A true pioneer. Also one of the most beloved singers of all times. Many great songs. Linda Ronstadt covered this, a true honor, an incredible singer. On a sad note he Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in a small plane crash 2-3-59. RIP to all of you!!
Buddy was one of the pioneers of rock n roll. One of the firsts to produce and write his own music, also one of the first to use overdubbing, and The Crickets basically created the setup for the modern rock band with a rhythm guitar, bass and drums.
I was born in the same town as Buddy Holly, in Lubbock Tx! So blessed and honored to get to share that, and I love his music! Thank you for sharing this reaction, I loved it!
Buddy is a legend. He did a song in Elvis' Sun Records rockabilly style called "Rock Around With Ollie Vee." He made a huge impact for such a brief career in music...tragically dying at age 22. He was a huge influence on many acts, including The Beatles, The Hollies (who took his name), and Waylong Jennings. Waylon was playing bass for Buddy on his final tour. He almost ended up on that plane.
Dani, you got to go into the buddy Holly rabbit hole. Buddy met Elvis when Buddy had just started and Elvis told Buddy that your gonna be a big star or something along those lines. You could imagine how Buddy felt getting praise from Elvis. I can't wait till you get to Waylon Jennings thru Buddy. It's sad that there are only like 4 love performances that exist of Buddy. He left so much music behind though. You have Peggy Sue, Rave On, it's so easy, heartbeat, Ollie vie, Maybe baby, Words of love,True love ways, Crying, waiting hoping, Everyday, Oh Boy, Well... Alright, etc. He left so much behind in a short time. Buddy was starting to become a big-time producer by the time he died. He got married and moved to the village in NYC from Texas.. He parted ways with the Crickets. He was the first to add orchestras to rock and roll music. True Love ways was I believe his last hit song. It was doing well on the charts and that's what led buddy to start promoting it more. He was having financial problems and with the success of the song he chose to go back on tour. This is how Waylon Jennings came into the picture. He really agreed to that Winter tour party because he needed the money. So if you listen to True Love Ways, There's some backstory.
You should definitely try to watch The Buddy Holly Story starring Gary Busey from 1978. He does a masterful performance of Buddy and actually sings all the songs himself. Definitely worth checking out.
Thank you for this reaction to Buddy Holly. Don McLean was 13 years old delivering papers in his New Rochelle, NY neighborhood in February 1959. That’s when he saw the headline that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper, had been killed in a plane crash. At that time, Don McLean was a huge fan of Buddy Holly and it hit him hard. This is according to interviews that he has given. He said he went to school and mentioned to the other kids about what had happened and nobody seemed to care. But he cared. It stayed with him for years and 12 years later he wrote the first verse to American Pie that was in reference to that day when his idol died. Buddy’s song, That’ll Be The Day That I Die, is a direct reference to the American Pie chorus where Don sings “Bye-bye Miss American Pie, drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry, and good old boys drinking whiskey and rye, singing this will be the day that I die.” By all means, please react to more Buddy Holly songs. But I am also asking you to react to American Pie by Don McLean. It was voted by the Recording industry Association of America, as one of the top five songs of the century. #1 is Over the Rainbow composed by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg, #2 is White Christmas composed by Irving Berlin, #3 is This Land is Your Land composed by Woody Guthrie; #4 is Respect composed by Otis Redding, #5 is American Pie composed by Don McLean. American Pie is an iconic song. The studio version is great, however, since Don McLean is a wonderful performer on stage with just his guitar, I highly recommend the 1972 live version at the BBC. He was 27 years old. Here’s the link: ruclips.net/video/RciM7P9K3FA/видео.html
Buddy was so far ahead of his time musically. It’s taking all this time to just catch up to what he did.Nuff said. :) please, listen to his song “Not Fade Away”
Buddy had some great nuance and finesse in his vocals that these abreviated, crude live performances don't really capture. You should really check out his studio recordings.
Dani, so glad you chose Buddy Holly to react to. Good job. There is a film called The Buddy Holly Story, that I think you would enjoy. It has a number of his songs in it. He was taken from us much to young and at the beginning of a promising career. 👏🇨🇦😎
HEY DANI , UNCLE J-MAN HERE YOU KNIW I LOVE THE OKDIES ITS A SHAME ALL THE TALENT THAT WAS LOST IN THAT PLANE CRASH. BUDDY BOLLY, THE BIG BOBBER, RICHIE VALANCE ALL R.I.P.
When you listen to Don McClean sing "American Pie" the last line of the chorus repeats "This will be the day that I die" . A dead giveaway about the meaning of "The Day the Music Died"
Wow yep you really need to understand how important he was…..Buddy & The Crickets set the Template for the “Rock Band”……they influenced The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings & so many more……and my Aunt (my Mom’s sister) went to Lubbock High School with Him….she was a year younger & actually was the same age as his drummer J.I. Allison…..You might want to try “Rave On”…… I live in Mississippi now but I’m still a Texan every day of the year!!! Thanks for Reviewing Buddy 🔥🔥🎸✌️✌️
!st concert I ever went to, but never saw. LOL my older cousin who was just our of high school and I was in the 1st grade. Her and a friend took me along. She lived with us and my mom worked nights, and my cousin watched me. They bought me a coke and a bag of chips and left me in the car. It was an outdoor concert so I heard it all!! Still remember that!!
I love Buddy Holly. Still have the original vinyl album with this on it (and many other hits by him) that I bought in 1959. The record company rushed the album out within a few months of his tragic death. It was essentially a greatest hit's album titled "The Buddy Holly Story" and the reverse side of the cover had an abbreviated biography and told about the tragic plane crash that ended his life that year.
buddy was so influential, if he had not been taken so young, he would be up there with elvis, peggy sue, was one of his best known songs, but theres many more
Yes hello it's me again hey there yep everybody knows Buddy Holly he's like Elvis everybody knows him better in another Zone time the things you couldn't do back then that you could do now or lot different anyhow going to see my friend tomorrow Elvis help me out with my car tires and yes I know how I liked it God bless you and your family from Canada Toronto Scarborough Ontario Carl Supertramp Garnett God bless
Dani you have to expect snow if you live in New York and New York City. That was one of the reasons I gave up over the road 48 states truck driving. But that was back when I was in my 40s and It didn't hit me as bad then but I wouldn't care for it today. Anyway I decided to listen to you and watch your react to singer I never really got into either Mr Buddy Holly.
Dani you ARE an old soul and you would have fit better being born in the 50's like myself. Most people prefer the music they grew up with while you prefer music before your time and I love that. I hope you will react soon to Eva Cassidy's version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".
It's a good version, but they cut out a verse, probably for time. Before the final refrain should've been the following verse: "When Cupid shot this dart He shot it at your heart So if we ever part Then I'll leave you You sit and hold me And you tell me boldly That someday Well, I'll be through"
Hmm. A four member band with A singer playing lead guitar, Another playing rhythm guitar, a bass and a drummer. Sounds like it might be a template for rock ‘n’ roll bands! The Beatles, chose their name because of the “crickets“ because it had a double meaning to an English person, it was a game and an insect. Beetles were an insect and then there was the beat generation. As for Buddy Holly and The Crickets for me their most influential song may be “Not Fade Away.” This song has a beat that is just a little bit off that I think totally influenced The Beatles! I would love to hear your reaction to that song next!
Next week will mark the 63rd anniversary of the untimely deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper in a plane crash in Iowa. The Day the Music Died.
I look and watch this performance of Buddy Holly and It was a good song he sang. But I think he would've been a passer by nite and probably over before you know it. I don't see him being up there in the same height of fame and glory as what Elvis reached. He was the cut between Frank Sinatra and Perry Como. That's why it was said before Elvis there was really nothing. But Mr. Holly was a good singer. Don't get me wrong. Yet it's hard to really say as unfortunately he died in that horrible plain crash with Frankie Valens and Big Bopper I think. Very sad.
I forgot that one on my buddy list Song always goes blank when I think of his songs. Don ask me why. My love bigger than a Cadillac... Such great verses and catchy melodies and choruses. So ahead of his time. A true musical genius.
Buddy Holly... one of the greats. He was on his way to becoming a great studio producer.
A true pioneer. Also one of the most beloved singers of all times. Many great songs. Linda Ronstadt covered this, a true honor, an incredible singer. On a sad note he Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in a small plane crash 2-3-59. RIP to all of you!!

Same here! And then I ended up moving here in my 20s and been here since. I'm 45 now.
The Buddy Holly Story starring Gary Busey was a great movie. 1978 movie, I think he was nominated for the Oscar.

It's freezing here in Colo too... keep warm. Buddy in the short while we had him influenced so many who came after.. from the Beatles onward
Dani, I am with you regarding the weather. It is not so bad here now, but last week we hit -37C (-34.5F). That's enough winter for me, thank you!!!
