She asks for a ride. He obliges, ever the gentleman despite being a nervous hypochondriac come west to Arizona to take a cure. Now everyone thinks they've eloped, and a passel of angry folks is in pursuit! As the health worrywart, irrepressible Eddie Cantor is in a hilarious fix all the way up to his famed banjo eyes in this adaptation of his Broadway smash that's the first of Cantor's highly successful partnerships with producer Samuel Goldwyn. The songs include the ribald "Makin' Whoopee" and "My Baby Just Cares for Me," the dance sequences are staged with pizzazz by first-timer Busby Berkeley, the leggy Goldwyn Girl chorines include young Betty Grable, and the photography is a then-rare Technicolor® -- all perfectly paired with Cantor's exuberance and warmth. Some of the film's attitudes and insensitivities are reflective of its time, but there's much for classics fans to enjoy again and again in Whoopee!
Directed By Thornton Freeland
Starring Eddie Cantor, Ethel Shutta, Paul Gregory

2:05 what a sign of the times! Eddie imitates candlestick phone before correcting himself in imitating a 'modern' (at the time) phone.
People have always been interested in "whoopee", we've always had hormones. What's changed since then are the words used. Today, people just say "I want to f***" instead of "I want to make whoopee". And today, it's orgies. Then, it was petting parties. But, people have always said "having sex" since that's always been the official term.
Some of the older generations back then probably totally disapproved of this Eddie Cantor number. They probably found it disgraceful someone on film singing about having sex, and more of the older generations back then usually saved sex til marriage.
I wasn't talking about the subject of the song, I was talking about a split second of physical action when Cantor changes from a candle stick phone to a cradle phone. I think it pays to read the whole comment first. Not sure where you're coming from on this?
I read your comment on top. I wasn't trying to respond to the point of your comment, I was just stating my point of views on the subject of the song, I realize that it wasn't related to what you wrote. Here's my response to your point up top; yes, I did notice Eddie imitating the candlestick phone before imitating the "at that time" phone.
Alright then, it's just an odd way to comment. The 'reply' function is most often used to directly reply to what someone had said; you just threw me off guard with an apparent random reply is all.
Eddie Cantor was great 👍!
Every time I hear that dear,
old wedding march
I feel rather glad
I have a broken arch
I have heard a lot
of married people talk
And I know that marriage
is a long, long walk
To most people
weddings mean romance
But I prefer
a picnic or a dance
Another bride
Another groom
The countryside
Is all in bloom
The flowers and treeses
The birds and beeses
Are making whoopee
The choir sings
Here comes the bride
Another victim
Is by her side
He's lost his reason
'Cause it's the season
For making whoopee
Down through
the countless ages
You'll find it
everywhere
Somebody makes good wages
Somebody wants her share
She calls him toodles
And rolls her eyes
She makes him strudels
And bakes him pies
What is it all for?
It's so he'll fall for
Making whoopee
Another year
Or maybe less
What's this I hear?
Well, can't you guess?
She feels neglected
And he's suspected
Of making whoopee
She sits alone
Most every night
He doesn't phone
Or even write
He says he's busy
But she says, "Is he?"
He's making whoopee
He doesn't make much money
Five thousand dollars per
Some judge who
thinks he's funny
Says, "You pay six to her"
He says, "Now, Judge
"Suppose I fail"
The judge says, "Budge
"Right into jail"
You'd better keep her
You'll find it's cheaper
Than making whoopee.
He only rolls his eyes every third word😊
Every time he says Whoope just sounds cute
Well... Some things never change... ;-))
Great talent he was. He was Al Jolson's only real rival as an all-around entertainer.
Fun Fact. Eddie Cantor's Likeness was Featured in a Few Looney Tunes Cartoons.
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Coming on blu-ray march 3
winr waver yeah right
I own this movie
Some things, like love & marriage, don't change. However, the dollar has changed.
So, FYI:. $5,000/year in 1930 is approximately $70,000/ year in 2013
The lyric 'He doesn't make much money' doesn't much hold up then.
captain0ldy0da Women didn’t have to work, though. Only the men had to bring in an income.
american dad brought me here. btw hayley smith sings it better lol
You're in the wrong place. This is the original Eddie Cantor comedy version, Hayley sings the jazz version by Ella Fitzgerald or Frank Sinatra.
which episode she sings it??
Says he died in 1939, what was cause of death? Still a young guy
He died in 1964 at 72 from a heart attack.
@@markc4050 thanks for letting me know mate
He died in 1964. He, Gracie Allen, and Harpo Marx died within a few months of each other.
