    Someday when I win the Lottery, I'm going to train up a team of oxen, and when there's a snowstorm, we'll just go around pulling out cars that slid into ditches for free.

    Are oxen the same as cows?

    • @coggeshallfarmmuseum
      @coggeshallfarmmuseum  Год назад +1

      While the definition can vary from context to context, the word "cow" typically refers to female cattle who have reached adulthood and/or had a calf. In other words, all cows are cattle, but not all cattle are cows.

      How I understand it: A cow is a female bovine. A bull is an intact male bovine. A steer is a castrated male bovine. An ox is any bovine with a job, a draft animal/beast of burden. Usually oxen are steers, because bulls are harder to control, and cows are more valuable for their milk and ability to produce offspring. But I've seen cows and bulls with jobs, too -- it's just less common.

    Are oxen castrated?

    • @Whammytap
      @Whammytap 2 месяца назад

      An ox is just a bovine with a job. Could be a cow, bull, or steer (castrated bull). Steers are most common, castration makes them more docile than bulls, and cows are more valued for their milk and mothering skills. :) So as a general rule -- yes, but strictly speaking -- not necessarily.
