- Опубликовано: 12 июн 2024
- On June 28, 2023, I chased a supercell from southeast Wyoming to northeast Colorado alongside my fellow tour guides and guests on Extreme Tornado Tours Tour 7. We were able to document a beautiful, dusty tornado south of Kimball, NE, at very close range.
In this video, I'll provide some commentary over my raw chase footage from that day to give you some insight into our thought process with regard to targeting, positioning relative to the storm, and more, as well as a breakdown of some of the unique storm features and behaviors you'll see on your screen.
Thanks to fellow tour guide and storm chaser Stephen Jones for providing his footage of the Kimball tornado for use in this video.

Hey everybody, Trey he---WHOA there he is
Seriously though Trey, really gorgeous footage. So used to hearing you calm and collected but it’s very clear how excited you get about chasing, and showing others the beauty of severe weather. I wish I had the budget to take a tour!
Lol he did face reveal last year he just don't appear on camera often
In my opinion, this is the one of the best formats on the internet. Live vlogs are fun. The raw emotion and excitement is cool. But there is little to be learned other than the fact that storm chasing can be the most intense visceral experience in life. This format actually teaches while you still get the intensity.
Love this format, Trey. Hopefully you find this enjoyable enough to keep doing them
Thank you! This was an enjoyable video to make, and I have plenty of footage on the hard drives, so I’ll do some more of these in the future.
Great analysis, also definitely my favorite chase day from those tours. Hope you keep these up!
Thanks, Max!
@ConvectiveChronicles Here's a thought. I'm sure you have some duds on video, maybe you made some mistakes you wish you hadn't made...a lesson learned series would be a great way to use content you thought might never see the light of day.
add Trey to the Hall of Tornado Legends along with Reed, Skip and Hank
That's some incredible company; thank you!
Can't forget Daniel!
And Twistex
Agree! Especially in terms of his technical knowledge and ability to communicate complex concepts, Trey is unmatched.
Thank you so much! @@sallycoulter6535
Enjoyed the format as always, and I would love to see more of these videos in the future. I value your breakdown and it's nice to see a glimpse into the thought process and decision-making in a “real-time” post-commentary breakdown. Thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos and the wealth of knowledge you bring to this platform.
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Enjoyed. Every time I watch your videos, I learn something. Can't wait to see more chases! Thanks and safe chasing...
Thank you so much!
I enjoyed the new format, the audio quality is also very good this way.
Amazing footage from Kimball, NE tornado. I looking forward to more videos from storm chases in the future on this channel.
Thank you!
This channel is how I routinely unwind after work. I love it. Great job!
Thank you!
As a dad of four saving the money for these tours seems like a dream ATM. With that being said thank you for doing these videos. I want to chase and being able to gain as much info as possible in awesome. Thanks for knowledge and entertainment guys.
I could watch these all day!
Appreciate the quality camera work and expert commentary! Enjoyed the thunder.
Thank you!!
This is great! the chaser community needs more detailed breakdowns like this. keep it up :)
Thanks so much!
Let’s go Trey! Nice intercept!
Awesome! Always love when you experiment with new video ideas and formats. This type of educational storm chase vlog is especially appreciated as I continue to gain storm chasing experience this season.
Thank you! I’ve got plenty of footage on the hard drives, so if the response is generally positive as a whole, I’ll do some more of these
Love this content. As a skywarn spotter, its great to see and learn from pros like you! Thank you.
Thank you!
I was always fascinated by weather and tornadoes in particular. Loved watching storm chasing videos and following weather. But your videos have taken my knowledge of what’s really happening to a whole new level. Thank you for what you do
Thank you! Really happy to hear that!
Great video, Trey! I definitely think this is the best format for your chases. We get the best of both worlds: a bit of meteorology, and a bit of the real world. I will definitely watch every one of these you do in the future and I bet I'm not alone!
This was a real big boy tornado with all the dust it could kick up! Also just perfect that you got to be that close to something special out in the middle of nowhere where it can't hurt a soul. Great chase, and can't wait to see more!
Thank you so much! Agreed; always love seeing these beautiful tornadoes out in the middle of nowhere.
Keep it up trey, SOOOO close to 15k
I would love to do a tour one day!!
A day in the life with mister convective chronicles? Yes please. The video you made about chasing along the red river is probably one of my favorite videos you've uploaded. Something about picking a storm from the forecast and chasing it down and seeing it with your own eyes sounds so exciting to me. Great video. Per usual. 😁😁😁
Thank you so much! Since the response has been mostly positive, I’ll be doing some more of these (and the chase vlogs) in the future!
@ConvectiveChronicles You have very compelling evidence there that some tornados start at the ground and work their way up versus the opposite. Great catch.
This one of my favorite storm chasing vidoes. Love seeing more of the behind the scenes and post commentary. These are also nice veiwing during winter when i am dreaming of those spring storms.
Thank you so much!
Clearly seeing the strengthening tornado along with frequent CGs AND the clear slot and sunny skies further back west in your footage is exciting, Trey. Add to it your excellent commentary and the as-always fascinating, educational roundup, and this is an awesome upload. Thanks for all your work!
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Gonna tell you before watching all of it, but man any additional content of urs is always welcomed!
Thank you!!
Definitely like this style of video!
Thank you!
A welcome jump scare 😂 new favourite analysis!
Incredible video Trey! I love the video style and the in depth explanation of forecasting and thought processes that only retrospective voice over can provide. I hope to see more of these in the future! Those people definitely got their money's worth that day. When that thing really started ripping and the lightning activity picked, wow, what a scene!
Thanks so much! The guests definitely enjoyed that day; it had been a bit of a bumpy season for us, so to finish off with a bang like this was much-needed.
Well done... very well done. Damn. That was fascinating, informative, and fun. Thank you.
vs
Thank you so much!
Hey Trey, this is an outstanding format. It's great to see the meteorology, forecasting and design making in real time during a storm chase. Value added, I hope you have time to produce more of these.
Thank you so much!
That was awesome! Very cool to get the on the ground anatomy of a storm throughout the lifecycle of the tornado combined with the meteorology.
Thank you!
Excellent footage. I love that in addition to the "big one" you got to show your clients a couple what i call "pseudo-tornadoes" looked like small tornadoes to the untrained eye, but did not connect to the cloudbase and associsted meso, a brief tornado that didnt fully condensate but did have clear connection from ground-to-cloudbase with much more significant rotation at the surface compared to the "pseudo-tornadoes".
Thank you! You’ll often see a lot of those pseudo-tornadoes in and around these supercells, especially those that are outflow dominant.
Would love to see more of these. Subscribed.
Thank you!
Would love more of these!
More of these! I love the case studies too (please keep doing those) but this is really interesting. I love the window into what you do outside of RUclips, and this is more of a Pecos Hank vibe but without the snakes. Thank you!
Thank you! The response has been positive, so I’ll have some more of these in the future!
Trey you’re a legend
Keep doing these types of videos Trey! I absolutely loved this! You are amazing, and I appreciate what you do!
Thank you so much!
man thats some badass footage. would definitely like to see more of these!!!!!!
Thank you!!
Great video of a great chase! Some scary lightning with that storm...
Thank you! Those CGs were some of the closest and most intense I’ve experienced.
@@ConvectiveChronicles Scariest part of storm chasing IMO
I love this format! I've watched most of your videos, and this was definitely an exhilarating way to watch the chase and your thought process unfold. I'll often change the playback speed to 0.75 for a more mellow vibe if I'm winding down with a CC video. Always superb work!
Thank you so much!
Tremendous breakdown of this chase and event. I was chasing this day too and made very similar decisions as you and your tour did as well. I was not as close, but had a beautiful distant view of the entire tornado. Definitely one of my top chases! Great work as always, and would love to continue seeing these kinds of videos!
Thanks so much! Congrats on getting a view of this tornado; it was a good one!
The ayes have it. ✅
wow wow wow great footage
Excellent video!
Thank you!
Love this, Trey! Please do more of these!
Thank you!
Great Breakdown video Trey and amazing footage 😊
Thank you!
Loved every minute of it. I continue to learn so much. And watching the subtle formation of the vortex was interesting to see and helps me hone in my own skills for future adventures. Thanks again!
Thank you so much, Lori!
Absolutely fantastic video! Definitely a huge fan of this format.
Thank you so much!
Yes, I definitely like these kind of videos/anywhere I can learn anything is good / it’s interesting the dusty tornado, I guess Nebraska being a drier climate then Oklahoma, or at least central & eastern Oklahoma, where storms and tornadoes always seem to have a lot of rain with them/the three tornadoes that hit Tulsa on June 8, 1974 had tremendous flooding along with the storms because of all the rain/ Thanks for all the great work.
Thank you! Yeah, these dusty tornadoes are pretty common up in the High Plains where it's slightly more arid.
Other than your insightful, technical meteorlogical analyses to us avid viewers, great to see you taking folks on tours and getting some up close footage out in the field. Nice Trey!
Thank you!
Great format, looking forward to more of these!
Thank you!
Simply a beautiful tornado you and your tour group captured. You saw so many cool things in one day with a gustando in the beginning before the show started. I really love this type of video and I hope to see more in the ufture.
Thank you so much!
dont normally comment, but i love this kind of video and i cant wait for the next one. good stuff bossman
Thank you!!
Great video, Trey! Having not chased one of these high terrain, upslope-driven setups before, I found it very informative.
Thank you! These upslope setups are the bane of my chasing existence but we were able to execute well on this one.
Fantastic video Trey! As someone who has never chased irl or anything like it really enjoyed the commentary and breakdown as I've always struggled translating the visual to (albeit my personally relatively limited) storm structure knowledge
Thank you!
I really appreciate this format of video it was done well 👍
Thank you!
Love the video, thanks for taking the time to do it!
Thank you!
Trey, you’re too handsome to not have your face in your videos more often ❤I would love to see more of your chases and your thought process in your chasing decisions.
Haha thank you!
Really enjoyed this format and congrats on such a close intercept!
Thank you!
I would definitely be interested in seeing more of these. Analyzing a successful chase afterwards is fascinating. I'd also be interested in an analysis of a not-so-successful chase where all the ingredients were there, but the storm failed to produce. Maybe a side by side comparison, to try to figure out what ent "wrong".
awesome video trey well put together!! the commentary and thought process during your past chases are great for a all chasers to learn off and especially new chasers like me really some great information man keep it up!
Thank you so much!
Absolutely great video. I learned a lot while seeing some beautiful footage.
Thank you!
Very very cool!!
This is a GREAT idea-super informative and useful 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Thank you!
Yay I was waiting for these videos, honestly might start doing something similar on my chasing channel tbh
loved this video and enjoy you doing more of this!
Thank you!
I was 5 minutes behind that tornado. I left the storm near chugwater too late. That tornado was huge.
Dang!
You already know the person is a weather enthusiast if he has a tornado painting/poster on the wall
That’s one of my shots from the Dodge City KS tornado-fest in 2016…another of my favorite chases!
@@ConvectiveChronicles oh yeah!
That event was truly spectacular!
I absolutely enjoyed this video format, Trey. While there are alot of good storm chase videos out there, incorporating radar screenshots along with your studio voice-over explaining rationale rather than real-time on-scene windy background voice makes such a huge difference. I hope you make more of these. Bravo Zulu, friend!
Thank you so much!
Beautiful views and calm quiet narration. Thank you
This was a fun video - congrats on a successful tour day :) These are the fun tornadoes to see, no buildings or livestock lost, just open land. I hope your tour group has a safe and exciting year!
Thank you so much! Hopefully lots more of these open-field tornadoes this year!
Thanks
TREY THE GOAT
Amazing video Trey, and I loved the analysis! Definitely learned some things! I’m hoping to do a storm tour this May for my birthday and maybe catch my first tornado👀 that would be sick haha! Looking forward to more chase analysis!!
Thank you! Heck yeah, that'll be awesome if you're able to get on a tour!
18:13 interesting lightning bolt coming from the mesocyclone
I loved this, please do more! How does booking a tour work? Do y’all have a window of time where you’re active and people just book a date and hope for the best?
Thank you! We run 7 tours from April-June, each with their own set of dates (next year, we'll be doing 8 tours extending into July). The schedule for the following year comes out in February, so folks generally select a tour and book it then. Even if the weather ends up being a little stagnant during a tour, we have plenty of fun activities to fill the time until the pattern becomes active.
@@ConvectiveChronicles Wow, out of curiosity (I’m too much of a fraidy cat to actually do a tour 😅) I checked your bookings page and you’re sold out for this season and well on the way in next year’s! Congrats and continued success to you all.
Another event I have been reading about is the 1957 Ruskin Heights/Kansas City tornado outbreak/some of the photos are wild / 1957 must have been a busy year as there was the Dallas Texas April 2 tornado and constant heavy rain in Oklahoma caused the Arkansas river to flood at Tulsa several times (May, June, July ) prior to Keystone dam being completed in 1964 / Keep up the good work
Thank you! That was a big year weather-wise...that event is on my list.
A Smörgåsbord of storm features.
This was awesome! Definitely a new way to break down what you saw with your own eyes. Any way you can add in hodographs from the nearest area at the closest time to tornado genesis? Would be an awesome visual aid!
Thank you! Great idea, I’ll remember that for next time!
Tornado vs ICBM. ICBM wins....this time - stay tuned. 😉
Awesome chase footage as always.
Loved seeing the dusty ground circulation just become a giant monster.
Never really saw a condensation funnel. Amazing.
Hahaha thank you! This was one of those classic dusty tall tornadoes that happen often on the High Plains. Some of my favorite tornadoes to see up close!
Lovely video, were you guys out on 6/23? and if so, were you doing a video on it! Cheers, and thank you for the library of information you provide
Thanks so much! We were not; unfortunately, that was a guest arrival day for us.
That video wad AWESOME and so informative. Yall just about got stuck in a lightning barrage!
I understand an uptick in lightning is often a sign of increase intensity of the mesocyclone, but I've heard largely it is an uptick in positive lightning strikes before tornadogenesis. any thoughts on why?
Thanks again for the great video!
Thank you so much! That’s a great question; I’m not 100% sure how lightning works in supercells. I do know there’s been some conflicting evidence in that regard; sometimes the polarity change to mostly positive CGs happens and sometimes it doesn’t. Some studies have shown that the well-known lightning “jump” that occurs prior to tornadogenesis is mostly in negative flashes. So it’s tough to say; I think that’d be a great area for more research in the future.
Love this format.
Do these upslope flow type storms tend to weaken once they move away from the favorable terrain or that’s only needed for initiation?
Thank you! Generally, it helps with initiation and making the wind profile at least more favorable for tornadoes (the winds flip to easterly which can help increase surface vorticity and low level shear).
Great video, Trey. I have a question about the radar data. At around 9:19 a bowing line starts to eminate southwards from the area of the hook. Is this dust being carried off by the RFD making it visible to radar? The line appears to also constructively interact with the trailing cell.
Thank you! That is the outflow boundary emanating from these storms. These storms were outflow dominant for quite awhile, until the RFD production increased and was able to balance things out.
@@ConvectiveChronicles Awesome, it's an interesting feature. Appreciate the answer.
How long have you been chasing? I may have asked you that before and if so my apologies. And how many college hours did you take part in on your journey in learning meteorological science? Reason I ask is because I'm 45, will be 46 in November. I would like to have something besides my high school diploma to be proud of lol. I enjoyed watching this video and I'd definitely enjoy seeing alot more of these. I love watching Reed but he does this thing when recording himself driving and makes this "Blubluppluplu" sound every so often and it's just too hilarious! And I'm trying to learn something, got no time to be laughing 😂. Jk I love Reed Timmer, but if anyone watches his live chase situations, you'll know what I'm talking about. Have a good one!
Hahahahahaha I know exactly the sound you’re talking about! I first started chasing the monsoon in Arizona in 2011, and my first trip to the Plains was in 2015. As for college hours, it was a lot…4 full years at Arizona state and 3 for my graduate studies at OU. I do know that Penn State has an online Weather Forecasting Certificate that takes you through all the nuts and bolts of forecasting via a condensed college meteorology curriculum. It’s a really solid option if you don’t want to fully go back to college but still would like to partake in some additional, organized studies.
@@ConvectiveChronicles My cousin went to Arizona State back in the mid 2000's. She started at Bama, but moved to Phoenix where her mom is a secretary at a dentist office. I've checked the Penn State online degree out, and it seems to be the only one that could accommodate me. Yeah Reed Timmer seems like he would be a freakin blast to hang out with lol. Thanks for responding and keep up the great work.
Trey, how long from storm initiation to when it produced first tornado south of Bushnell?
It was about 3-4 hours
Hello, trey (voice) and actual trey
Your hanging picture is crooked 😆
I expected someone of your reputation to be a little... ...older...
