A summer general election will be announced by Rishi Sunak today, The Telegraph understands.
It is expected to be held on July 4, meaning it falls in the second half of the year as the Prime Minister has been indicating.
Mr Sunak is likely to make the announcement at 5pm after a Cabinet meeting wraps up.

We closed the economy on faulty data and aped the startle reflex of a Maoist dictatorship and out of political fear it was never again questioned. The Conservative British Prime Minister was forced to follow destructive policies by a wing of media that revelled in the authoritarian lockdowns and the jumped up nationalist in Holyrood who strutted the stage with bravado and confidence.
The economic fallout follows directly from that cowardice.
Labour won't make things better but the Tories will be punished for their lack of imagination, for their poor decision making and weakness. A lot more can be said and in the fiture will be. But the Tories are about to get their just desserts.
