Liu Kang's progression from humble main protagonist to 4 time Mortal Kombat champion, to undead vengeful zombie to scorned revenant to humble god & protector is underrated character development.

The reason he looked different in MK1 is because he was supposed to look more like a Monk. This is why his cartwheel fatality does not make the screen dark unlike the other fatalities.

That's because those are real people, they hired 2 actors to dress up like Liu Kang, and videotaped them doing those moves. Then the footage of the 2 Liu Kang actors from those tapes, were digitized into the game.

@TheSixthSLoT oh 100% Lui Kang is the GOAT. I love Johnny Cage but Lui was only ever killed by being overwhelmed by greater odds like Shang Tsung and Quan-Chi or Raiden. Granted JC was killed by Motaro but allegedly he's not that big a threat compared to most defenders? Maybe just bad luck for JC there

The 1st and 2nd one still appear to have the most REAL PERSON appeal than the rest. Thats what it was in the early 90s, When that first MK hit the arcade and people saw how real the characters looked. At that time it was like HOLY SH*T it was friggin amazing man. When part 2 came out.. Now THAT WAS A BIG FN DEAL.. To have been playing in the arcades at that time was incredible. Tons of people just watching people play, would put your querter up on the screen to mark your turn cause there would be like 7-8 people there. THAT WAS AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE. THANKS ED BOON
Yeah, MK2 was peak MK. Everyone was playing it. Now, it's a smaller clique and the characters are just rehashed gamey engine generations, not motion capture realism.

Everyone agrees that MK2 was prime MK for the aesthetics and clarity. It was also peak MK generally given that EVERYONE was playing it at the arcades and Doom on the computer when at home.
It was the peak of mocap which is what you want for this game. It becomes too gamey looking after 3.
