I would like to say that many of the AUs also had tragic stories like the creators of Underswap and Underfell discontinuing the AUs, and Flowerfell receiving constant harassment for being "Frans" even though there is no frans and the whole point of the story is to be kind.

underlust is not what it seems. it s an au that explains that the true love and true love only matters, not the lust. though then the creator of said au gave the ownershipt to fandom, and oh boy did they mess this au up!

Sorta, in the comic, the monsters had infertility so Gaster (or "Luster" in the character roll) injected everyone with LUST like Alphys with the Almagamets and DETERMINATION
@@MyDadCameBackWithTheMilk that's where Undertail comes in, Undertail isn't really an AU more so a rule 34 hashtag for the fandom, way back in the day because there were so many 18+ fanart for the characters flooding the normal Undertale hashtag people decided to use Undertail as the hashtag for rule 34 stuff, though it seems people nowadays seems to think undertail is an au. XDD
The one variant of "if undertale was realistic' that I considered well made was when it was a 3D animation about a sarcastic sounding jerk of a guy who was raised by giraffes just trying to find a way out while inadvertently doing a pacifist run. Also fan fact: someone once considered the concept of a Undertale AU where the monsters got sent to Australia after the war, but no one felt like going through with it because most assumed there was no barrier to be put in as the wild life would sort out the problem

i was an undertale kid and holy shit how some of this stuff fucked me up it's hard to see with stuff recently like Elisa gate or whatever is popular now being so young for me at least seeing a lot of the nsfw left me an almost out cast because i became the weird kid or touchy kid and i hate myself for doing shit like that but i'm lucky enough to be away from it and have that happen when i was much younger but i think about way to much i had friends when we where like that too and they feel the same way it's just how things that get really popular like for people who are young may end up being confused with a lot of things like how i was i saw things that i shouldn't in a much lesser light and that's the worse part i find is how it changed people but i hope this was less common for others

im so glad the undertale community has semi matured nowadays, currently the only problem the community has had nowadays are transphobes and just mean ppl
anything like weirdos who mischaracterised or oversexualized characters in horrible ways is extremely rare to find nowadays
stuff like AU's have became more serious and well made, etc
we have changed in a really good way and actually healed over time
the community nowadays (The discord main side of it atleast) is pretty small yet quite large at the same time
the popularity of the game dying down kind of helped the community to heal in some way, i myself kind of consider myself a figurehead of this side of the community and its honestly quite a nice place for the most part :)
it still has some bad things as said which pains me as the whole thing about the game is mostly friendship, but its indefinitely better.

Wow, now that I'm much older I understand how screwed up something like PJ's daycare was. But what I also think is super funny is how I actually liked the series a lot, and watched it on repeat on youtube. I've never dug deeper so as to find THE REST, at the time I just enjoyed the comic and all the deviant stuff in it flew right by my head everytime I watched it again.

I was one of those kids that was influenced by the pj's daycare thing, I thought it was completely fine, up until i rewatched those dub videos and also videos talking about it as a grown up. I didn't think that these influences can be that bad but experiencing it firsthand really gives me some perspective

Undertale was a big thing back then as an early teenager until all the uncomfortable stuff creeped me out a bit.
Now days times have changed and the whole community kinda grew up.
I am glad that we are now in a time where you can get more comfortable with the community and people can see undertale for what it is.
If you are refering to the normal undertale community you would be correct because it is basically entirely part of the deltarune or au community. But the said au community part is basically just politics at this point.

I've been in the Undertale community for several years, I did not realize how fucking unhinged some of the fan content was. I'm gonna stick with my curated non weird list of comics and fanfiction that are actually good stories.
Yeah agree, a lot of them are unhinged, but don't let this part of the wider fan base make you think that this is ALL of the wider fan base. I dig extremely deep in the fandom, there are some amazing gems that I think everyone should explore and see. Even if it means you see some of the weirdos. But if you want to enjoy the game casually that is ALWAYS good as well! We all just want to love and appreciate good art and stories.

same man. i've found little GEMS of undertale comics and fanfiction i hold close to my heart, i love them to death because they're so hard to find.
and by that, i'm not an sans AU fan even if some of those might be good, i'm just not interested in the 500 flavors of bone clones that all taste the same.. i prefer the niche of established-world exploring stories that work with the original game's cast. a few examples of the niche being Dogs of Future Past and Deeper Down, and others in the "vanilla-faithful" vein.
@@paradoxtatorstudios9681 I've read a ridiculous amount of Undertale fanfiction, so I know niche. If you want something dark I recommend checking out Flowey is not a good life coach or Fade Away, for lighter stuff consider You Monster or Redemption. All are in the highest tier in my opinion and follow somewhat close to vanilla, each with their own little tweaks.
i do think it's worth noting that the tumblr post toby fox made when announcing undertale's official release literally says "use #undertale for sfw fanart and #undertail for nsfw fanart". he spent time making work for homestuck & that informed a lot of his early fanbase and he knew this perfectly well lmao

My jaw actually dropped when dude started talking about the paperjam comic, I always avoided it and I'm glad I avoided it but holy shit I wasn't expecting it to go down that path.
I do agree with this videos veiws, but i just wanted to point out one thing. "Underlust" was actually made as a metaphor for hypersexuality and the effect the disorder has on ones mind. It was a vent for the creator and wasn't meant to be p/rnographic
She made adult content based on it, but the AU itself it's pretty mature while dealing with serious topics

I read A LOT of fanfiction, I just replayed Undertale after playing Deltarune for the first time. As I always do after finishing any content, either an anime, a tv show or a game, I go to Ao3 to see if there are any good fanfics of any ship I may like, so i went to Ao3 to look for Undertale fanfics.
Honestly, I hate how the undertale fandom is, specially on the fanfictions. The top ships in Ao3 are:

Papyrus (Undertale)/Reader (3162)

The numbers are the amount of works per tag, THOUSANDS of different works.
So, what do we have on the top 7? We have Sancest, incest and a child with a skeleton. I dont like xreader content but at least it isnt in the same level as the ships I just wrote. The only two decent tags are Alphys x Undyne and Sans and Papyrus (Platonically: just them being bros nothing weird)
I honestly prefer how the Deltarune fandom has been. It feels like a breath of fresh air, not 100+ different Aus with ships between 100 different sans, not as many popular questionable ships, just overall good and fresh content compared to Undertale.
To be fair, the vast majority of those were written years ago. The Undertale fandom has calmed down a lot, especially now that Delatrune is here. I think the crazy fans either moved on to other fandoms or grew the hell up

You started by talking about devolution but honestly the undertale fandom is more so an example of evolution. As time went on the low quality garbage and trends chasers all got filtered out and now a days the delta-tale fandom is filled with genuine fans who actually 1. Care about the games and even if the fan-work is bad it is at the very least a work of passion 2. People are now pickier with fan content which makes it so that often the popular works are of a higher quality than before

I always wondered why proshipping was so common in undertale than any other fandom I’ve been in. I remember seeing ships like frans, sanscest, and inc*stous ships back when the fandom was at its peak. I’ve seen people argue that it’s because the fandom was made up of mostly kids, but like… most of the proship art was extremely well made. It really made me realize how common it is for people to openly enjoy morally questionable (sexual) things.
So happy you mentioned how weird the frans ship is - it was even weirder of how popular the ship was. Seems like nowadays the proship artists have left and moved onto another fandom (thank god).
I have a theory that the only reason Frans (frisk x sans) was so popular was because it was the equivalent of a fangirl marrying Sans, Frisk is a doll that you put yourself in, that's why it has no gender and doesn't speak for the entire duration game, the only canon things is that they is a kid, in the game everyone calls you kid, heck, even monster kids says you are of their same age, but how convenient that frans fandom always makes frisk a woman with huge breasts and big hips and for some reason they hated a ship with logic like Soriel but they never gave arguments. Thank goodness Frans will never be canon.

What I have a problem is, is that Paperjam isnt another Sans, hes Inks/Errors Child (so another kid). Fresh is another Sans, so hes a lot older than PJ... More like... An uncle. My GOD I love videos like these! It's so refreshing seeing someone call out the toxicity and general weirdness of any fandom, especially a massively popular one like Undertale. I consider myself to be an avid Undertale fan-content enjoyer despite me not having played the game just yet (dw I'll try to get the game soon). I feel this much more with Deltarune though, as I adore that game and its fanbase about a billion times more than Undertale.
But yeah, as someone who is in the UT/DR fandom to an extent, this video is what everyone NEEDS to see. The amount of questionable fan content I have seen in this fandom is SURPRISINGLY large, way more large than I initially thought it would be. This is course does not diminish the AMAZING fan content others make--I personally write little things here and there--but it is very important nonetheless. Same goes for every other fandom too; not everyone is a creep and not everyone makes questionable stuff. There are always genuinely talented people in every fanbase!
With this being said, I haven't even watched this video yet lol, I'm commenting before I see it in full, but thank you for making this video. As I said, the UT/DR community, and by extension every other fandom, needs to watch videos like these.

Wow, after seeing this video i realized how lucky i am since i only knew about the "Story of undertale" animation (and the other 2 made by the same creator) and nothing else mentioned in the video, also, your amazing voice and your epic commentary made going through this cringe stuff easier, kind of like someone holding your hand as you walk through a dark forest.

If there was one Undertale au that made me uncomfortable, its Horrortale. The way the horror aspect is taken into an intense level is not what I expected from a horror comic. Not to mention this comic probably shows how terrifyingly horror ACTUALLY is.

i feel like these types of videos are very nice when it comes to popular pieces of media. like some sort of warning to not let other pieces of media become a cesspit like this and overshadow the good hidden beneath. i am. like i have no words. like i've never been into undertale but i've seen firsthand (back in 2015 when it was brand spankin' new) the horrible things that have come out of a game that has the literal message of "pacifism" as its root; it has always been something i avoided. the needle cookie incident strikes me the most fear and deranged whenever i think of this game and its community LMAO
also off-topic suggestion: methinks a type of video like this for danganronpa would be interesting considering it's been 6 long years since an official (good quality) game has been released in the canon storyline, the og creator left to form his own studio and make a brand new, non-dangan game, and the r/danganronpa subreddit recently banned tier lists, the top form of content on there 💀

I have a theory that the only reason Sancest was so popular was because there were no other slash ships in the game, the only ones were Gribblys, an NPC, Papyrus his brother (I will never go back to that place again) and Asgore who was not a handsome young man. My evidence is that there is this fandom called welcome home that is quite popular and has thousands of AUs but wallycest is not very popular and is not very well seen in the fandom, and this is thanks to Barnaby, who is Wally's best friend and who is shipped with him until the bones, Moral: if you ever create a famous media make sure to add some characters to ship with the most popular character, because if there are no ships in your story people will create them by force, and thanks barnaby for saving the welcome home fandom.

But like for real, I now remember some time in elementary school and my friends began talking about the “Frans Needle Cookie Incident”, but I was raised pretty innocent not to know what it was. I also came across that one panel where the… I think it was “Palette” said that whoever did it r*ped them, but I luckily didn’t find the actual scene, only the panel with the dialogue in it that was shown in this video. Come to think of it, I came across a LOt of Undertale content I don’t remember seeing. Like, I had vague ideas of what AU’s there are, like I for some reason, upon seeing a picture of Swap!Sans, was like “oh, he likes tacos!” and then i was like “how did i know that?” only to have a faint memory of a computer open to a white website w/ black text with a picture of Swap!Sans and a caption reading “Enjoys making tacos.” I also had a random instance where I was watching an UT animation, and since I never saw any playthrough of the game, I thought Undyne became Queen of the Underground after fighting Toriel, and that led to me figuring out it was HorrorTale!!!
But yeah, sorry for that tangent. It’s been fun watching this tho lol ;p Some parts made me laugh.

I remember my time in the fandom from when I was 15 to 19 and oh boy was I traumatised and saw some of the weirdest shit ( and even sadly watched PJ's daycare between 15-16 ), I even wrote a undertale parody of the "I will survive" song by Gloria Gaynor for a music exam when I was 16 and got a A for it 😂 But I just want to say two things and it's that this video was amazing and this second is for the used-to-be fans or still fans out there seeing this comment after remembering their cringy pasts with the problematic stuff. I don’t have a problem with nsfw at all, I just think that the internet in general has a problem where it’s really easy to find stuff accidentally. I literally stopped looking up characters names of google for references when I was a kid because I kept accidentally finding nsfw art. If we could just have a system to filter stuff out of public spaces by default it would be much better.

They're both about even. They both have good sides which is Fnaf fans trying to piece together the lore and liking their favorite games and Undertale fans just liking specific characters while also jamming to the music. And then the deeper darker side which is basically people somehow not being able to not trying to groom literal children and driving fan game creators insane. I don't consider the p*rn a bad thing unless with the fnaf p*rn creators they add the children souls which would be fucked up but in all the cases I've seen they don't because half the time they aren't even animatronics. Anyways both fanbases are good but when the darkside comes out you know shit is going to go down.

When I saw the title of the video, I expected to hear of the 2016 comment (and of course of the cookie incident). And to be honest, I wzs right. It was mostly 2016 stuff. Except fot PJ's Daycare, I think. It has never been a subject I looked into. But seeing this video, it feels... unsurprising. Like, I'm very used to this kind of stuff. It may be an unpopular saying, but glad to learn about this stuff.
But anyways, the 2016 fandom was wild. I wasn't there to see it myself, but I heard many stories from trustworthy sources. Back in the day, you were being harassed for a lot of things. You don't ship Alphyne? Harassment. You think Chara is not evil? Harassment. You do not like Sans? Welcome to the pariah zone.
And how is it today in comparison? If you explicitly state that you do not ship Alphyne, you will get negative responses, but no harassment (as far as I've seen). For Chara, all opinions tend to be widely accepted nowadays.
As for Sans? Well he's like the Charizard of the Undertale community. He was so overrated in the past (and even nowadays) that a bunch of people have decided that it was too much and decided to hate him as a response to his popularity. Now, you could call Sans both overrated and overhated.
And that is not finished with 2016. Many people have heard of what happened with Flowerfell at this point, but I have another story, and it is that of Flora Frisk.
Flora Frisk was an AU where Frisk tried to save Flowey and failed. It turned them into a plant/Human hybrid being known as Flora Frisk.
The author was just trying to make an AU and got harassed for this, by many persons. This is mostly a story of a person that got harassed for trying to find his way in the Undertale community. In the end, because of the harassment, he disappeared from Internet and deleted everything. He once tried to come back a few years later but he couldn't bring himself to do it.
That was the story. If anyone that reads this comment knew about this story, I would be surprised, unless I know that person. Also, I have screenshots of the harassment.
Also, I will add this, because I do not see people talking about it. The author seemingly has deleted the story of Underf**k from Internet. I do not know why exactly, but I remember that the AU got a lot of backlash when it got created.
In a similar vein, if I recall correctly, while the AU itself is pretty explicit, the story of Underheat is about consent. Just saying.
Oh boy, I feel like I'm going to get a lot of flashback for what I'm about to say. Anyways, I believe there's one big problem with the Undertale fanbase, and that is heterophobia. You're reading it correctly. I will not talk about homophobia (well, it'll be mentioned, but it won't be centered on it), but heterophobia.
So, I'm not talking about how, regardless of what you search, you will find art (visual or not) of homosexual ships, even if you search a specific heterosexual ship. That's not the subject, plus I have yet to find a fanbase that doesn't do this.
No, I'm talking about how, in easily accessible parts of the community, you can find AUs being widely hated just because they contain heterosexual ships (except for Asgore X Toriel and Dogamy X Dogaressa because "they're canon). I'm talking about how said heterophobic behavior is seen as normal, if not even encouraged in some instances. I'm talking about how you will receive backlash (small or big) for any comment that could be perceived as homophobic (whether it actually is or not), but you will never see such a thing for heterophobic behavior, if people do not right defend it. I'm also talking about how common this is.
Now, don't get me wrong. Homophobia is a problem, but so is heterophobia. And the way heterophobia is perceived and treated in this community is one thing I find quite shocking.
However, let's be honest here. There is all kinds of content made by fans. There are AUs that are more mature than Undertale (mature as in containing serious, adult stuff), and that's fine. Mature stuff doesn't make an AU bad. It just means you should try to know what you step into.
There are AUs that are very weird. Well, Undertale is weird. Monsters do not have the same culture as Humans. If anything, weirdness should be accepted as part of Undertale AUs.
There are AUs that exist to awaken fantasies. If it's not the kind of stuff you're into, it's also fine. Just don't look into it.
Yes, people in the Undertale community have sinned. There are questionable arts, of any form, but for a fanbase, that's indeed very normal. And for any active member, as stated in this video, this is just a normal Tuesday. Being part of a fanbase usually means you eventually will have to accept this kind of content. If you're not part of it, yeah, there's stuff that will shock you.
And of course, there is a lot of good stuff. In fact, if you're a newbie and actually think about it, you will find far less "sinful" stuff than any other kind of stuff, unless you're really unlucky. So don't worry too much about it.
Like any fanbase, the Undertale one has its pros and cons, whether it is the old fanbase (which is the only one talked about in this video) or the current one.
And in all honesty, I could talk about the problems of the current fanbase, but:
-It's still ongoing, so it could lead to very heated arguments
-After an hour of writing this comment, I'm getting quite lazy
That comment started as just me wanting to share a few facts.

@@medibirb6912 I was somewhat in the Roblox community but never really took part in anything other than to see drama let's just say, I was somewhat in the fnf community for the same reason which was obviously a dumpster fire and existed in 2021 I think, and the last one fnaf for the same reason but another was bc I wanted to see actual good fan games for fnaf. Overall all those were named at the top of my head I have seen glimpses of others.
Undertale community I have never really been in but seen some things I don't wanna see. (Yes ik some things in the Undertale community and others aren't all bad)

the old undertale community was MESSED up, giving my opinions on some stuff too, since the earliest I could remember of me being in the UT fandom was like 2018.
I used to watch pj daycare. But the only reason I kept going was because I was a suicidal child with no idea how to vent it other than projecting my feelings onto little error.
