Royal Enfield 535 GT Asbo 40 testing standard vs performance exhaust and confirm fuel venting ok.

  • I realize we have already seen Asbo 42 here, and Asbo 43 is in the pipeline, but this has been an earlier, stalled project which was to be fitted with the same performance cams as Asbo 24 and 33, but these cams have not been available in recent times, so we had to make do with the standard ones and do the best we could for now.
    Following on from the last outing to an mot test, where we were blighted by engine stoppages, thanks to what turned out to be a trapped fuel tank breather pipe. The first run in this clip was to finally get an impression of how this machine might perform with the various upgrades, but still with the standard exhaust system, which, if nothing else, is extremely heavy. Next, the following run with the performance exhaust system in place was cut short when I remembered I hadn't changed the camera battery!
    Finally, a run taking in the usual short test route was completed, where I am certain there was a marked increase in performance with the new, performance exhaust system fitted - it must be a benefit just ditching all that weight and the machine sounds like it means business, as well!

    Those Continental singles have their own virtues on the right roads, don't they? And the carb and new exhaust really seem to let it breathe the way it's supposed to. Another success, so well done!

    My son bought a 535 brand new a one couple years ago and I couldn't wait to try it, but once I did I was a bit disappointed especially with the ride the vibrations just became to much after an hour of riding my hands were a mass of pins and needles and I couldn't wait to get the bike back home again.
    I know it's a big single but with today's technology you would think that they could have done something to counter balance the engine.
    I really love the look of the bike it's a shame it's let down by the way it rides and runs.

    Bloody nice, Paul. Picks up waaay quicker than the bog standard Gt I had for a short while! I wanted to tune it but couldn't justify the expense. So sold it and spent the money on the other bikes! 😉

      I agree. I remember being quite excited about these machines when they first appeared, and then I saw the performance figures and specs. I would have probably bought one if they could have topped the 'Ton' in standard form, but they will get nowhere near, without spending lots of money on top again, so they lost one sale for certain.

    Hi Paul you did a great job here the bike is running really nice, a complete open reverse cone megaphone wouldn't go amiss even if only for the noise and thinking you're on the TT course though it did sound nice at the end. I'm getting to know these roads nearly as well as the roads around me, Islandmagee Co Antrim. Thanks.

    Hello Paul,
    A big fan of your builds, Just luv the work you do on these machines, Simply Amazing!
    Just out of curosity: With a Abso Crank, high lift cam & Ported head, what would be the approximate bhp on real wheel ?
    And what would be the 0 to 100 acceleration timming, would it be around 5 secs
    Looking forward to your reply!

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  2 года назад

      Hi, the power figures vary from engine to engine, as they can vary considerably on their compression ratios, cams, carbs etc, but a 500 Bullet engine will usually gain anything from 5 bhp to nearly 20 bhp over the standard output and, again, I have no figures, but accelerating in 1st and 2nd gears, some machines have been able to lift their front wheels.

      Let me try to be a bit more specific about the build & Goal..
      Donnor Bike: Uce Classic 500
      Big Bore 535 Conversion - probably will reach compression of 9.5.1
      Light weight Crank
      Ported Head
      Free flow exhaust & Air Filter
      UCD 33 carb - with bigger Jets
      Stock cam with Retarted Timmings - 1 tooth
      Looking to reach around a decent 35 wbhp, Goal would not be to reach top speeds given its not a GT 535 chassis, Happy with top 100 to 120 Kmph cruising speed, Just want to increase acceleration timming for easy overtakes on Highway..
      Please let me, know if you'd recommend any more changes..

    So the head has had all the Hitchcocks bits plus a flow job using basic principles? It certainly seems keener revving than standard with a lot more top end. Dd you change pipe and silencer? These engines seem remarkably tolerant of different settings without one having to change jets. My Twinshock KLX carb needs altering every time something in the exhaust is modified.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  3 года назад

      The entire exhaust system [weighing a colossal 15 kgs] is standard for the first run, after that both downpipe and silencer have been changed for aftermarket 'performance' items, weighing far less.

    Was it my eyes or were the clocks doing a bit of a dance on the second fast run? Would be nice to see exactly what could be obtained from one of these little bikes with a good bit of tuning work done? Especially if they can stand the strain at the bottom end better than the older bikes at higher revs??

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  3 года назад

      The clocks seem to do that on all of them, certainly those I have ridden. The yellow and the green machines I have footage of on here would probably be capable of 100 mph or so, with suitable gearing, as would this machine, had performance cams been available when I tuned it.

    was I hearing a lot of backfiring. Do you think there may be an exhaust leak allowing that to happen? Or is there some type of an air pump to please the government exhaust sniffers..
    I remember when this bike was introduced here in the USA, but there were never any dealers. The only time I saw this machine was in magazines. I always wondered what it would sound like. Reminds me of The Yamaha, SR 500.
