Lionel Legacy J3a Hudson 3RSed and weathered

- I got my new Lionel Hudson set up with a fairly proper 3RS treatment along with all my GGD NYC heavyweight collection. I bought this engine with the intention of removing the markers (or class lights, whatever) and changing out the headlight for the correct one. I replaced the headlight with a PSC part and lit it with a set of warm white 0402 SMD LEDs. I had to make up my own reflector and lens and swapped the numberboards from the Lionel headlight assembly. I swapped the pilot truck out for a Lionel ESE pilot truck which has wheels much closer to scale diameter and also sports a proper ~7' wheelbase. I also fiddled with a wobbly traction tire, replacing it with one from my parts bins. This helped to cut down on the hop this engine exhibited at speed. I was pleasantly surprised to find Lionel made the tender Kadee compatible with a comparative minimum of effort. Before my weathering efforts, I repainted the smokebox and firebox Engine Black.

THANK YOU SIR
Your layout is fantastic. The hudson is tremendous
The layout is so real.I loved the shot through the window and beautiful engine. Congratulations.
That is such a beautiful layout.
This is the best modeling in the whole world. (1) trees and brush -- outstanding. (2) sidewalks with grass growing out of the cracks -- outstanding. (3) Stained concrete retaining walls -- outstanding. (4) factory windows -- outstanding. (5) trackside buildings -- outstanding. (6) random truck lying around -- outstanding. (7) videography -- VERY outstanding. (8) trains - best yet seen.
I forgot to add the following. (9) sky -- this is the only layout I ever saw that implements a convincing sky. (10) sunlight -- looks like real sunlight illuminating the layout. How does he do it?
Totally agree - craftsmanship and attention to detail is second to None. This is top level talent.
Where’s the smoke? ;) just kidding! It is amazing!
pugblake thanks for the kind words!
A very nice layout. Your railroad is fantastic! The Hudson has always been one of my favorite locomotives.
Wow it looks brand new... Well brand new from older looking stand point from when I first saw it
Beautiful layout! Amazing weathering! Looks great Norm!
Great job. That locomotive looks spectacular. Well it just fits in with all the other spectacular locomotives and rolling stock and amazing scenery on a great model railroad built by a very talented modeler. It's hard to believe its an o scale three rail layout. I forget that until is see the rail. Amazing how good it looks. 👍🎅❄🎄☃️
Wow, I really miss the real steam engines of yesteryear. These beasts are alive with so much character. Gone are the days.
I Love Hudsons.
Absolutely beautiful!! Thanks Norm and happy holidays...
I really enjoyed this video Norm. Great shots, great weathering and superb scenery, I especially love the bridge and the gully.
Phenomenal Work ! Beautiful Trains ! Very inspiring.
Amazing exelent I loved !!!!! A lot of work and people who know the hobby! !!! One of the best layout
That layout is a masterpiece. Thanks for sharing!
Great job with the weathering! Superb job!
Brilliant concept. Superb videography.
Gorgeous model and a stunning layout!
Amazing job weathering. Thanks for sharing.
Heavyweights behind a Hudson at speed. all is right in the train world.
Man I love your layout.
Very nice NYC J3a Hudson. Looks & sounds great, very prototypical. Excellent editing with shots from inside the structure.
• Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
Beautiful views Norm!
AMAZING, WOW !!
What an improvement! Looks so much better weathered. I like your consist, too; plenty of head end business (and weathered). :-)
That weathering job is amazing. I need to learn how to do this.
Your layout looks so real
Great work as always, Norm!
Wow, it looks so real, even the shots from the inside looking out with the little lathe, great job !
in several shots, it looks exactly like real life.
Your layout is just AWESOME!! I just love the detail. How do you do it? Please keep posting more videos.
👀👀👀👀. Looks amazing!
Your workmanship is by far the best I've ever seen ! I have enjoyed all your videos. Is it possible to visit your layout in person? I am in Pennsylvania.
Awesome!
You have the most realistic layout I've ever seen! I think I recognize your layout from somewhere.
Wasn't your layout on a DVD from TM Books and Video?
MrBnsftrain thx, yes it’s been in a few..
No smoke ?
Was the guy in the building on the phone ? Tough place to carry on a conversation.
Wowie! I enjoyed this! The way you weathered your Hudson was outstanding! Did it come with those Scullin Drivers or did you add them on? I would love to see how you would do a Streamlined J3a.
Thx man. This model came with the Scullins.
Whoa, I would love to get into the Model Train business. But I can't afford these.
Great engine. How does she smoke at high speed?
Nice job I sub u
Please add a horseshoe curve section this looks so cool and real
Onion Hat check out Bob Bartizek’s layout for a nice Horseshoe Curve!
Love the way this turned out! I have to ask though, what replacement LED did you use for the headlamp? It looks to have a more yellow tint to it.
I ended up using a soft white 0402 SMD LED glued into a Tichy HO lampshade inside the new housing. Another 0402 was used behind the shade to light the number boards. Both are running at about 4mA connected in parallel in place of the original LED using its dropping resistor.

@@normstrains thank you for the info! I have just gotten the pacemaker set and never realized how off the Lionel models are of the J3s. One thing I have to ask, why did the NYC Hudson’s not have marker lights?
@@Mr.Funk92 they did earlier in their careers but were removed later. I tend to like the boilerface without the markers (or class lights). Besides, most of the 3 rail makers tend to use oversized and overly bright castings with crude screws and large wires.
@@normstrains Thank you for the information! I can understand that for the o gauge models. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us next!
Very nice. Does it have legacy fan driven smoke and whistle steam and blow down? Sounds great and looks great. Would love to see some smoke flowing out at speed but nothing really duplicates the real thing for sheer volume and opacity.
R F yes it does but it's turned off now that I have weathered it. I ran the smoke units in the first vid I did on this engine.
@@normstrains If it is not trade secret, what do you use to create such soft muted natural looking lighting to duplicate actual afternnon sunlight striking your layout at northern latitudes at the correct angles to produce long shadows and a full array of soft pastel colors? (Very unlike sunlight at the equator and most residential ceiling fixtures). I admire your artistry as it is truly in a class of its own, just like the PRR was.
@@rf8481 thanks for the kind words. My backdrop and lighting efforts have evolved a bit over time. No real secrets, just a lot of work and experimentation. I have always used 1/8" masonite over the base wall surface and at some point I learned to 'cove' the corners and properly mud and tape the seams (although I still have one spot that likes to crack on me). I used Glidden Snowfield (a very light gray) as a base color and sort of drybrushed a light sky blue over it. I did a second iteration of a richer sky blue last year and I am preparing for a third round over this Christmas break along with some experimental cloud painting. The lighting on this layout consists of 50 track light heads with 7 bare bulb valance lights in the center of main part of layout (using the house ductwork to bounce off of). I went from 2800K Halogen R20 PARs in the heads (and 'daylight' CFLs in the valance) to 3200K LEDs and then finally switched over to 5000K LEDs/bulbs. This took a bit of getting used to I think but now my iPad doesn't seem to want to 'warmify' as much as it used to. You may see a slight change in cast/tone over the last few videos I made. It's always nice when someone notices things like this as there is a lot more work that goes into it than I care to admit sometimes!
Do you have a blue print of your layout? It’s amazing!
Thanks! OGR Run 301 (Oct./Nov. 2018 issue) has the most current trackplan.
Never knew Hudson’s has Scullins.
This is stock Hudson wheels from LIONEL?
Fantastic layout, weathering too!
Yes, these are the stock phone dial Scullins. I dig them!
Norm Charbonneau
Stock sound package too?
@@machia0705 yes
Twenty five of the J3s had Scullins, along with one J1 refitted I believe. The most exotic Hudsons you could find were the J3s with Scullins and a flat smokebox front which gave them a completely different look.
7:22 Did somebody pull the emergency brake? That was a harsh stop.
How long did it take for your layout to be this detailed?
Onion Hat I probably had most of the major benchwork and scenery in place in 2014 or 15 and the early detailing efforts started then. I am always adding new details and even have a machine shop interior I have yet to film.
Who makes those passenger cars? MTH?
No these are GGD. The 50’ wooden express reefer is Atlas.
thank you for not playing the stupid crew talk if you had it. it is just stupid and too cheesy. have too mute when people do it. and that make it a shame when you don't here the other sounds. very nice layout.
Robert Rockwell I'm not a fan of the crew talk either. I do like the demo mode though, just wish it didn't use crew talk.
What track and ballast do you use?
Christopher Bradley Atlas track and Woodland Scenics Fine Cinders.
@@normstrains thank you. Your layout is the most impressive thing I've ever seen. I hope to have something similar to yours but I know I'll never match your skills
She has 5 chuffs instead of 4. Listen 👂
Yes it’s a bit chuffy
@@normstrains I knew I wasn’t going crazy
@@skiiipawbs good ol Lionel threw an extra one in there to mess with everyone
