What gets me was good he was when he was 10 years old. You go back to and listen to his early stuff like "Who's Lovin' You", "Got To Be There", "I wanna be where you are", and "Maybe Tomorrow". It still is rare to find someone that young and that soulful in their tone and delivery of vocals.
Even today, modern producers are studying his background vocals and harmonies. And they marvel at the amount of layers in each track. THIS was MJ's superpower: his ability to harmonize with EACH take so consistently and so fluidly. It was audio velvet.
uh, no... modern producers don't marvel. They know how recordings were and are done. If there are 3 notes then typically MJ would sing 6 tracks of bg vocals or if he wanted to triple track, he'd duplicate each of the 3 notes to get 9 tracks which would thicken it up but modern recording engineers and mixers know a lot more than you give them credit for.
People don’t really talk about what an incredible vocalist/singer he was. His dancing was unreal but he also had such an amazing voice. What an unbelievable once in a generation talent.
You can tell that he hears the arrangement the whole recorded finished song in his head while he is singing by his noises he is making in between lyrics keeping time and all. The vocal was no better on the album. Its perfect here.
We can blame Michael for auto-tune. People heard those incredible harmonies and were like, "We can't possibly harmonize that perfectly!" So, audio programmers got to work .. 😄
MJ recorded his lead vocals from beginning to end in one take. Of course he could not do all of the background vocals in one take, but he certainly did the lead vocals in one take.

Really burning his candle at both ends, but when your young you love that kind of pace! Quincy said Michael was the ultimate artist, easy to work with and did his home work so when he walked in the studio he was prepared and ready to go. No fooling around trying to figure out how to approach a song in a certain way. Quincy said Michael would come in ready and lay down three or four backgrounds in 3 or 4 part harmony on 3 different songs, then come in the next day and do the leads. Quincy was amazed at much they got done in a short time. Michael had "instinctively rhythmic senses" and those grunts, hiccups and squeals were his signature way of keep a pace and timing for moving through a song and giving it personality a flair! Groove, let the madness in the music get to you. Life ain't so bad at all...alllll....if you live it off the wall." All four upper and lower vocals are Michael's. He's got a great natural high tenor voice. High falsetto; "life ain't so bad at all. Live your life off the wall!" (Live life off the wall). All are his vocals! Quincy Jones said that while they were recording "Off the Wall" Michael was still on the Destiny tour with his brother's. He would fly back and forth, record some stuff with quincy Jones, then jump back on a flight to get back on stage. He was burning his candle at both ends making that album and still he was fantastic! Quincy also said Michael was great to work with because he knew the songs by heart. He did his home work so when he walked in the studio he was ready. Not fooling around deciding how to approach a song. Studio time is very expensive, even back then and Michael was a "dream artist" because he worked hard. He was not lazy.
