      100% this. Look at what happened after they got rid of Brent Harvey. I think that is the main reason for the downfall

    Remember during negotiations for McKay, Clarkson turned around and said the reason North were playing hardball was because 6ft 5 blokes don't grow on trees.
    Then he passed on both Curtin and O'Sullivan even though he knew key backs or the lack of key backs was an issue.
    Looks kinda like a bed he made tbh.

    Instead of giving these teams draft concessions why not give assistance through squad depth concessions. Example your able to recruit up to 6 players anyone over the age of 30 and get a 80% discount in your in the TPP . That way the draft would be compromised, it would balance thier list . For example a senior player on thier last 1 year contract such as Tom Hawkins could be offered 1M and only 200k would be counted . I’m sure he
    Would go with Geelongs blessing and would give him a good retirement fund, while making the Roos more competitive

    Jimmy's 100% right, the AFL can't just throw draft picks at strugglers. A bit of soft cap relief maybe? A better ability to develop and keep the talent you have drafted might be more beneficial than a revolving door of young talent you don't have the resources to develop.

    Whoever gets Tarryn Thomas I think North should get a second round compo pick even though he was delisted. If North didn't have Sonja Hood or Jennifer Watt in charge I think Thomas still would have been at the Roos. I dont think McDonalds spot is secure and he is better off retiring at the end of 2024 or 25. He wouldn't get a game at another club

    • @andyandrew7557
      @andyandrew7557 4 месяца назад +1

      @Burningthunder90 regardless of the hand out the AFL want an evenly balanced comp and that includes North being more competitive to keep up with the rest of the comp. He was a top 10 pick & North would be crazy not to try to get some compo pick for him even if they delisted him .

    • @andyandrew7557
      @andyandrew7557 4 месяца назад

      @Burningthunder90 the so called charity doesn't justify where they are on the ladder. They are rock bottom last and have been for 4-5 years despite the draft concessions. All 17 other clubs have a playing list that is way ahead of North and if the AFL doesn't step in to further help North they will lose the young talent they have got to be poached by other clubs. I've heard that Essendon are interested in Zane Duursma to try and get him to play with his brother,St Kilda have got their eyes on Davies Uniacke, Zurharr has had interest from the Swans. As for Tarryn Thomas ,Geelong Sydney and GWS are interested. That's a lot of talent that could go out the door and then North are further back to ground zero . I believe if the AFL wants a thriving in a national competition you need all 18 clubs to be competitive on and off the field. They clearly need help with list management, development of players,and creating a winning club culture. The only future upside for North now is that if they can nail their next few drafts ,get their playing list and development right with the talent they have and start winning games before Tasmania comes in ,North could be in a much stronger position than what they are now. Once Tassie is in they will get the best multiple draft access of talent for at least a couple years or more and all the other clubs will be affected by that

    North have let go the best senior players or had them poached. They left no one for the leadership group. North could chop every senior player barring LDU and be in a better place at the moment. I don't know how they arrived at Simpkin and McDonald as captains obviously they got that wrong they provide no presence, leadership or hardness to the side. It's like North Melbourne's trades there is zero thought, they recruit what they don't need instead of filling the glaring holes.

  • @devilwarr1or

    Or....admit that this is the afls fault?
    Free agency was designed to PREVENT this happening remember? The premise was top clubs wouldnt be able to afford to keep all their stars meanwhile bottom clubs would be able to offer more to entice them to come over.
    ..... yea this NEVER happens except for gary ablett junior who was a huge exception.
    Top players stay at top clubs on less money, good players from bottom clubs go to top clubs on top dollar or less knowing they will play finals and contend. Notice its been THE SAME teams able to stay in the window and always get the good players to come over? Geelong, Sydney, Port, Brisbane Melbourne, Tigers during their golden run and even after being able to being in taranto and hopper hoping to pinch 1 more flag.
    No ELITE player from a top contending team will go to a bottom team to help a rebuilding club even on double the pay. Its always players past their prime who have already won a flag and earned their top money cashing in their final few years.
    Also the go home factor, jackson at freo won his flag, may as well go home on top money and no matter what happens your satisfied.
    And clubs have salary caps they cant just offer infinite money to try to bring people over, theyre stuck.
    What incentive is there for cam zurhaar to stay? He'll get the same money either at north or elsewhere so may as well walk into a freo team on the cusp of finals.
    LDU can walk to any team he wants next year with the same mindset.
    The afl have created a 2 tier system and wont admit it has destroyed the competition.

    • @devilwarr1or
      @devilwarr1or 4 месяца назад

      @Burningthunder90 I agree north has made mistakes, my initial point however was the fact that the system is designed to make it virtually impossible to get out of the bottom rung.
      North in last years draft recruited for the backline Zac fisher, Colby mckercher, Tony Pink, bigy Nyuon, moved Charlie combden to defence and 2 of their other first round draft picks are key defenders.
      That's 7 players that they selected or moved to defense alone last year. That's not going to come to fruition immediately.
      As for JHF he admitted he didn't even try at north, last week in the herald sun they noted how he sat out team building sessions because of his attitude. The infamous "ice bath" incident, going back to Adelaide without telling the club. That is NOT a dedicated player regardless of environment.
      Back on point north has TRIED to recruit elite talent with mega money and contracts, Dustin martin, Josh Kelly, Isaac heeney, Andrew gaff, the list goes on. But they all stayed with their clubs on the same mega bucks.
      The premise of "well noone wants to go there" is true.... but then how can anyone alleviate that?
      "Better environment with better people".
      ....so the club wants to bring in better people, those people won't come because there's no better people there already.... see the Paradox?
      If Ben Brown stayed, there is your second key forward with larkey, if Ben mckay stayed, there is your key defender along with griffin logue who returns Midway this year, if zurhaar and ldu stay they solidify the team even more etc.
      But the system is designed that any decent player north has is poached easily by other better at the moment teams because "your the diamond in a pot of weeds" and this cycle can't be broken.
      Robbie tarrant and Shaun Higgins were captains and leaders at north.... yoinked by Richmond and Geelong in the flag window as unrestricted free agents and everyone wonders why north has no leaders....

    • @devilwarr1or
      @devilwarr1or 4 месяца назад

      @Burningthunder90 Higgins was NOT asked to leave he was asked to stay.
      Ben Brown was offered a 3 year 750k a year Contract, his management wanted 4 years at 800k. North didn't trust his knees and didn't increase their offer and said that's it take it or leave it, they again didn't shop him out.
      Brown actually came to fruition with his knees as he's played only half the possible games he could have at Melbourne due to his knees and affecting his form. But he had that 10 game patch that led to a flag.
      The players were happy to see the back of jhf based on his attitude he was giving players! What? Are they supposed to cop his half assed training standards and attitude and give him Roses in return? I doubt any future prospect is using him as a basis on how the club treats departing players considering every other player HASN'T received the same vitriol when they left (Anderson, Dumont and specifically younger talent not mature respected heads like Higgins and tarrant)
      As for not choosing elite defenders like Dan curtin ...he hasn't played a game yet for adelaide how "elite" can he be? The other elite player in Connor o Sullivan has played 1 game....
      Name an elite mature defender that was available to recruit. North didn't keep mckay because...I think only once in all of free agency has a team had a free agent player want to leave and the club matched the offer... what does that tell you about the system?
      If north matched McKay's offer and he still chooses to leave as 99% of players eventually do North HAVE to trade for him and essendon has a huge upper hand to undercut North with a low offer. Getting pick 3 for him maximised his value.
      The only other defender of note was estea ratagolea who was always only going to port and tbh he hasn't set the game on fire.
      It's easy to say they got no defenders but there's none out there, griffin logue returns in 5-6 weeks and I pray he stays on the park and he and combden can become a good 1-2 key defender combo.

    • @devilwarr1or
      @devilwarr1or 4 месяца назад

      @Burningthunder90 lol saying you want to stay just increase your offer and I'll stay is not the same as showing loyalty. Players at say Geelong took paycuts to stay together, Ben Brown and Shaun Higgins did NOT.
      Getting 30 touches at vfl level is not the same as afl level.
      Yes North have got alot of work to do but none of what you said negates the reality and fact that free agency at its core has failed to do as its designed and they won't do a thing about it or admit it's failed it's core concept.

    why is north where its at. partly because there arent enough good players in the league. gws and the suns introduction drained the talent pool badly. north was sent to pound the grass in tassie. and also joined the sunday league. no primetime game$ for you struggling roos, how lucky for them and their small supporter base. the afl can play a whole 'opening' round to please four clubs no one cares about but cant make one of the long time clubs, more appealing to up and coming players to play for.

    After a very successful period, from 1993-2000, North spent 20years topping up, being competitive with limited resources, living mid table and playing some decent finals campaigns, without making a GF. The thinking was, north can't afford to bottom out...........but here we are, after a second reset, with no option, other than staying the course. Considering recent set backs, a bit of luck would be nice.
