thank you for posting this video.
I just saw an interview with Mick Jones, he said Roy Buchanan was one of his heros.
Never really heard this guy before but he turns out to be every bit as good as his reputation suggested. Having heard Hendrix phone in versions of this towards the end of his career (as his fans expected him to play it), it's a pleasure to hear this and much more dramatic too.
