Claudius has a heart, but doesn't have a strong stage presence. Caligula has a strong stage presence, but no heart. I guess it only makes sense the Caligula became emperor first, but Claudius outlasted him.
"I said it was a shame, didn't I?" John Hurt is brilliant as Caligula. He has this enjoyable flair of lunacy.
John Hurt was always brilliant, one of my favourite actors ever.
The subtle wit in this is brilliant. Great BBC program. And John Hurt plays slimy Caligula so well .
We will never see acting of this calibre again... Two great, iconic performances.
