I watched this entire video thinking this was gonna be a demo of an AI. It's literally a scritped prop. It seems like something you'd see at a kids party.
what if... at the end... marco pulled his face off and he was a robot too? now that would have been cool. You would have realized the whole time that you were watching two robots interacting... not a human and a robot. Mind. Blown.
***** The question you have to ask is: How many videos on RUclips get 25% dislikes? Probably the bottom 10 percentile. It's an okay video, but the title hyped it up to be the "best demo ever". It's fucking 2015 and we have a slab in our pocket who can understand us perfectly when we say "Find me the nearest Italian restaurant". There's an AI that can perform better than doctors at diagnosing diseases, and another one that can automatically label objects in pictures and describe them in language, without any metadata. Gimicks like the ones presented in this video are basically just animatronics, technology from the 50's.
Well said. Not only is this too trivial for a TED audience, it also capitalizes on the TED name to get us to watch it, with higher expectations than it deserves.
Maybe the wrong audience decided to click on this video. Ever think of that? If YOU are part of the wrong audience, GO AWAY. The right audience will find it.
smug is right, titling a video "Maybe the best robot demo ever" when it isnt even a robot demo. It is just a choregraphed performance, a program the runs and has been practiced so the human does exactly his part at the right time, then the robot does what he was programmed to do. Absolutely ZERO interaction with this robot. No AI at all. Pretty lame actually, and more a fraud and con then robotics
+thevancouverguy We have made a lot progress with this particular brand of robot. Yes we programmed this particular one to "put on a show" for demonstartion purposes, but these AI beings do react to the environment, they learn, retain info, remember a person by face, voice, and two of our newer models can even identify you by your smell. That's right. your smell. So... while you troll on youtube in your parents basement, We are making Millions, with 100 percent satisfied customers. So go drive your Pinto to your Gas station job, and leave the intelligence to us smart people. I will think of you, when I go home to my robot, In my big house, with my success. thevancouverguy the title did not claim to be an ai robot what it says is robot and this machine is at its roots a robot. The first robots were programmed to preform specific actions. This was meant - from what I can tell - to be like a history of robots and to show you what the original demonstrations would have been like.
I don't think people understand the point of this TED Talk. This wasn't really about the robot as much as it was about what he was saying. TED Talks have always been about great ideas, and thats exactly what Tempest has done here.
the thing is that a simple student with arduino can do the same, only difference being the budget and a group of people to work on a more refined presentation.. Ted talks just keep losing credibility with this
What's new is that to program it, you just have to place his hands for him to learn something, and he also can work in team with human directly. You should search about it (also only 22000 dollars !)

Also we didn't have youtube 20 years ago, so I don't see how we could of done this 20 years ago.
Good point. ASIMO does have the ability to climb up stairs, hop on one foot, etc. And of course the low battery thing happened possibly only one time and possibly a mistake or it didn't have the battery power to last. Besides, it was dumb, ASIMO should be known as an innovative robot and an step up to modern technology. Also, letting a device fall down stairs could be useful to test for shock absorbency and how it can protect itself if it is on low power to prevent damage.

You do not make the public more comfortable around robots by giving it cute gimmicks that imitate a personality. The performer thought he could make his words self-demonstrating via his act, but the tech savvy people would rather cut straight to the technical functionality, and the laymen will have no choice but to accept robots for what they end up being, as long as they are of genuine help. Trying to make humans relate to robots before they posess qualities that are genuinely relatable is only going to make them as obnoxious as the Microsoft Office paperclip assistant. This was fairly embarrassing... This same exact demo could have been performed at Epcot in the early 80's. There are vastly more interesting things being done with robotics and AI these days.
A scripted magic show which contains very little essence and practically no point. If the purpose of the presentation was to demonstrate robotic perception and ability to react to changes in the environment, it has failed miserably. Not to say that interactivity wasn't there, just that it didn't matter at all. Everything looked 100% choreographed, and similar automaton without any sensors and no ability to interact would do as well. I was waiting until the last moment for the robot to "break the script" and do at least something interactive. No such luck. Great for a kindergarten party, terrible for TED.
TinyShaman is one of the FAILED invention of our robotics commentation award school congreiation He fails to understand everything he hear and has failed to listen properly he had a malfunction on his plastic micro chip that made him so aggressive. NEXT TIME LET US MAKE BETTER HUMANS!
On a literall point from what i meant is you just dont listen. Explanation: They are not doing a robo demo which is a mistake of the one who uploaded this. It is a DISCUSSION and im in there (hopefully XD) They talk about what kind of robot they must make and what possibilities of it would do. They meant that we must not make robot for war but for peace and love!
Everyone hating on this video saying it is fake, preprogrammed, etc. maybe. But the point was in what he said. Most of you probably don’t even know how much time and effort it actually takes to program one six axis robot arm, let alone two seven axis arms to act independently but together. Also there were sensors on it, so it did react to the speaker, but not as much as implied. But look at the amount of effort he went through, and just realize... there is more than meets the eye
Mikadie Joyce - Bates yeah and I can’t fly an airplane either but if all someone did was sing to me while driving around the runway while I was promised to be flown around the world I would still have the right to be at least a tiny bit ticked. We were promised a robotics demo not a magic show and history of the word ‘robot’ just to pad for time for the fact he truly has nothing to show for it. And if what some of the other comments are saying are true, the robot isn’t even that impressive, and was even built with unreliable and cheap equipment.
It makes people "nervous" that you can't read a machine's intentions? Really? I've never in my life been able to read another humans intentions, and I've never been "nervous".
Obi-Wan Kenobi Ok, 1) please use paragraphs so I don't have to read a wall of text that I keep losing my place in. 2) You're assuming that I don't have any kind of mental disabilities. I've never been able to reliably tell if someone is gonna flip out over the weather.
+Noah Williams Well i think that my assumption was a safe one seeing as how most people don't have disabilities that inhibit their ability to read others emotions. As a rule people have a hard time trusting things that they find unpredictable. just because you are an exception to that rule doesn't mean that rule doesn't exist.
Obi-Wan Kenobi No, as a rule people don't trust what they see as different. Fact: most schizophrenics that have been in a gun-related incident were the ones being shot, not the ones doing the shooting. This whole "It's different and therefore bad" mentality has to be eliminated if we are to move forward.
+Noah Williams "No, as a rule people don't trust what they see as different." This was said as if you were trying to counter my argument but it only reiterated it. "Fact: most schizophrenics that have been in a gun-related incident were the ones being shot, not the ones doing the shooting." And this was said as if you were trying to refute my point but it only illustrates it.
The annoying thing about this video was just how he pretended that the robot responded to his behavior, and wasn't just following a preprogrammed routine. Like watching an overly enthusiastic magician perform a very weak trick that everyone figured out. I know he just sort of played along, like an act, but it was done in a way that dumbed down the audience IMO. Not really appropriate for TED, especially not with the title "maybe the best robot demo ever". I got kind of disappointed, I expected to be something incredible since I often get 'wow!ed' by some of the stuff and research the TED talker's are presenting. I feel like this was the sort of stuff I would see if I turned on America's got Talent, and maybe it would pass to the next round but then get kicked because there wasn't really much else to it. :'(
The mistake is the title of the video and not the video itself. In the original video this is a TED DISCUSSION and not a ROBOT DEMO PRESENTATION. If youd want to know the real meaning of this comment listen and understand what they say carefully than just commenting in here do some typing with hateful comments that made some intelligent people mad and make hate comments about your comments that the one who commented this is not really intelligent.
Everybody's like "pfft. so choreographed", but I am like read the descriptions: Marco Tempest uses charming stagecraft to demo EDI, the multi-purpose robot designed to work very closely with humans. Less a magic trick than an intricately choreographed performance, Tempest shows off the robot's sensing technology, safety features and strength, and makes the case for a closer human-robot relationship. (Okay, there's a little magic, too.)
it was mentioned that it was choreographed. i think people actually expected a "best robot" that would meet their expectations that they made without reading the description.
peterpiperdiedharper It doesn't matter if it was mentioned or not. Any kid can program the same scripted sequence. People are annoyed by the fact how unoriginal and useless this is given it was titled as the best demo ever. It turned out to be just nothing.
peterpiperdiedharper not exactly, I have seen a lot of poor performances on TED, that's not the point. The thing is that it could be done like 30 years ago. It is not contemporary robotechnics. And if he wanted to really present something new, he could have just shown some realistic and random things the robot can do. I would be blown away easily if he showed the same things but done in real time. If the robot is capable of doing them why the hell wouldn't you want to show them? You know what I mean? For example he stands in front of the robot and moves hands, the robot responds, then he stands in the same spot and robot does nothing. Or he speaks to it and it responds, the next minute it doesn't. How do his sensors work? How does it operate in general? Wouldn't you prefer this demo rather than the one in the video? Be honest with me.
Seriously? The arms look completely unnatural like an industrial robot and it couldn't even move around on the stage freely. Also there was no way to tell what was actually an ai reaction and what was simply programmed scripted actions or remote controlled. Not impressive at all
***** No criticism allowed? I see. Well as a matter of fact I thought it was not very impressive or enjoyable to watch and not really fun either. I'm used to a higher standard from ted
***** Well the trick with the hat was not bad, I'll give him that. But this was more supposed to be about the robot and in that sense I've seen more impressive machines
It is an industrial robot! It's not made to look like a human. It uses learning algorithms so you can teach it various types of repetitive tasks, while still being able to interact safely with humans.
haiggoh This type of robot is a step in many to take. These types of robots will be used in workplaces where it would be hazardous for humans. But also it will be used to free up bottle necks in production.
The title is extremely misleading. I hope people realize this robot is nothing like what it seems to present. State of the art robots interact with their environment in real time. This robot did none of that. It was simply preprogrammed like the robots from decades ago. "Best"? Hardly. Even the experimental robotic arm that plays ping pong is many orders of magnitude more sophisticated.

TinyShaman is one of the FAILED invention of our robotics commentation award school congreiation
He fails to understand everything he hear and has failed to listen properly he had a malfunction on his plastic micro chip that made him so aggressive. NEXT TIME LET US MAKE BETTER HUMANS!
On a literall point from what i meant is you just dont listen.
Explanation:
They are not doing a robo demo which is a mistake of the one who uploaded this.
It is a DISCUSSION and im in there (hopefully XD)
They talk about what kind of robot they must make and what possibilities of it would do. They meant that we must not make robot for war but for peace and love!
So every people who liked this is also like TinyShaman who is a FAILED creation by his creators.
Asriel Dreemurr oh god an undertale fan
at least he did a show you didn't even go to ted ed to give a speech so appreciate his efforts.
Nothing about it's own capabilities. Just an elementary level "magic" show. Yawn
stop being so negative and acting cool, i bet you couldnt program a robot for your life.
Jacob C that’s a fair point
Mikadie Joyce - Bates thanks and sorry for some typos I went and fixed them.
Absolutely phenomenal
3:39 you can see the orange in his hand
That was absolutely fantastic
I don't see anything special here. Just a sequence of preprogrammed actions, boring and useless.
Too true...
This guy took a car manufacturing robot and put it in a magic show.
A paintjob and decorations,
Omega flowey!
nopenopenope
Just the thought of a robot behaving like a human is terrifying.
It makes people "nervous" that you can't read a machine's intentions? Really? I've never in my life been able to read another humans intentions, and I've never been "nervous".
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Ok, 1) please use paragraphs so I don't have to read a wall of text that I keep losing my place in.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
No, as a rule people don't trust what they see as different. Fact: most schizophrenics that have been in a gun-related incident were the ones being shot, not the ones doing the shooting.
This whole "It's different and therefore bad" mentality has to be eliminated if we are to move forward.
+Noah Williams
"No, as a rule people don't trust what they see as different."
This was said as if you were trying to counter my argument but it only reiterated it.
"Fact: most schizophrenics that have been in a gun-related incident were the ones being shot, not the ones doing the shooting."
And this was said as if you were trying to refute my point but it only illustrates it.
lenin1928
Except plenty of people do trust me.
"The perfect robot will be indistinguishable from us"
We're on the Megaman robotics timeline everyone, brace yourselves for the elf wars
I thought he was going to introduce a new robot...
me too, kind of disappointed
who is your audience - 5 year old
This dude invented the worlds first short bus robot.
Using a 100% pre-programmed robot with zero intelligence to talk about how smart they are and have become... wat
5:50 i can see yellow ball, hole infront of that hat hahaha
Glad my recommendation sent this to me 4 YEARS too late
Whatever the robot would have been. People would still thought it was pre programmed.
It’s amazing how far we’ve come in just 6 years. This looks so ancient, kinda like “Robby the Robot” on Lost in Space TV show.
Can you suggest me some newer robots videos please.
Sure, NP. Try this one, ruclips.net/video/rVlhMGQgDkY/видео.html
For a killer robot, his face looks like a Disney character.
Asimo the robot made by Honda is the best by far, this is choreographed, Asimo has much more autonomy.
not true, Asimo is choreographed as hell and it has almost no autonomy
Nao is better and sweater then Asimo.
This is actually the most Advanced robot I’ve ever seen!
Gacha Galaxy Than you need to get out more, there and plenty of robots that would send this guy to the trash compactor!
“The illusion of trust”
Great show! Thanks Marco. 😃
*_I WAS SO TRIGGERED WHEN YOU TOOK HIS HAT_*
it is the most beautiful act i see!
L. Priebe
DONT BLAME TED BLAME THE ONE WHO UPLOADED THIS
The mistake is the title of the video and not the video itself.
Anton Åberg your just the one whos really annoying
I don't understand why ppl are so salty. This is one of the best TED talks
When they hold gun blast 😂
Great demo..thank you for sharing.
“Illusion of trust”
Thousands thumbs up for this video. Very entertaining. It also change my point of view about few concept. Thanx and Keep it up.
Everybody's like "pfft. so choreographed", but I am like read the descriptions:
Marco Tempest uses charming stagecraft to demo EDI, the multi-purpose robot designed to work very closely with humans. Less a magic trick than an intricately choreographed performance, Tempest shows off the robot's sensing technology, safety features and strength, and makes the case for a closer human-robot relationship. (Okay, there's a little magic, too.)
well, you see, he destroyed it by staging the whole thing. it would have been far more impressive if he did just one random thing.
it was mentioned that it was choreographed. i think people actually expected a "best robot" that would meet their expectations that they made without reading the description.
peterpiperdiedharper It doesn't matter if it was mentioned or not. Any kid can program the same scripted sequence. People are annoyed by the fact how unoriginal and useless this is given it was titled as the best demo ever. It turned out to be just nothing.
yea, i see. given that it's from TED one kinda expects to be blown away because of so many awesome videos that are in this channel.
peterpiperdiedharper not exactly, I have seen a lot of poor performances on TED, that's not the point.
I feel like this is something from a kid's show.
Great entertainment for a 5 year old. Next see Micky and friends at ten.
This was obviously staged... But still cool to watch!
+Adrian Romoff He admitted it himself it was staged. You smartass.
I thought it was not staged.
It wasn't real?
Does anyone know what company that made the robot?
Either way It would be super cool to have one
haiggoh
This type of robot is a step in many to take. These types of robots will be used in workplaces where it would be hazardous for humans.
But also it will be used to free up bottle necks in production.
What's the song at the end called?
5:51 u can see a yellow thing
How du you make the part of any shape you want?
Video title: "Maybe the best robot demo ever"
Should be: "Probably the lamest robot demo ever"
Right smartass go and do something that's better
This was sooo cool!
That is not the point of the tedtalk though. I guess you can say the title is quite misleading
How beautifully it was presented
MARVELOUS
1:05 thats not how you pronounce it... i know its hard to pronounce czech words, but even google translator gets it right.
Actually the word "Robota" is polish.
@@mug8917 really? And how about Russian language? 🧐
Mug Man probably both Czech and Polish, but the guy who coined it was Czech
Can someone at least please tell me the name of the music that is played at the end? It’s so catchy
Yawn, scripted, programmed, and fake. Too big and too boring, it belongs in an elementary school not in a social place. Bad presentation.
any robot will be programmed.
Do it better, then.
찐
stupid
Its absolutely great work
Um, yeah... Nice show but... it's just running a program.
OH NO! ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE DOESN'T EXIST YET! SOMEONE CALL NASA!
This is VERY VERY VERY well done, really...
3:38 you can see the yellow ball hidden in his other hand if you look closely
(still an impressive demonstration though)
Yes Man from New Vegas was so popular they made him into a real thing.
Yes, finally a fellow being of culture.
I am watching in 2019
