In the house I grew up in this book was always there and I never read it nor saw the movie till today. And it is a beautfiul story and a beautful film.
This is a turn of the century piece that is highly watchable. I watched part yesterday and will watch the balance today. This fascinating narrative explores the rural community that was bitterly divided during the aftermath of the American Civil war where miscreants can bear to see God-loving people living side-by-side in peace. Their one agenda is to create enmity, hatred and burn barns that will eventually drive families to destruction. Making her debut in this old-world tale is the very angelic Janet Leigh with Van Johnson as the young whistler who grabs and owns her heart. This is a film that is highly recommended to all Leigh and Johnson fans, the world over. A real beaut!!!!
