    Quite a few years ago I worked on a trawler in Antarctic waters. Our primary species was Toothfish but Icefish were also targeted. They have a bizarre ability to completely vanish despite the incredible tech the boats carry. The boat I was on could identify the species, number and size of fish at 1300mtrs deep, it could also swim the trawl up and down side valleys in canyons and still hold course.
    A very enigmatic species for commercial fisherman.
    They taste delicious and look like a chrome Gurnard.

      @1998TDM 2 года назад

      @@pkernoob786 They already know along with the Spanish, Russians, Japanese and to a certain extent Norwegians. The Southern Ocean is rife with "pirates". Enormous resources are spent to track and contain illegal vessels and occasionally pirate boats are "detained", crew taken off, catch unloaded and used for target practice by military vessels, the pollution ain't great.. Depending on who's territory you are caught in. It's a losing battle. I suspect that populations like the Ice Fish in the Weddell sea are still around due to the massive cost of building Ice Class vessels, the weather and sea states are horrific, worlds deadliest catch x 10. The main Chinese fleet usually target squid in temperate waters, knocking a layer out of the food chain, less spoken about is the massive take of krill from the Southern Ocean. Another link in the chain being decimated.

    Another commonly known animal that can breath through skin is a Frog but what blows my mind is that these fishes don't have hemoglobin.
    If corals can grow in the depths of Antarctica then can there be phyto-planktons too? Maybe these fishes are feeding on them.
    On a side note this reminds me of an episode from "Into the universe with Steven Hawking". In it he says that maybe there is life on other planets but they don't follow the same laws of biology as we do on Earth. Maybe in some distant cold planet there is life that needs Liquid Nitrogen to survive and not water.

    A tip for the next fishes video. The plural of fish, is "fish". As in..... I had one fish a year ago, I have 1,000 fish today.

    Just wait until the Chinese fishermen find out about it.. the 60 million nests will soon dwindle down to just 60 nests..

    Great video. Why couldn't you use images of the nests as thumbnail for the video? Making use of good thumbnails would give better reach to your videos

    • @ianstobie
      @ianstobie 2 года назад +1

      It's easy to do A vs B testing with thumbnails. Image of cute human female probably beats obscure fish most of the time!

      But of course I agree with your main point, thumbnails and titles are vitally important! Veritasium has an interesting video showing how great the impact can be ruclips.net/video/S2xHZPH5Sng/видео.html

    This has possible applications in space exploration! If we as scientists could figure out a way to remove hemoglobin from the blood and replace it with another substance that also transports oxygen; that doesn't become viscous, we could in theory expand on the field of cryonics and send travellers to distant habitable planets, without the need for excessive resources.

    • @joediverfl
      @joediverfl 2 года назад

      That's a great jump in possibility.
      It really does seem that at some point we will have some type of stasis/cryonics and the ability to reverse it.
      I still don't understand why hemoglobin is not needed. Plenty of amphibians take in oxygen through the skin, but that doesn't seem to be a compelling justification on it's own. Nor as a camouflage.

    The nutrients come from the dead fish found in the nests. The guard fish will die when the eggs hatch to provide food for the babies.

      @roflcopter what? People are genuinely interested in following certain non-traditional paths in their careers. So looking up a LinkedIn profile gives you a quick look into how their career path flowed. Nothing is creepy in that. Maybe you will realise that when you grow up

    • @Dazak
      @Dazak 2 года назад

      @roflcopter like I said, when you grow up you will hopefully recognize the difference between looking up a LinkedIn profile (Fyi, a LinkedIn profile is like a CV/resume and maybe one profile pic) and creeping out on a FB page or Instagram. But I don’t expect that to happen anytime soon. Cheers.
