This video is very very useful especially for me, a beginner. I have been looking for the vedio like this for almost a month but found none. Now I am crystal clear. Thanks again! From Thailand!
Finally! Someone to explain how to arrive at the band length best for the shooter.Thank you so much. And guess what? The mathematics actually make sense. I am the dumbest person alive when it comes to math. I am now a faithful subscriber.
Thanks Gamekeeper. I used a slingshot 50 years ago when I was a kid. I had forgotten how long the rubbers needed to be. Your post did the trick. Thanks from and oldie.
just getting back into shooting catapults after not picking one up for about 35 years .... learned so much from watching your videos ... Quality mate, thanks !
Mate, you're a star! Being new to this (after a hiatus of 40 odd years!) I got myself an OTT slingshot and just clamped in the elastic. My draw length is the same as your, and I discovered the bands were way too long! Now adjusted it is way more powerful........cheers!
So glad i found this ! Just got into the whole catapult game and thought i was not getting enough power ( shots dropping off ) worked it out using this method and chopped a good few cm off the bands . Made a huge difference thankyou so much
I ordered my first slingshot recently, been trying to understand everything and it’s so confusing, band thickness, also having the right size ammo for each size band. This really helped!! Thanks mate
If you're not hunting or pest control, you normally wouldn't reach 0.8mm band thickness unless you're prioritizing band lifespan cause that's the advantage as it gets thicker. Matching band thickness and ammo-weight cause if the ammo is too heavy, most of the contraction speed is eaten up by gravity of that ammo, if the ammo is too light, well it just doesn't go as fast, I forgot the reason, try those regular plastic BB gun bullets, I think 4~5mm, they still fly fast but not as fast, that's what I mean. You can try shooting sardine cans if you don't have a speedometer/chronometer
I am such a newbie so thanks for repeating it so many times :-) I like your way of shooting because as a bow shooter the anchor points are the same. Thanks BB
perfect timeing ive just started making a few catys after a 20 year break and i was wondering how to get this right with modern latex thanks for the knowledge ;-)
not all bands can stretch to 6x. get a scrap band, mark two points and they're 1cm far apart, and stretch it to like 99% of it's limit, in my case it was 5cm stretched, so divide your draw length to like 4.9cm
thanks for explaining this for us. I have been trying to set up a new catapult and this has given me the last bit of info I needed. ol greybeard dino ; - ) >>
Thanks for that, could you demonstrate the effect of full power with the correct measurement using the crony against incorrect bands please. Great video...
Im just going to say, without any extra archery references.Once you find your anchor point.Lets just say -against your cheek, right below your dominant eye. Every time you draw to fire.Return to that exact spot every draw.Keep focusing on the exact anchor point until it becomes automatic. Your accuracy will improve and becomes consistent @ a specific distance.
When we were kids we would use our body parts to determine our size and fit to a whole plethora of of different things. From pant size where u would use ur elbow to ur rist all the way to building ur own personal sling shot where u would use ur finger tips to ur wrist, and most of the time it will be the best fit to ur needs. Now building it also plays a big part u will notice that u have 2 to 4 cm of extra play that is the extra that u use to tie-up ur rubber to ur forks. 99 percent of the time it will be a perfect fit unless ur using real heavy rubber bands. As kids we used bicycle tire rubber and then moved up to the rubber of a motorized bike it was called a Thomas that's was the best rubber as a kid we could find and let me tell u the sling shots that were made with it as kids we were all envious over. They were incredibly accurate, durable, and low maintenance. Probably because the rubber from the factory was made to last with no maintenance.
Many thanks for the info just started in shooting slingshots and learning all the time any advise on band and ammo size keeping draw length correct for long practice sessions without excessive fatigue and subsequent loss of form etc for newbies lol..... cheers 👍👍👍
Hey chab... If you have an active band length 14,5cm that means you have to put extra cm to it.. Coz that is the extra peace that goes into the fork when you're fixing the band.. Otherweis you loosing from 14,5cm minus 1cm.. Cheers
Hi john thanks for another great vide you've really helped with my catapult shhoting since watching your channel recently brought one of your ppsg's and cant speak highly enough about it great frame best ive ever ise my accuracy has greatly improved with it and your tips on shooting and aiming also i lost your email my bands arrived about two weeks ago now and would you be able to do double 20-25mm bands made up and put them on the website for sale thanks Chris (on parents account)
Just got back into shooting catapults again, first time since I was 14 and having a lotta fun shooting targets. Im a bit obsessed tbh ha. I currently have a Barnet Black Widow, but am looking to get something a bit more advanced. Any ideas?? PS, I live in the UK. Thanks
great video John, measured up and shortened my bands today but had a load of fork hits, would you lengthen them or is it just something to get used to? Cheers
I'm finding 8.9 times out of ten my 'lastic gives up the ghost in front of the pouch holes. It's a bit 'cheap' but I'm reusing the cut downs for my 'standard' anchor lengths. Not with me? Get a PFS....justification for buying one.....sneaky, right....i...! Better now? Still no? You set up for the half or full butterfly for your PFS, then you still have length in hand for your 'usual anchor' length cuts. If you get busted for buying a PFS tell her it's Economical Utilisation....or... drink beer until she cheers up? Or....get another one.
i've been wondering this for about a week now, and have lost alot of draw length, obviously loosing power. Does the width of the bands affect this divide 5.5 thing? Thanks
It probably depends on how strong you are. My estimate after looking at his bands is 3 cm wide. If it's too hard to draw the slingshot, you can always reduce by a few millimeters, I imagine. Hope this helps.
they should be matched to the weight of the ammo you shoot, the heavier the ammo the thicker the bands. if they are too thin you sacrifice power but if they are too thick there will be too much energy left in the bands at the end of the shot causing faster band wear and hand slaps
Just did this even left it what shouldve been a hair long yet it slaps the fuck out of my hand now...where as before i never got touched by the bands...and i mean BRUTAL slap...its unshootable now even with gloves on.
@@GrandmasterHobbyist Did anything improve? Watched video. Measured my draw length. Divided by 5.5. Cut and installed bands. 100 % improvement. Good straight forward video. 2 thumbs up.

Thanks sir john for info....keep safe..😷
Wow!im wondering how on Earth should i set up my own band length properly.thanks for this very informative vids of urs men!
Great video John! I need some resistance at the draw length to keep from wavering when sighting. If there is no resistance you can't stay stable.
Thanks for all the great videos.
Quick question - does the length include the parts of the elastic tied to the fork?
Iam waiting for your support of karnataka word for the first time as a child is the best for the next two weeks ago but it's also a great 👍
In inches use 4-5x and add half inch for tie off. 20in draw length divide by 5 =4, then add half an inch. Band length would be 4.5 inches.
Super thanks , I needed to know this !!! but add 10 cm more for tie them to the fork and pouch ?
Thanks for the tips sir..

i think the first way you did it as allot of bands an tubes have more or less stretch than others so your best check um like you first did
would ye add another half inch for the bit thats tied onto the fork for yer over all band lengh sorry ifs thats a stupid question

How do you fasten the bands onto the slingshot?
Pritt stick and nails, make sure to cure it in the oven.
have you moved from your trusty ppsg to the ppmg john ?
Owen Skillington si think he moved awhile ago he said in his comparison video
Id spoted just after i posted this comment cheers jack
can i use surgical for bands...
very intresting video i make many slinghshot but they aren't perfects
What size BBS do you use
Depends on the band.
