I love how you actually run your trains fast. I feel like a lot of modelers just go slow, which isn’t too prototypical. Seeing an express engine doing what it was designed to do is super cool!! Beautiful layout too

This is the best modeling in the whole world. (1) trees and brush -- outstanding. (2) sidewalks with grass growing out of the cracks -- outstanding. (3) Stained concrete retaining walls -- outstanding. (4) factory windows -- outstanding. (5) trackside buildings -- outstanding. (6) random truck lying around -- outstanding. (7) videography -- VERY outstanding. (8) trains - best yet seen.
I forgot to add the following. (9) sky -- this is the only layout I ever saw that implements a convincing sky. (10) sunlight -- looks like real sunlight illuminating the layout. How does he do it?
Great job. That locomotive looks spectacular. Well it just fits in with all the other spectacular locomotives and rolling stock and amazing scenery on a great model railroad built by a very talented modeler. It's hard to believe its an o scale three rail layout. I forget that until is see the rail. Amazing how good it looks. 👍🎅❄🎄☃️
Very nice NYC J3a Hudson. Looks & sounds great, very prototypical. Excellent editing with shots from inside the structure. • Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
Your workmanship is by far the best I've ever seen ! I have enjoyed all your videos. Is it possible to visit your layout in person? I am in Pennsylvania.
Absolutely stunning! I've been on a real NYC kick since the announcement of the restoration of 3001, but man what a fabulous railroad in its prime. Might try and find one of these J3a's someday. Was it hard to convert the GGD cars to Kadee? I have a few in 3-Rail like the P70's and 12-1 sleeprers where they already have mounting holes, but some of the other passenger cars don't.
Twenty five of the J3s had Scullins, along with one J1 refitted I believe. The most exotic Hudsons you could find were the J3s with Scullins and a flat smokebox front which gave them a completely different look.
You have the most realistic layout I've ever seen! I think I recognize your layout from somewhere. Wasn't your layout on a DVD from TM Books and Video?
Wowie! I enjoyed this! The way you weathered your Hudson was outstanding! Did it come with those Scullin Drivers or did you add them on? I would love to see how you would do a Streamlined J3a.
I ended up using a soft white 0402 SMD LED glued into a Tichy HO lampshade inside the new housing. Another 0402 was used behind the shade to light the number boards. Both are running at about 4mA connected in parallel in place of the original LED using its dropping resistor. Here’s the old thread on some of the headlight mods: ogrforum.ogaugerr.com/topic/lionel-legacy-j3a-hudson-5418-on-my-layout-tonight?page=3
@@normstrains thank you for the info! I have just gotten the pacemaker set and never realized how off the Lionel models are of the J3s. One thing I have to ask, why did the NYC Hudson’s not have marker lights?
@@Mr.Funk92 they did earlier in their careers but were removed later. I tend to like the boilerface without the markers (or class lights). Besides, most of the 3 rail makers tend to use oversized and overly bright castings with crude screws and large wires.
Onion Hat I probably had most of the major benchwork and scenery in place in 2014 or 15 and the early detailing efforts started then. I am always adding new details and even have a machine shop interior I have yet to film.
Very nice. Does it have legacy fan driven smoke and whistle steam and blow down? Sounds great and looks great. Would love to see some smoke flowing out at speed but nothing really duplicates the real thing for sheer volume and opacity.
@@normstrains If it is not trade secret, what do you use to create such soft muted natural looking lighting to duplicate actual afternnon sunlight striking your layout at northern latitudes at the correct angles to produce long shadows and a full array of soft pastel colors? (Very unlike sunlight at the equator and most residential ceiling fixtures). I admire your artistry as it is truly in a class of its own, just like the PRR was.
@@rf8481 thanks for the kind words. My backdrop and lighting efforts have evolved a bit over time. No real secrets, just a lot of work and experimentation. I have always used 1/8" masonite over the base wall surface and at some point I learned to 'cove' the corners and properly mud and tape the seams (although I still have one spot that likes to crack on me). I used Glidden Snowfield (a very light gray) as a base color and sort of drybrushed a light sky blue over it. I did a second iteration of a richer sky blue last year and I am preparing for a third round over this Christmas break along with some experimental cloud painting. The lighting on this layout consists of 50 track light heads with 7 bare bulb valance lights in the center of main part of layout (using the house ductwork to bounce off of). I went from 2800K Halogen R20 PARs in the heads (and 'daylight' CFLs in the valance) to 3200K LEDs and then finally switched over to 5000K LEDs/bulbs. This took a bit of getting used to I think but now my iPad doesn't seem to want to 'warmify' as much as it used to. You may see a slight change in cast/tone over the last few videos I made. It's always nice when someone notices things like this as there is a lot more work that goes into it than I care to admit sometimes!
@@normstrains thank you. Your layout is the most impressive thing I've ever seen. I hope to have something similar to yours but I know I'll never match your skills

The Hudson, what a demonstration of dash and speed...
🍺😄😻🇸🇪👍🏻
Your layout is fantastic. The hudson is tremendous
Great camera work norm❤
The layout is so real.I loved the shot through the window and beautiful engine. Congratulations.
A very nice layout. Your railroad is fantastic! The Hudson has always been one of my favorite locomotives.
I really enjoyed this video Norm. Great shots, great weathering and superb scenery, I especially love the bridge and the gully.
That is such a beautiful layout.
Wow it looks brand new... Well brand new from older looking stand point from when I first saw it
Beautiful layout! Amazing weathering! Looks great Norm!

Man I love your layout.
Heavyweights behind a Hudson at speed. all is right in the train world.
What an improvement! Looks so much better weathered. I like your consist, too; plenty of head end business (and weathered). :-)

@@visionarylocomotiveworks9703 not too bad. I did these way before I got my 3D printers which would have sped up the process.

No smoke ?
Was the guy in the building on the phone ? Tough place to carry on a conversation.

Whoa, I would love to get into the Model Train business. But I can't afford these.
Great engine. How does she smoke at high speed?
Love the way this turned out! I have to ask though, what replacement LED did you use for the headlamp? It looks to have a more yellow tint to it.
