The electric skateboard that moves like a snowboard (Summerboard review)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 июл 2024
- The Summerboard SBX is unlike any other electric skateboard. It has two motorized caster wheels underneath that allow you to shred the streets as if you were snowboarding. CNET’s Logan Moy spent a few weeks learning to ride so he could figure out who the Summerboard is for.

Stop promoting this bs, they ripped off freebords by just adding a motor. Why they keep changing their name over the years.
@@Red1676 is that not what happened for skateboarding and then electric skateboarding? then again for freeboards and electric. Not arguing at all that aaron did not rip off the bindings shamelessly and other details. Only that that is exactly what happened with skateboarding and nobody cares. Freebord mfg does not care about the electric boards, those people left when the company went under.
As someone who knows how to snowboard, how useful is Summerboard it training someone to snowboard the first time, off-season?
Is it really like snowboarding, or just it just kind of resemble snowboarding but it’s a totally Different animal?
@@frankmignone2271 Maneuvering is remarkably similar to snowboarding but I wouldn’t recommend it for learning to snowboard. It hurts a lot more to fall on asphalt than snow.
@@LoganMoy Is it good for everyday commute ?
Bro when that board tried to escape 😂😂😂😂🤣
you have to have them turned on for the BMS to accept charge. other boards use separate circuit for charge.
I'm glad they left that in there 🤣
it's been a long time since the last time i saw a new type of board a thought "whoa that's actually so cool"
It's not new design expect for motor on it .
It's not anything new, they ripped off the design from freebords by just adding a motor. Freebord has been around for a long time and actually got popular in the early 2000s, then these chodes slapped a motor on it and backpacked off the freebord hype
@@Red1676 some people want a motorised Snowboard. Are you mad that these guys did what freebord didn't?
@@danbob1650 and even that isn’t new. Leiftech did this years ago.
@@ShinKais3r I think some credit is due / some acknowledgement that the design existed. We don't call electric longboards "autumnboards" because they are electric longboards. This is an electric freebord.
40 years of board sports and I still skate, surf & ride the mountains of beautiful BC. This looks like a risky ride and something a dentist would design lol 😂
💯 dentist or orthopedist. In learning to snowboard I caught an edge and did an unintentional 360 barrel roll…. would still be going thru skin grafts (decades later) if the hill was asphalt.
@@gr8dvd Wow! An unintentional 360 barrel roll?! You must be a pro
@@invisninja1566 "pro" …so my friends thought but truly unintentional as I readily admitted. It helped, no panic - go with it, to be on 2’ of new powder, a first (& last) for me. Anyway I appreciate the benefit of the doubt - you & friends. ;-)
🤙 you sound super tubular bruh..
Onewheel 🙌
I've been riding my summerboard for about 10 months now. This thing is the hardest board I've ever ridden. It takes time to get down, but once you do, it's one of the most fun you can have.
Did u snowboard before learning? Is it like that at all?
have you ridden a onewheel ?
Is it worth the $1600
I also wonder if you have rode a onewheel. I find once you find the groove a wheel feels alot like a snowboard. My pint carves a bit like this
Let us know if you've onewheeled please, lots of us OW addicts want a RTR friendly alternative
I would love to try this thing ! I love skateboarding and snowboarding but men, 1600 bucks is quite a lot. Won't be able to afford that unfortunately
@ive lost my mind does it make a difference to their comment ?
@ive lost my mind lol that’s not Golden Gate Bridge in my banner. That’s anos 20 bridge in Lisbon.
@you can call me ceaser I'm a man with pretty long hair. And they are even longer now as this pic is 3 years old.
Bro for 1600 you can by a used car.
@I'm not a normal everyone has their own way of themselves
That was a really solid video showing the initial experience. Would have very important for new buyer to touch on maintenance as that is the hardest part of owning the board after learning to ride it.
I'd imagine the outer wheels wear down quick. What else?
I was wondering how you get the belt that drives it replaced, once you try to do tricks it will probably get damaged.
You probably need some basic tools and access to their website.....
I could totally see riding this to get from point a to b. Props to putting your life on the line for the review ✌🏾🤙🏾
I've been snowboarding 15 yrs. I'd love to get one of these for the summer. keep me warmed up for the winter.
The learning curve on these is pretty high. I got to test one for an hour and was still barely carving properly.. but still getting there enough to feel some confidence and an honestly unique snowboard like experience.
FREEBORD is the original y'all just cattin'
I guess innovation is new to you.. things are built on previous things and improved on. The old blackberry isn't to be compared to a recently developed iPhone or a Pixel
@@natraniel - InNoVaTiOn, ever hear of it? For me it was the lack of respect or acknowledgment of the brand/individuals who paved the way for this product to be here. Although it was nice to see Freebord team riders and stickers in the intro of the video.
freebord looks cool and isn't out yet, and looks to serve a slightly different purpose. i think competition is healthy, and a motorized alternative is cool
@@certifedcupcake the freebord has been out for over ten years dude
Freebord almost killed me back in the day. Those things were dangerous af.
This is actually a proper good review much better than some of the others online. Cheers
Holy cow - catching an "edge" on that thing at speed could leave you eating from a straw for the rest of your life. Wear your protective equipment FOR SURE. Catching an edge on a snowboard is bad enough - the road will be COMPLETELY unforgiving, unlike snow - somewhat.
Underrated comment
I'm glad you left in the part where you hit the remote and the board flew off the table. Excellent acceleration + bonus laugh.😆
Whoa, Logan! Haven't seen or heard you since The Film Vault! Great review, thank you.
Nice concise review, fun and interesting. Overall great job. 👍
Bad company. Back before they rebranded to Summerboard, they were Leiftech. The boards were plagued with problems and they offloaded the costs onto the buyers. I won't support them now.
@@AV.36 Okay but what does that have to do with my comment? The guy's review was fun and interesting. That is all I said.
Thanks Saphen!
If I was a skateboard or snowboard rider, this would definitely be on my shortlist. The price is reasonable if compared to an electric bike. This seems like a new challenge and looks so much more fun than an electric bike or skateboard! Great review! Thank you!
If compared to an e-bike.. But you can't really compare these two. An e-bike is a legit means of transportation, while this e-board is great fun,but not really something to commute with.
Thanks god you are not a skateboard or snowboard rider...
Damn remember when Logan was behind the camera back on Tomorrow Daily! Great vid man!
I'm so glad I found this vid; kudos, Logan
This looks like so much fun…..and pain. I would love to try one of these.
Great review! Once you learn how to ride, this is without a doubt the BEST mode of transport from A to B! The maneuverability gives you so much agility and freedom.
haha good times watching your vids back in the day!
The Onewheel would like a word...
I did make a review video where I did a commute
@@maynarddrivesfast804 is that word "nosedive"? 😆
@@yeti_riding5612 I see you're familiar with them... lol
that 2 min blooper was one of the best reactions , i swear that wholesome laugh made this entire video a breeze and pleasure to walk through and listen to thanks ! ride safe brotha
I'd be curious to see your opinion of a OneWheel. It's super intuitive for me. Felt sketchy the first 20 minutes on one. But after that, I was relatively comfortable.
Good luck replacing the battery
@@thechineserussianthat’s the thing though, we almost never need to. I mean obviously SOME do, but the majority of us really don’t have to do any kind of maintenance, maybe ever. (Besides the tire.) I think the fastest forced maintenance would be changing the tire, which happens anywhere from 800-2500 miles, depending on your tire pressure and the tire’s softness. And the stock GT tire has been seen lasting until around 7,000 miles!🤯
omg this is something i want to try at some point in my life... i do some snowboarding during winter times and have some skateboarding experience and this looks fun AF
That jump scare was awesome!!!!!
So much fun! Can’t wait to try it
Great video! Interesting that it's like a hybrid workout, transport, skill-building kind of thing. Pretty $$$ though.
Yes pricey, but when comparing to actual snowboarding, its actually affordable. Avg board, bindings and boots run you $1k. And what about the lift ticket (~$100/day), transport cost to the mountain and accommodation for overnight stay?
A snowboard I bought a year old model board, bindings, and boots once since I finished growing at a swap meet for over half off. I buy a season pass in advance, since there’s no guarantee of good snow. I pay $300 for an unlimited early bird pass. Me and the homies rent a motel room for $30 a night, like $6 a person. Gas isn’t too bad either since I live close enough like 2 hours with traffic from my home resort. There’s also shuttles that run every weekend from my city. So snow sports don’t have to be cost prohibitive if you really budget it out and want to do it!
Oh yea...I'd rather do this than snowboard any day. Said no one ever.
Bro do a 1660 double cork on your summer board! Ok bro start the go pro!
Here lies dumass..
I totally agree! Sure snowboarding can be anywhere from $600 all in to $2000 or more, but that off season is ruff when you need a fix this could be a solid option. I used to shovel Zamboni snow at ice rinks to hit rails in June landing on pavement. I give them a ton of credit for the innovation and just trying to think different!
Price point is way to much for the boards quality. I sold mine due to all the issues. Sadly not worth it.
great video--well organized and shot!
I just got back from walking my dog and had met a guy who was riding one so I decided to check out a video on them. They look super cool!
Very impressive idea. Looks like fun!
Informative, to the point, and unbiased. Thank you
I just learned summerboard and it is really fun. I think the key to learning it is to ride it like a ripstik, balancing on the center wheels. Once you get used to that, the other skills like turning and sliding become much easier. It’s expensive but if you want an electric snowboard that you can ride anywhere, this is it. If you want a lower cost version , check out freebord which rides similarly but has no motor so you need to ride it downhill.
This is the best example I have heard. I just picked up the Summerboard today and have now put 10 miles on it. Balancing on the center two wheels to go straight is exactly the same on a ripstick.
Closest thing to the back to the future hoverboard as we're gonna get.
It actually really does feel a bit like it.
Awesome video bro 😎🤙🏼
Props for not editing out your mishap.
This is so cool. Thank you
Geez...I ride an esk8 and a onewheel...thanks CNET, now I need this board. 😍
OK, that was funny when he made it go while talking at the table.
It’s a e-freeboard, pretty cool!
Thank you for the video. I learnt that I better don't buy a summerboard. What is your suggestion to go from point A to B?
Great review... I was curious about this particular product, but not anymore.
I like your reviewing style. Curious if you have tried out a Onewheel? I see there are some haters below but I have found mine is a good mix between the fun flow of riding AND as an effective way to get around.
Agreed, the Onewheel XR is the best in terms of versatility. You can go on gravel, packed sand, grass, etc... Might not be the fastest, but honestly, if you are going faster than you can run out of, you're going to have a bad crash sooner or later. So the 16-19 mph of the Onewheel XR is right on target.
one wheels are trash, kinda like this thing
1:56 that scared the crap out of me. Lol 🤣
😭🤣🤣
Just saw two guys riding summerboards today around my neighborhood and it seemed like they were having a blast! If the board could get to the point where the skateboard wheels and trucks are no longer needed, it would look badass.
Facts, I imagine just 2 spheres instead of regular wheels, it’d look so futuristic
So a ripstick
The wheel if want it to expand or normal touch floor, maybe for the turnings, use bicycle suspension type, a small one? The front one? U know right?
Oh man that board takes electric skate to another level, imagine as the time passes it will hopefully get lighter and more tricks will be possible
Some1 just did the 1st backflip on 1 the other day so yes its getting more & more popular. I think I may get the base Model to start & see if I like it. You can always buy another battery for more range later on & 20MPH is plenty fast. I have a $4K Bajaboard but this look like more fun!! Only thing is mine is for off road also & has Wishbone Shocks! So 🔥
The only tech review I've seen with a jump scare thrown in 😁
“The controller is not to exciting”
The controller: “say no more fam” 1:55
4:20 it’s crazy to see the shadow of the selfie stick and not see the selfie stick itself! 😂😂😂
This is pretty cool. The only problem is see with it is how much wheel replacing you’ll do ,with all that gliding and sliding on your wheels.
Got the Phantom Electric Skateboard. Would love to try one of these. Looks the Business.💯🍻
Exactly what i have been wanting
1:55 That gave me a fright! I suddenly screamed "AAACK!" everybody in the room frantically asking "Why why why!?"
Darn it lol 😅🤣
Man electric skateboards already provide a snowboard feel of straight line.
Definitely want to get this board now to try carving
This is not carving, this is sliding turns.
@@James-pc2bz What is the difference? I thought both were conceptually the same? If this was done on a snowboard, you would 'carve' out a path, right?
@@scpdatabase969 carving is pencil thin precise turns. When someone carves your see very thin lines in the snow where they turned. Slide turns leave shaved trails
Love you approach
Do you think the summer board could work as a precursor to snowboarding?
Once I learned to carve I just started switching back and forth from regular to goofy foot over and over until doing a 360 wasn't really something I had to learn because I already could smoothly 180 and then just keep going around another 180. I wear skate pads when I ride because I'm old af.
Oh that's a great suggestion. That's how I learned to get comfortable on a snowboard so it makes a lot of sense!
How much road do you need for that? Hope it has breaking or you’ll be snowboarding rt out into traffic. Otherwise very cool just not a lot of trails big enough or roads (traffic etc.)
By the end of the year you've spent as much in wheeel replacements as the summerboard itself :D
Looks like great fun. A unique idea.
When he touched that remote tho 😂
My guess is it’s about learning the “edge” like all board sports. Ever wakesurf? Ever wakesurf on a skim board? The extra kicker though is also learning to modulate speed.
bingo.
That looks so cool.
Good work,so it was for recreation? Rather than a transportation tool, right?
Its basically what I wanted to design years ago when I had a freeboard (the original unpowered version). be interesting to know how they transfer the power though the castors to the motors...
battery>motor>wheels.
Probably brushes touching a copper disk or something because straight up[ wires would obviously not work lol
It seems like the alpha version of a really great idea. I think it will be a hard sell at that price because of the learning curve.
Takes devotion to ride these, and certainly to fix them when they stop.
@@quinnfoster4671 I never have to fix my sbx
@@yeti_riding5612 me neither because i don't have one lol
i imagine the plan is for early adopters to already be comfortable with snowboarding or skateboarding at moderate speeds. the trick for brand new riders will definitely be figuring out how to keep people from catching edges.
It looks like it really captures the snowboarding feel
I had a freeboard back in the day. It was not useful and only worked going downhill.
But this looks awesome!
It is, you would love it
Can the summerboard be used off road like dirt gravel grass terrains?
That's an awesome looking board!!!!!!
How would you compare this to the one wheel which is another device that's supposed to somewhat simulate snowboarding.
wow congrats aaron, great work summerboard guys, from a turtle.
You did earn that thumbs up!! 👍💪🙏
That's awesome I want one
All I can say is this looks SO FUN
1:55 one that I can photograph, which is also the same one that can get beat up while I learn how to use it
You could actually make a hockey league with these u created a sport 🙌🏿🙌🏿
✍️hockey stick remote
Gotcha
One Wheel's got a legit competitive product to compete with.
i've got most of the PEVs, imo the OW is the worst of them, it's a small underpowered uni. EUCs ate Future motions lunch a long time ago, and are the most practical, leiftech and summerboard are really differentiated and extremely fun, i think they will be a better competitor.
I am working on making parts that will convert a onewheel frame into an electric freeboard that fits summerboard casters or freebord for non electric riding. Using the aftermarket bumpers and Flightfins will make a dope board that onewheelers will want to make out of old ow rails and diy esk8 parts. I basically want to become an aftermarket parts supplier for the Summerboard but also have parts that let you diy a board more or less.
Snowboarding on the streets a Dream come true, no more traveling to snowy places!!!
If you do a boardslide with that the board will flex and the battery will break or fall off, right?
Man I am day 3 on a one wheel trying to get that down…this looks like a ton of fun but way more difficult than the Onewheel lol
I friggin love this
That looks fun!!!
It makes sense. In snowboarding. You best learn it in more steeper hill than not so steep. Not too much steep. It's just odd on the balance.
The one wheel pint is also a great option. Just don’t fall off
I second this
This is better
I love my pint, but yes when I ate it. It sucked for like 2 weeks
I ride my Pint rather aggressively, and falling can suck. Learn the limits of the board, and how to roll when you fall. It's seriously one of my favorite pastimes.
@@Ghostyfrost9688 doubt it. I’d like to see this on sand or dirt or grass or gravel
If this tech could make its way to a popsicle deck…being able to ride or flow in those ways, but still pop tricks after locking into a normal riding stance, would actually be game changing for real, although the wheel setup as is wouldn’t work well, it would have to be like a whole new setup based on this idea. Wild for sure.
I guess what I really am looking for is being able to drift/carve flat ground while not loosing speed(which means it would have to be powered somehow because physics doesn’t allow friction with no reduction in speed).
@@unquestionabletv a regular skateboard with special build castor wheels, replacing the entire truck system, could work. it would take a massive amount of getting used to but it seems doable.
I got to ask the question.....why did they keep the wheels standard shape instead of having the inside diameter being bigger so that when you bring two wheels down on one side it will get full traction instead of just the outside half of the wheels ?
prob standard long board wheels, which means there is already a huge market of hardness and wheel types you can play with.
You know you can also wear knee/elbow/wrist pads if you fall so many times...
Unless style matters more for you than your skin.
It does
i draw the line on anything more than a helmet.
my wrists and elbows are dust :(
Been sitting on buying one of these for years. Just might pull the trigger
Honestly I would go with a one wheel, same price, much bigger community, cooler look, all terrain, and so much more.
Do it! Nothing else compares to the shred you get with the SB
yeah definitely pull that string! the SBX scratches that shred itch like nothing else on the planet
SB is the best - - onewheel if you want a segway that goes sideways
Bro your laugh sounded like an electric motor on a drone for a second lol
Wouldn’t the outside wheels get uneven flat spots from sliding on the concrete
That’s great to see something new other than “New” “smartphones” everywhere!!!
anyone else feel like he looks like the guy from engineering explained in like 15 years lol
Can you really jump on these as well or not really? Will it damage those castors or otherwise in doing so? Given it's 3-4 times as heavy as a traditional skateboard I'm guessing you can't really Ollie on one very well?
LOVE THIS
I love the future... When your having trouble deciding between this, a One Wheel.. Or a electric unicycle... So many options!!! Just need more $$$
I like it. My problem is you should have worn knee and elbow guards. protection pushes you to learn faster. It goes fast. Make sure people watching know how to do it safe. They are not falling into snow. Cement is less forgiving.
People watching can decide for themselves?
that goes both ways. you can argue that protection makes you more reckless and will sustain more injuries.
most protection will prevent you from road rash and breaking bones, but they don't do much for in inner soft tissues.
EG - helmets will protect your skull, not your brain.
Great video
hey logan, do you mind sharing what kind of wristwatch you're wearing in this video? it looks great
In this video I'm wearing a Seiko SNZG15J1. Great, affordable field watch that I wear most days when I need to work with my hands.
