I used to sail a lot when I was a teenager. Mainly a little Sabot and a Shalom 16. Both were forgiving. The Lido 14 tipped to easily for me. I'm glad you remembered the main rule - duck when changing tack. :-)
You know Marty, I have lived a full life here in California when it used to be a good place to live. I have worked many jobs, built two houses, fell many a tree, laid much tile, owned and operated a tow business, and a separate body shop with fourteen employees, I welded, straightened frames, painted, did full bodywork, and minor mechanical. With that being said, leaving much out, I cannot figure out how I'm twice your age...but only know half as much as you! You are the rare breed that just absorbs knowledge without being prideful! At 75 years old, I am learning from you, and am loving it. I would like to know if you work off the property at another job, and what area in N.Z. you live...just curious. All the best to you and your family Marty!
Brilliant comment, Marty is the classic Kiwi 'can do' pragmatist. Marty lives in what I think is the best part or New Zealand for a marine / land mixed environment without being over populated, the western end of the Marlborough Sounds. He's east of Nelson and west of Picton and south of D'urville Island if you are looking on a map of the South island.

I'm glad you pointed out the vang on the job list. Also, looks like battens would stiffen up the leech, and cunningham for better sail control. But even so, she sails! Dinghy for the win! Imagine how much more work there would be to fix a keel boat that got tumbled in the surf...

Marty that “drain” at the stern is called a self bailer. Flush it out to remove the sand and put some Vaseline down the side to keep it moving nicely. As a keen sailer I can’t believe how good these cheap repairs are to save this boat from the graveyard like many small sailing dinghys nowadays... this boat will be epic for the kids once they get a bit older!! Great repair job on that mast. I can’t believe how fast you were going in that small boat. Looked like you were going 20-30mph😄 Really cool and fun video, thank you 👍
Everyone myself included, all like nice big sailboats, but we all forget just how much fun those little daysailers are, Simplicity brings its own kind of enjoyment. Nice repair, I'm guessing your little ones will enjoy zipping around the lake with that thing, My earliest memories of a sailing dinghy was, at a summer camp when I was around 8 years old! I loved it, now I think of it lol I reckon they would not let little 8-year-olds, man a sail, and disappear at the other end of a lake, Poor kids these days, they don't have the freedom we had.
100% you can fibreglass over alloy / aluminium, no problem. You can do it in polyester, vinylester or epoxy resins using fibreglass, aramid (kevlar) or carbon cloths. All will work well and add strength / stiffness. No issues with corrosion of any of those resins / cloths in saltwater environments, surfboards and boats are built from them for that reason. There's also no galvanic corrosion between the metal and the resins / cloths. I'm surprised you thought, or others suggested, that could be an issue - boat makers have been glassing in metal bits on glass boats for many decades. A great repair and good on you for resurrecting yet another old bit of equipment - that can be great fun for the kids. A man of your many talents should soup it up and add foiling boards / rudder, it's all the rage nowadays, makes an incredible performance improvement if you can get it right lol. And you're a Kiwi, it's right up your alley and in your blood, look at your America's Cup wins!

Nice job, Marty. You know, the first thing I think of when trying to straighten a mast is the side discharge chute of my lawn tractor. haha.
