I have been debating with myself whether to wear shorts or pants on my upcoming backpacking trip (I have OR Ferassi). I normally wear hiking shorts when hiking in the summer, but I am expecting bugs to be a bigger issue when hiking the CT from Silverton to Durango. Also, I am thinking of using a 3L poncho instead of my OR Helium rain jacket. It will look stupid, but it will protect my backpack as well as me. You did not mention gloves, which is where I am most likely to first feel cold. I will bring light wool gloves and waterproof gardneing gloves. I also will use a very light wool buff for wiping sweat, or added warmth, or added neck sun protection. Glad to see you are still posting.

Yeah the running shorts are light and provide an alternate bottom if one gets wet, so I don’t mind carrying both. Andrew Skurka talks about ponchos in the book I mentioned in the description and ultimately went with the rain jacket; I’ve never tried it. Good point in the gloves and I’m going to try to find an insulated pair of rain gloves in town. Skurka uses these which I’ve tried with a thin liner. Thanks for watching! andrewskurka.com/review-showa-282-gloves-cold-wet-conditions/

You indicated that the REI pants and OR Sun Hoodie are your base layer-do you not wear underwear?
Next time you’re at my place we can refresh the DWR on your stuff.

How frequently do your clothes rub you the wrong way?

surprised you aren't using the good ol' Frogg Toggs Ultra-lite2 rain jacket. It weighs around 5oz, cost like $15-$20 and is completely water proof. Yes, you'll sweat in it lol
