- In this video I almost got us stranded.
I show you why I love my #vintage Mallory YL #dualpoint #distributor and fail hard at putting it back together.
Also I discover some broken stuff I now need to fix.
Awesome.
If you’re trying to get 500 subs for the No Name Nationals, comment below!
ain't gunna happen but I guess it's worth a try! maby next year! help a brother out, ide love to come out do some racing and meet everybody!

I hope you're doing another video showing the field installation of the distributor and start up
i am 54 yrs old and have messed with old cars for 40 of those years,....you just taught me stuff i did not know. i got some thing out of this video,...just like that guy Tony, how ever when i had the stock engine in my 54 chevy, and my 65 chevy, always kept spare points and condenser in the glove box.now days with a HEI, i keep a module in the glove box.
It would be cool to scan that degree key and 3D print them for sale to those that are interested.
So I prefer the older variant of that guy, which is the Rev-Pol, Double Life, and also known as a YL series, but instead of being in the Unilite body like that guy, it is in a bigger housing. Both are fantastic distributors but fall short by miles compared to the dual ball bearing Accel units, they use GM style points which are much easier to set, and instead of having a bushing, they have a ball bearing at the base of the housing and removable retaining plate that seals off the points from the cap/outside air, and the retaining plate also housing another ball bearing that keeps the shaft from ever walking or wearing out. That is the number one thing that causes people to hate points or have issues, is when the bushing wears and allows the shaft to move which cause the points to fail prematurely. Thanks for showing this off and hopefully you can try out an Accel dual ball bearing unit
I was going to say approximately the same thing but, to be honest, I always used an Accel and never had a Mallory so I was watching to see if I was missing something.
But it's good to see rising demand for point contact distributors of any sort so that parts are getting easier to find once again.
I will have to check that out, I just like vintage Mallory stuff.
Accel makes great parts I think there Super Coil is there best seller
@@DaddysMoneyGarage i thunk Tony has one in bottle rocket if memory serves me right, you might have him show it to you
@@ScottsSpeedShop pretty sure slaghammer is getting one too.
Good job guys.
Nice tutorial.
I always liked the old Mallory distributors.
Great content.
Thank you, EM.
you guys made some good points today !
I love how user friendly this distributer is! Instead of having to break off springs and weld it perminatly you can adjust it to where you need or want the advance to kick it out faster for better throttle response!
WOOOO GREAT VIDEO 👌👌
Good job guys. Glad to see some young blood appreciate old school TEC.
Good stuff guys! I love the old school Mallory setup. I've got an old YL for my 440 that's been converted to Unilite. I love that thing!
At 10K subs , how about dropping the valve body and putting in a shift kit in the Police station parking lot?
If we make it to 10K I’ll do an oil change at a car wash without a drain pan and actually pay the monumental fine I’ll receive.
Good luck guys! Love watching the channel grow so fast, I’ve been at it for awhile now and nowhere near where you fellas are at! Great job! Keep it up!
I bouught the Accel version (no longer made) and plan to use it with an ignition box with one set of points bypassed, as that will give the desirable extra dwell time effect of the dual points with the fatter multiple sparks of the HEI and I like that it has the larger hei style top to cut down on Corona Effect (spiral arcing) which you can never 100% eliminate
I like my factory dual point in my Ford 289 HP. Most advance curve adjustments can be made by just removing the distributor cap and bending the spring mounting tabs.
you guys are good...i happy to see younger guys who know how to work on thier cars....this is a good demo how to.....
Nice Fury bro.
This is good stuff.
👍 Question tho . Why don't y'all just use Tony's garage? Or is trespassing on private property y'all's thing?
The shop is 40 minutes away and every parking lot we’ve used is like, 5 lol.
Good info! It’s great to see a NOS distributor, new in box with everything there! Don’t forget to mailin the warranty card 😃‼️
It’s actually been on the car for two years, I just popped it out before filming so I could work on the hood. Although I’m realizing I should’ve shown me taking it out so that it was more obvious how dire of a situation we would’ve been in if I lost something or broke it lol
Hi I really enjoyed enjoyed watching you put that bad boy back together I agree the Mallory was at one time the best but when Excel came out I think it was 9000 it was hands-down better I ran both in my 289 and I love the Excel
Your content is really good! You guys are in for big things if you keep it up. One day soon, you’ll have some kind of indoor all weather garage. Maybe not a palace like Uncle Tony haha but, a nice little start-out space. You guys are straight hotrod old school!
A nice pair of needle nose angled pliers for that E-clip retainer.
Was that really out the Fury or a spare distributor? Pretty big commitment for elective maintenance in a parking lot!
I think it's a new vintage part that's going IN the Fury. Or JYJ maybe.
Apparently someone has a ton of these old units in stock.
It was out of the Fury. I’ve taken it apart a few times.
@@DaddysMoneyGarage I want one of those tools that came with it
I haven’t seen one of those in a while. I bought a 57 Chevy when I was 17, in 1978. Had a 427,4 speed. Had a dizzy like that and a Holley 3 barrel carb.
Hey, great video on the yl dual point, I have one for my 67 vw beetle but don't have the instructions, would you be able to scan and upload them so any of us who are not lucky enough to have gotten them with the distributor can see them?
I’ve used the YL 541 Mallory distributions in my VWs for over fifty years. They kick ass and are far better than anything Bosch ever offered (except the 010).
Great video.
had that mallory dual point in a '70 383 ' cuda i had years ago . was easy to adjust , car ran strong .
Something my dad told me a few yrs back.....mid 90s.....if your gonna have something with points ALWAYS keep a spare set in the glove box.......just a word of advice from someone who still daily drives a 62 catalina all stock car.....that spare sets saved by butt from sitting on the side of the road more then once....
I usually do, I just didn't this time. I had already replaced the points and forgot to buy another set lol. My grandfather told me to do that years ago lol.
On my 69 Satellite with Direct Connection distributor I always used brass feeler gages to set the points because it's non magnetic and what they recommended. Is that still valid or old way of doing things?
real men use their hood of their car as a table when working!
good job!!✌👍👋🇨🇦
just try finding springs to curve that...
not a chance was it ever better than the Accel dual point
Much better than an Accel.
Hey..Is it possible to get the thickness measurements of the stepped Degree key
I miss the days of being able to work on a car without the need for a degree in computer sciences or electrical engineering...
You don't need a degree lol if you'd try it out you'd see that it's even more simple than all this old stuff lol
They make a tool special for holding e clips. It is worth getting one compared to the 3 hours you spend that time the Jesus clip shoots to God only knows where.
try to make such a video with an electronic distributor, betting that it would be pointless
🙄 😬 🤬🧂 👊
NO DAD JOKES.
@Oddbjørn Larsen: I don't see the point in your comment.. . . .
@@mortensen1961 correct... it`s pointless
This one was pretty funny. Question, are the points Mallory distributor specific?
Yes, they are. These are part number 25042.
Cool dizzy
Use pliers to put the C-clip on.
UTG says you can set wonna those up so she jump whenya hit da gas! Thanks guys. Lol.
i tried to play with points on my car. went with electronic after some frustrations.
dual points increase dwell time, and yes Mallory makes good stuff, now just use a Acell blaster coil with a ballist resistor
That's what I use lol
Gotcha, I see, YL........ came before......... the XL..
YL? not XL?
Someone have the key for sale?
Mallory makes great parts there mags we're there claim to fame
Those e-clips are easier to put in with neddle nose pliers.
Yeah I'm gonna do that from now on. I have a habit of doing things in the most difficult way possible and getting good at it, then realizing there was an easier way the whole time.
Also I didnt have any needlenose lol
No volume,
🤔
Why are y'all always filming in random parking lots?🤣🤣🤣
Why
Funny that you are now pontificating on "the best distributor ever made" when you only know what UT tells you. Do some push ups bro.
The grand irony here is that I got this distributor a year before I knew Tony, after trying a bunch of them and deciding on the Mallory YL, and then when I met Tony I discovered that he has like 3 of these on his cars.
I’m pretty confident about my opinion on this distributor, but I get it.
