Doing stuff like that always makes things feel newer, and cooler. Would do that with rattle cans in the late 70s and early 80s to our bikes when I was a kid. We would get old Huffy and Schwinn cruiser bikes, tear them down, paint, new BMX style bars, different forks, and build them into "scramblers" with cooler paint colors. Kinda a thing back then, before everyone got BMX bikes in the 80s

You should definitely get a chest strap for the Gopro. You get to see a much better angle on the trail and the fork/arm action is nice. I am really liking the mix of MTB and shop work. Keep up the good work!

Nice motivator to finally finish a bike project I've got to paint! A pre-ww2 skip-link 24" wheel single speed. Not an MTB but it is my very first bike that I started riding on at 4yrs old in the early 70's - nothing but gravel and dirt until 3rd grade. Dug it out of my folks barn in Iowa after decades. I'm doing a sort of resto-mod on it since a lot of original parts were too far gone and I'm using period pieces that I would have had access to at the time I would have upgraded it had it not been relegated to barn storage.
i liked the gopro video from your helmet better than where you had it in other videos it seems more stable now. makes me want to paint my bike it looks cool.

I was all the time buying junk with potential and repainting it. Especially guitars. Haven't really seen you with anything musical, even taste wise. Though your intro song is badass and maybe like Fu Manchu. I heard my cousin got my S10 running well and took it a few states away to TN! Glad it didn't go all that far. Love those 2nd gen S10s. Though those Nissan's like yours always looked so good. Step dad had one and we used to ride in it a bit. So it's real cool seeing your work on that. Man that Dodge truck is so dang sweet man. No wonder you parted ways with the red ford, that Dodge is super sweet. Saw a rare truck special and that was one of them on it. Cool deal with the head mount stuff. I hadn't realized you hadn't used that much. Man I had a weird thought. I wonder if they have a camera mount like preditors shoulder lazer mount? Might be a good compromise of it not leaving you out of the shots and also seeing what your eyes are doing. Either way, hell of a job. I get intrusive creative thoughts, prolly way off but either way, always enjoying your content.
Nice paint job, Dave👍! It reminds me back in the 90's when I painted my son's BMX bike more like Greg LeMond Team Z color (tri-color). It's possible that chain need a little more tension to cure the shifting problem. You can turn the little screw on the derailleur hanger in to put a little more tension on the chain. It is also possible they installed the wrong chain length or the shift cable came loose. Try to match the chain with the other bike
Good paint job it looks killer what I would like to see you convert one of those bikes in to electric since you are mechanical oriented I think it will be nice !
if you can mount the camera on the chin of your helmet . with these entry level bikes the place to start upgrades is the rubber followed by powertrain parts when you know what you want to replace the parts they come with for. at these price points microshift tend to beat shimano, and everyone else really on deraileurs ,levers and the rest
If you didn’t already figure it out the shifting is probably a cable issue, a hanger alingment issue, or high low screws not set correctly. All pretty simple things to attend to. The Shimano base model hydro brakes are very good for the money. Sram NX or GX derailers and shifters are also very good for the money. Set the tires up tubeless. It’s great for reducing flats, and they tend to grip a little better. Bike looks great.

@@thedirtheadshed That makes complete sense. Like you said, hanger alingment is very important. If you still can’t get the shifting dialed, a good quality cable and housing can make a big difference. It’s a pretty cheap repair, upgrade. I only use Shimano 4mm shift housing and stainless steel Shimano shift cables. I do like the jaguar plastic housing caps. They are a little longer than the Shimano and have a little better engagement. There are fancier cables and housing, but no real benefit over what I listed for the extra cost. Take what I say with a grain of salt, but I did work as a bike mechanic for a looong time. Like your paint job. Looks cool.
Awesome, more MTB content! I buy a lot of random frames to build bikes from, and I’ve really thought about painting them from time to time, but I don’t think I have the patience to do the prep and it don’t work unless you do the prep .

Not going to lie didn’t think we were getting a episode this week. I checked at 2 like normal. Anyway I took my nukeproof scout for a little rip yesterday. I got a 150mm for on it a 27.5x2.6. I built it myself. It’s such a fun “aggressive” hardtail I think you’d love it.
Gonna make the bike a lot cooler so the wife and kids will want to get out and ride. . . . . Makes it so cool that the wife and kids can't ride it because your always riding it. lol. Looks great. I've painted a motorcycle and a truck with that dupicolor paint shop base with great results outs of a cheap gun. The clear is hot garbage though. I like that moto, buy cheap stuff, and go have fun.
Can we also talk about the fact that you're just putting a bike in the back of a mini truck without having to put it at an angle or anything. Still sad it's getting harder to find long bed small trucks. I guess older is the way to go for that. Also, sick paint job.

I’ve always wondered can a guy purchase a “budget” mountain bike and upgrade the front and rear wheel bearings to top of the line to massively upgrade the bike? I’m sure there are ways to upgrade the bearings, but at some point you would probably be money ahead by ordering wheel set that has higher end hubs that are designed with better bearings
Dave, what weld-thru primer do you use on repairs? I am working on a 67 Mustang and am not sure if there is one that works better or if there is really much difference. You should make a series of vids on painting and prep. You definitely have the skills.

With as different as you feel the tires are, I would be real curious to know what the various air pressures are and how stringent you are on them. Couple pounds can make a difference.
Nice job on the paint! And is that a Raceface stem that came stock? It seems like at some point a couple years ago the sizes definitely went up, so I'm glad the small works for you. You spec some new forks for these yet? That's definitely the weakest link. I've had good luck with the RS Judy if you want to keep things cheap. Not a huge fan of the Circus Markhors.

Stick a fork from Ebay on it. Seems like people buy bikes and then upgrade the forks so there are decent oil damped forks that can be had. I bought a Trek years ago and stuck a Tora 302 fork on it from Ebay, upgraded the brakes to discs and the drive train to a 1x7 with half decent Shimano parts. I've been riding it ever since. How is that tiny chain ring with the giant low gear sprocket on the cassette? I usually climb standing up so I don't have gearing that low.

I bought 2 specialized hardrocks. When I was down in Georgia/Tennessee. Late 80's early 90's I always buy large frames. Large and Xl are hard to find.

We use to Ziptie the spokes where they crossed over each other

I haven’t found the perfect stuff. I don’t typically use weld through , I use rattle can self etch primer. But it’s far from perfect

I’ll stick to using a stir stick or a proper paint shaker. I don’t really need gold paint on everything I own

With as different as you feel the tires are, I would be real curious to know what the various air pressures are and how stringent you are on them. Couple pounds can make a difference.

Nice job on the paint! And is that a Raceface stem that came stock? It seems like at some point a couple years ago the sizes definitely went up, so I'm glad the small works for you. You spec some new forks for these yet? That's definitely the weakest link. I've had good luck with the RS Judy if you want to keep things cheap. Not a huge fan of the Circus Markhors.

That compressor has been amazing. Doesn’t seem to make any more moisture the a regular compressor

Stick a fork from Ebay on it. Seems like people buy bikes and then upgrade the forks so there are decent oil damped forks that can be had. I bought a Trek years ago and stuck a Tora 302 fork on it from Ebay, upgraded the brakes to discs and the drive train to a 1x7 with half decent Shimano parts. I've been riding it ever since.
How is that tiny chain ring with the giant low gear sprocket on the cassette? I usually climb standing up so I don't have gearing that low.
The gearing is pretty good. Doesn’t have quite as much range as the trek with the 12 speed though
You should figure out how to transport the bike standing up, the color would pop so good with the color of the D50.
