- This is footage from 1969 when the Army Core Of Engineers dammed the water so they could inspect and fix erosion issues. This footage is the only known video of the falls when they stopped.
I don't know what's more amazing. The fact that they could stop the water flow OR that in 1969 there was only one camera that recorded it! Like Come On!! The big rage back then was the 16mm movie camera, they were not that rare!!
+Burt Ham Yes, you would think there would be better footage!
I was 10 years old when my neighbor Mr Konan, took me up in his plane to see this. I lived in Rochester New York. Mr Konan if you read this, respond. It was a amazing sight!!!
I lived in Lewiston and toured this site in 1969 with a foreman for the Elia company that was doing the work. I took seven rolls of 8mm film of the site both on top and down below, but the films have been lost during several moves. They put markers into the rock so they could determine erosion without a shutdown. The debris under the falls was fascinating.
I would have expected that some TV stations (or networks) would have footage of this. Is there really nothing out there?
From the Falls but live in Florida since retiring from the Navy in 1988, was in a Navy school at the time and was unable to get home to witness it, sorry that I missed it.
It was also amazing to see them remove the coffer dam and watch the Niagara gush over the the American side again.
It was some erosion stoppage project. It's the only time ever that the American side of the falls was dammed.
I don't know who came up with the June 1969 date. I moved to Syracuse in Sept 1969 and the falls was not shut off in 1969, it was 1970. I walked on the river bottom when it was dammed.
They just turned her off again 10 years later.
3rd comment and awesome footage
