  • Maya Harrison, a senior at La Costa Canyon High School, is originally from an impoverished town in Guerrero, Mexico. After witnessing the scarcity of medical resources in her hometown, she became passionate about providing medical care in impoverished countries. Maya facilitated many community service drives and humanitarian efforts. Her aspiration of becoming a traveling physician stems from her societal obligation to help families like hers in developing countries.
From her unique cultural background of living with her family in rural Mexico, she witnessed the suffrage and hardship poverty first hand. She emphasizes that, as a society, we need to evolve from the conception of survival fittest and superiority, acknowledging the benefit of servitude and the importance of giving back to the community. She incorporates her passion for science and anthropology to explain how human beings are social creatures and are genetically built to be kind; that servitude and giving back to the community is one of the most important things a society can do to not only survive, but to thrive. Led by her career aspirations to become an MD to give medical care to developing countries around the world, she hopes that everyone realize that we each have the potential to impact change and transform our communities, countries, and the world.
