  • Is the new Nahvular Eclipse Retractable fountain pen a good buy or a bust? This pen had problems starting on day one. The Nahvular fountain pen brand, formerly known as Narwhal, recently produced a new retractable fountain pen to compete with the likes of the Pilot Vanishing Point, and the Platinum Curidas, called the Nahvular Eclipse Retractable fountain pen. Featuring a click pen style mechanism, and modern non-fish like theme, how did the Nahvular fountain pen brand do at their attempt at changing things up from their usual acrylic and ebonite fountain pens? Are the issues with the pen shown in this video bad enough to make you decide not to buy the Nahvular Eclipse retractable fountain pen? Don't buy this pen until you see this review!

I appreciate that they are trying to do something different. I’m not a fan of capless pens to begin with, but I definitely would wait for version two if this was something I was considering.

As a left-hander *and* someone with smaller hands, this is gonna be a no for me. 😔
I have a couple VPs anyway and I probably shouldn't buy another retractable FP, so it's fiiiine.

Honestly, I have the Iridium model and have not run into any of the issues you have. I haven't gotten any dry-out, but even if I did I always keep an empty sample vial filled with water handy to facilitate the capillary action into working again. As for holding the pen and operating it one handed I find it is easiest to just remember the nib is towards the clip and then in one fluid motion I grasp the pen at the clip with my pinkie & ring finger then press the top with my thumb. It's unfortunate for those who don't have large enough hands to do that. What they could do to get one handed operation is to grasp the pen as I suggested and push the other end of the pen against themselves or another surface - then there's no worries of stabbing yourself with the nib.

F’in genius!!! I’m going to do that. Just simply poke my chest with the pen back side as soon as it comes out and boom easy peasy!! I really feel dumb for not thinking of that. lol.

I'm a rare fan of the Curidas over the Vanishing Point...but only because of the writing. The Vanishing Point got the actual mechanism right. The Lamy Dialog 3 got bonus points for an impressive mechanism, but I was not a fan of much about the pen.
I appreciated your honesty on this pen. The looks turned me off. And the pen's thickness reminded me of the excessive thickness of the Lamy Dialog 3. Not a fan! And the complication of the mechanism was even worse than that of the Curidas.

Unfortunately I had the same issues. The blind cap came off and it took a bit to make sure the cheap glue/adhesive was cleaned out of the cap and off the threads. Got that issue solved. Then the hard start. I had to take the pen apart and thoroughly clean the upper part of the pen to get it to stop doing that. It seems that if any ink gets up in that upper part, it will keep that door from fully sealing. Solved that issue. It's not a bad pen but I think it was rushed in production. They, being Nahvalur, sent out an email to us who pre-ordered it that stated that shipping would be delayed a couple of weeks to "take some pressure off of the producer". That leads me to believe that it was rushed and corners may have been cut to get the pen out as promised. I, for one, would have gladly waited an extra week or two if they could have gotten me the pen without the issues. I am going to try and do my first video pen review on this one....My wife always says I have a face for radio so my mug will not be shown (not as dashing as you are Roy lol).

To open the pen I push the pen down with the nib. Up. I have also hard starts. I am using a PIlot cart and cover to supply ink, so far it seems to be working.

My Vanishing Point nib mechanism works just fine in the Eclipse as well as the Moonman A1. The only thing I don’t like about the Eclipse is how fine the medium nib is. I “tattoo” my thumb with all my my three click pens, and JP have drawn blood with all of them. I did have a hard start today which is unique among my click pens.

As usual a great review. Love your style. Sorry for your loss. When I saw the pen I really liked the design and the size because I prefer bigger pens. I now have three and really like all of them. I just turn the pen upside down and push and it works fine. I checked and none of the blind caps are loose but I will watch them, One of the pens dried out more but I used the nib flow fix from Inquiring Minds and it works great now. I have only used cartridges so far but I just refill the cartridges so I don't use the converters for these (Pilot) style pens. Have a great day and stay safe.

Nice review, and sorry about your loss. I say props to Nahvalur for trying something new and re-imagining a capless pen. But, I'm pretty sure this isn't a pen I'd enjoy. It seems like the main thing that made it a good pen for you was how well it wrote. But, given the variability in nib manufacture and the what seems like some pretty serious QC issues, I have to wonder if the pen I'd get would actually write as well as the pen you got.

Excellent review. Nahvalur has not been very responsive to repair issues. I own a Nautilus and wanted to fill it. I unscrewed the piston knob and the inner sleeve that secures the piston assembly came out of the barrel. The glue gave out. Now I could use a bit of glue and reattach it, I think but I wanted them to fix it. I sent in a claim and, no reply. Should I just apply my own glue and take a chance?

I had the hard start and nib drying out issues with mine. It does seem like ink is getting stuck in the back of the converter and now flowing to the nib.

Yeah, I think this is the 3rd review I saw a pen with this slight crook of the nib, but I've seen that problem with the majohn A1 I've bought. I guess it's not easy to get the tolerances for this type of pen, which makes me realize how good pilot QC is on the VP. I agree with you that this pen has some early production issues, and certainly the shape of the pen makes it more akin to the curidas in the handling.
Thank you for the video... And sorry for Stevie.

My issue with this pen is that it uses the Majohn A1 nib unit, a pen that costs $23, but Nahvalur charges $100 for this. I appreciate the innovation of the look, but given the source of the nib, this pen shouldn’t cost more than $50.

Thank you for this review. I was really excited about this release, but I think I will be skipping the eclipse. I own 5 Nahvalur pens (3 different models) and love the brand. But this one is just not for me. I respect all of the work that went into it, but it looks like a Pilot vanishing point nib section in a different body. If the body was an improvement or positive variation on the Pilot VP I would still buy it, but this seems a bit clunky and doesn't operate in the way I would prefer (easy, single hand click)

    • @PenBoyRoy

How to pronounce "Nahvalur"? We, the "Nahvalur" brand, changed our name from "Narwhal" to "Nahvalur" since August 2022. But we maintain the same pronunciation for "Nahvalur," so it is pronounced exactly as "Narwhal"
So, they don't want us to try to pronounce an Icelandic word.

@@PenBoyRoy My old username was "Fendran M". You sent me an Opus 88, like, 5 or 6 years ago, I think. My phone is so old I can't use the RUclips app, so that username is extinct. BTW (and this has nothing to do with you), it turns out the seal on that Opus involves a plastic plunger shaft and an O-ring. The O ring rolled off the shaft to the nibward end of the barrel, which I couldn't see, and I ended up cranking the shaft down on top of it and bending the shaft. There's no way to disassemble those pens, so that was that. Was a good design otherwise.
(I had a hunch that "nahvalur" was Icelandic, so I googled it. The FAQ from Nahvalur pens was one of the top results, so I just pasted it here.)
