And next time they sleep, they dream of a humanoid Beholder that could possibly pass for a normal person, under the right lack of lighting. Perhaps having the eye stalks be flat-ish and ribbony so as to wrap around this humanoid Beholder like a cloak, only to unfurl out and reveal the horror within when threatened... or threatening.

The humanoid Beholder sounds very interesting. Especially one who doesn't know of their heritage. I personally would walk them a humanoid Beholder to my party. Imagine the complications and events that would play out because you had a Beholder on your party.
Agonizing Blast is good, however I would have chosen the Book of Ancient Secrets (Pact Of The Tome) invocation and taken every Ritual available. This would also free up space for another 5th level spell since you can just copy Ray's Telepathic Bond into the book and switch in out for something else (Divination or Enchantment). The 3 additional cantrips are useful as well.
Your design philosophy of balancing optimization and flavor is what I've used since I started with 4E. I build a backstory that makes sense of my mechanical choices.

Nice character idea. I will be using it in my next game. However, instead of selecting the Alert feat as the first choice, I prefer opting for Skill Expert. By doing so, your charisma score would receive a +1 boost, elevating it to 18 and granting you a +4 modifier instead of +3. Moreover, you'll have the opportunity to apply expertise to your perception skill, allowing you to fully utilize those additional eyes.

It worked until they entered a section I had based one of the demon lords passageways which corrupted the area around it in Avernus, generating an abyssal forest filled with carnivorous trees. They weren't solid... So it was possible for someone to DD into a tree's stomach on a low enough % roll if they messed up the distance.
I play in a seasonal campaign called the Arena, each season you make four characters and if you lose them all you are kicked till next season, its primarily combat with roleplay and sneakery in the backround. the premise is that each character has been captured and placed in a prison to fight at the end of each month for entertainment. I will play this character in the next season and see how long they survive
I feel like if you get DM fiat to let the Sorc spells be used with Int you could leave Cha at 13 get a more functional Dex and take just utility from Warlock. Not taking EB is probably heresy but going into a more control oriented build is nice depending on the party and you can grab another cantrip for utility in Warlock. Then you get more options for Invocations. Possibly take the Skill instead of Darkvision and take Devil Sight and Eldritch Mind. Definitely some options for this style of character.
I would bet, that a DM would let you do a sorcerer who has swapped charisma for intelligence as a stat mechanic. Generally charisma is a stronger stat to have (saves, checks, etc.) than intelligence. As a forever DM i might ne er use this as a PC but it would sure bring a lot of slice as an NPC in my current campaign.... Next aberration I'd love to see through this is a mimic
I'm thinking of making a character that is a sort of homunculus of several body parts from different creatures, specifically Beholder eye stalks for the hair [similar to medusa with her snake hair], Mind Flayer for the mouth [I'm thinking this character I'm making would probably use it like a scarf of sorts, since they don't exactly want to be caught again*], having scales like a Dragonborn, and having some Undead traits [for example, I would probably have mage hand flavoured by having my character take their hand off at will, before infusing it with some minor magic to have it float]. I might have the overall build be a sort of altered version of this, basically keeping the overall 'jack of all trades, master of one' thing while changing some spells to fit some of the other creature parts that form this homunculus. [*This is a part of the backstory for the character that I am making, no spoilers tho :)]
Tasha's mentions that changing a character's creature type doesn't really amount to much aside from how certain spells and effects affect them. Letting a Custom Lineage set their creature type to Aberration would be fine.
One of the weird character concepts I came up with is a mutant mind flayer. Obviously an aberrant mind sorcerer, but you not only got your power from an encounter with mind flayers, you're a full fletched one yourself. You underwent the ceremorphosis and look like any other mind flayer. Only, you work different. Be it due to some Freak whim of nature, or maybe you ate something weird as a tadpole, like a flumph, but whatever the reason, you don't have to consume the brains of sentient beings to stay healthy, instead you can live off of the radiant thoughts of beings around you.
At 23:00, you mention Devil's Sight doubling your darkvision. This is incorrect in a very fun way (bear with me here). RAW, Devil's Sight works on complete darkness; it has no effect in dim light (you still suffer disadvantage on visual perception checks). This means that, if a party member has a light source, the bright light from the light source and the darkness within 120 ft are both vivid as day, while the ring of dim lighting between creates a "Donut of Inconvenience." Now, here's the fun application to this build: As the Custom Lineage choice, you picked up Darkvision (60 ft), which comes into effect when dealing with dim lighting. This, in effect, removes the Donut of Inconvenience when using Devil's Sight (at least within 60 ft, depending on DM ruling). In short, the two types of sight compliment each other and remove the weakness.
I am a good friend of the Donut of Inconvenience :P You are right about that goofy ah ah RAW, I'm hoping they figure out what's going on with that with the new PHB
I've played a gazer with this exact backstory for her race for 3 years! Her name is Xilthiskaillks and she's a huge pathetic nerd and super fun to play. Her people are really embarrassed about their origin point lol.
@@DnDWorkshopShorts I wish the train wreck that was the psychic UA didn't discouraged WotC to release an actually balanced version of it. It would have been perfect.
I would have changed the 8th level ASI to be +1 Cha and +1 Con. You gain nothing for having a 19 Cha and a 15 Con. Might as well make them even numbers ASAP. I recommend this even more so if the campaign ends at level 13. At sorcerer 12 that +2 Cha works perfectly well. On top of that, unless I somehow missed it, I didn't see any mention of taking flesh to stone, finger of death, slow, or disintegrate, which are key rays of a beholder. Also, while wish is cool and all, I might have leaned more towards power word: kill. I can see people using polymorph to turn into a beholder for a time. Kind of fulfills a wish aspect. I feel like taking the fear spell wouldn't get much traction after a bit, so not taking the spell wouldn't be the end of the world. I do like the idea of making a "beholder". You didn't mention a patron, but an eye of the deep would work, and your summon aberration could actually be an avatar of that particular beholder-kin. As someone who's played 3.5, this gave me similar vibes. Back then you could actually play a beholder or even just a half-beholder-kin. It was great.
All phenomenal suggestions! You are correct in that prioritizing even numbers takes over anything else, but since I was building to 20, I figured I could take my time getting there :P But yes, the Eye of the Deep would be a perfect fit (maybe even the Beholder that spawned the character?). And I do miss the flexibility 3.5 gave~
Is there a way you could drop the names of the music tracks you used in the background in the beginning? I recognize it but it's been way too long to recall.
correction about devils sight its not just better dark vision unlike darkvision you can see normaly as in you can see everything color and all so id take devils sight personally because honestly with eldritch sight just knowing something is magical is not enough detail because just because an object is magical that doesn't mean its magical in a good way if eldritch sight doubled up to identify what they are id say it was worth it, but it doesn't. additionally eldritch sight isn't a passively active skill like devils sight is. flavor wise beholders are extreamly paranoid so being able to see at all times would be crucial in their paranoid minds.
If a beholder get born of a dream of another beholder and can have any aparence based on beholder fears, this mean a beholder who almost got killed by a human can create a humanoid beholder? Like 2 arms 2 legs a body
That's pretty much how our character got here! All you need is a DM to make a true Beholder NPC that made this character to try and wipe out it's creation!
@@DnDWorkshopShorts True, though unfortunately knowledge of "a slow day" would mean you're typically using it right before a short rest, at which point you're sadly having it _for_ said short rest. I suppose, for a warlock, it's a social maneuvering spell, best used when the party needs to be able to talk about people behind their backs right in front of them.
@@DnDWorkshopShorts of course, but you also added “beholder kin”, gazers are beholder kin. With the right DM, you could BE the beholder you always dreamed of. Just manage to become a spellcaster subclass for more flexibility. In a similar vain, I’m currently playing an honest to god red dragon in a reduced state, wings, breath weapon, absurdly high HP, the whole shebang.
In my games I let my players play whatever they want, if they want to play as a Balor, I'll make them an imp and let them work towards it, if they want to play as an animated awakened giant pickle . . . yes this has happened, I let them and they count as a construct, so if they wanted to play as a beholder then I would let them as long as they role played well and it didn't destroy the game for everyone else
Very cool themed build.

As a forever DM i might ne er use this as a PC but it would sure bring a lot of slice as an NPC in my current campaign.... Next aberration I'd love to see through this is a mimic
A mimic would be a fantastic build idea! I might work on that one soon!
A little late to the party, but I'm going to try this out in a new campaign. thanks!
Sure beats my beer holder joke build. But hey, the pun was worth it!
Let's meet in the middle and make a Bee-Holder Swarmkeeper Ranger then!
Yo, that sounds sick!! Best of luck on the campaign!
This is a incredible idea
Thank you so very much!
i dont know i just came here to say one thing and one thing only god dammit that beholder on the image of the video is f as hell man sheeesh
fr fr no cap?

Tasha's mentions that changing a character's creature type doesn't really amount to much aside from how certain spells and effects affect them. Letting a Custom Lineage set their creature type to Aberration would be fine.
Gotta keep things as low to the ground as possible, DMs have different rules at their tables
If you go for Devil's Sight, I recommend taking the extra skill, since Devil's Sight completely overwrites 60 ft. darkvision.
That's a really good point!
As always, let me know if you want to see any other build ideas come to life!
I got a few big ones planned, but I'm always down to move something up
Also, heads up, I finally added timestamps woo!!
@@DnDWorkshopShorts Do you think you could make a Behir like character? Its another classic dnd monster like beholders

@@DnDWorkshopShorts Appreciate it, and you
Now i want to create a character like this
Do it!! Issa good time
I recognize the thumbnail ya bastard
My brother 🤝
One of the weird character concepts I came up with is a mutant mind flayer.
Obviously an aberrant mind sorcerer, but you not only got your power from an encounter with mind flayers, you're a full fletched one yourself. You underwent the ceremorphosis and look like any other mind flayer. Only, you work different.
Be it due to some Freak whim of nature, or maybe you ate something weird as a tadpole, like a flumph, but whatever the reason, you don't have to consume the brains of sentient beings to stay healthy, instead you can live off of the radiant thoughts of beings around you.
Never thought I was gonna say this but beholder waifu?
Everything can be waifu, if you are dedicated enough
Probs, not gonna play a beholder... But I got a NPC sheet to add to my library
That's all I can ask for ;)
id love to see a slime one next lol
I got a good one in mind, actually
@@DnDWorkshopShorts ayo thats gonna be epic i cant wait
At 23:00, you mention Devil's Sight doubling your darkvision. This is incorrect in a very fun way (bear with me here). RAW, Devil's Sight works on complete darkness; it has no effect in dim light (you still suffer disadvantage on visual perception checks). This means that, if a party member has a light source, the bright light from the light source and the darkness within 120 ft are both vivid as day, while the ring of dim lighting between creates a "Donut of Inconvenience."
Now, here's the fun application to this build: As the Custom Lineage choice, you picked up Darkvision (60 ft), which comes into effect when dealing with dim lighting. This, in effect, removes the Donut of Inconvenience when using Devil's Sight (at least within 60 ft, depending on DM ruling). In short, the two types of sight compliment each other and remove the weakness.
I am a good friend of the Donut of Inconvenience :P
You are right about that goofy ah ah RAW, I'm hoping they figure out what's going on with that with the new PHB
You can use wish to cast antimagic feild and say that you are using your central eye.
Right? The problem is that Sorc doesn't get Antimagic field, only cleric and wizard :(
Cultured thumbnail i see.
Only the best around here~
I dread what your DnD Workshop Longs will look like lol
Prepare for a 10 hour treatise on how to properly use improvised weapons
Beholder can just dream of a beholder with a humanoid body and sex tada a humanoid behold who can reproduce sexually
That's the best part, it makes sense lore-wise~
I've played a gazer with this exact backstory for her race for 3 years! Her name is Xilthiskaillks and she's a huge pathetic nerd and super fun to play. Her people are really embarrassed about their origin point lol.
I am a simple man, I see the MGE Gazer, I click!
My biggest problem with the "build" is that Cha is the main stat and not Int.
My simple brother 🤝
Yeah, unfortunately Wizard or Artificer doesn't lend well to the theming, so we had to improvise some
@@DnDWorkshopShorts I wish the train wreck that was the psychic UA didn't discouraged WotC to release an actually balanced version of it. It would have been perfect.
... but... but that's a gazer...
Shhhhhhhhh....
@@DnDWorkshopShorts dang, u rite.
You are correct in that prioritizing even numbers takes over anything else, but since I was building to 20, I figured I could take my time getting there :P
But yes, the Eye of the Deep would be a perfect fit (maybe even the Beholder that spawned the character?). And I do miss the flexibility 3.5 gave~
My Lore for my Beholder Half Dragon is that her mother had a wet dream about a dragon
Ooooh! Saucy~
Is there a way you could drop the names of the music tracks you used in the background in the beginning? I recognize it but it's been way too long to recall.
The opening is the character creation music from Demon Souls!
@@DnDWorkshopShorts thanks a bunch dude 🙏
Admit it, half of you clicked on this video because of the Monster Girl Encyclopedia Gazer thumbnail. Don't lie, we both know you did.
I honestly did not expect it to be this effective...
Am I the only one who was lured in by the MGE thumbnail?
Definitely not, my friend. I'm still surprised it's still up
How to play as a Beholder. Step one; Be the DM. Congratulations! You are now playing a Beholder. Have fun!
Doctors hate this man!
You could reflavor the tentacle of the deep as a eyestalk
nice flavored build dude.
I ld advise to make the first ASI as +1CHA +1CON (16each) instead of the +2CHA +0CON (17/15)
That might be better to address one of the build's main issues (low HP)
@@DnDWorkshopShorts imo it s just an optimization, as the 2nd CHA point unlocks nothing, but +1CON does (HP+saves)
I dont know what level of depravity you had to endure to find that thumbnail, but bravo.
A depravity I endure everyday, unfortunately
correction about devils sight
its not just better dark vision
unlike darkvision you can see normaly as in you can see everything color and all
so id take devils sight personally
because honestly with eldritch sight just knowing something is magical is not enough detail because just because an object is magical that doesn't mean its magical in a good way
if eldritch sight doubled up to identify what they are id say it was worth it, but it doesn't. additionally eldritch sight isn't a passively active skill like devils sight is.
flavor wise beholders are extreamly paranoid so being able to see at all times would be crucial in their paranoid minds.
Fantastic points!
That's a cute beholder girl.
Thank you, got her from the Monster Girl Encyclopedia
Really love the background picture @ 6:00, where is it from?

Of course, we are enlightened around here
I recognize that character @dnd workshop shorts where’s your search history
Fool! You cannot stand my search history of Uo Denim and Oohira Sunset
39:25 - Neither Sorcerer nor Warlock has the Ritual Caster feature, so, no, you can't cast _Rary's telepathic bond_ as a ritual, sadly.
Eesh! You're right! Still not a terrible usage of a 5th level spell though on slow days!
How do you have a free feat to take at level 1 again? Is that a thing for everyone? Or just custom races and variant humans?
The latter, only Custom Lineage and Variant Humans
2:18 wrong. Sidekick class exists in Tasha’s, allowing you to play a gazer.
But Beholders are better!
Sauce for the thumbnail image?

Question... Can you do the same thing for a playable Chimera?
As the lion/goat/snake kind? Nah, not humanoid. But the genetic kind? Simic Hybrid's got your back
“No homebrew” he said, playing as a homebrew race.
Tasha's said we can play Custom Lineage as anything!
So what you're saying is... Time for me to make another animated awakened giant pickle so you would've seen this twice?
@@DnDWorkshopShorts Oh no, not again lol
