Dean. I love your speed of thought on these videos. You literally weigh up your diagnosis in 5 seconds, formulate your plan, immediately and then execute the plan at speed. There must be a description for your personality type. You brain is completely uncluttered by analysis. Consequently. As a viewer it’s very therapeutic watching your videos . As they are devoid of ambiguity or mental gymnastics. Just pure uncomplicated process with minimal commentary. I love the way you sling the fixed tool down on your bench once you are finished. Much the same as a gladiator in Ancient Rome would treat an opponent. Great videos. Keep them coming!
Thanks mate! Your video helped me see why my drill wasn't switching gears. I'd lost the little pins that hold the ring gear, and hadn't even noticed. I made some more and put it back together. Works like it's supposed to now. Much appreciated for unintentionally showing me the problem.
I found myself writing a sentence saying that "I can't believe someone would send in a drill in so many pieces"...... and then realised what I was saying!!! Of course people do things like that. It's probably healthier for the drill having a professional re assembling the carnage that was created. The thing I really can't believe is how few missing parts there were!! I've never seen the hammer selection side of the drill dismissed before. That was really cool to see. I am very, very, glad that the owner of that drill hasn't seen that part dismantled either..... that's enough to give you nightmares 😂😂😂 Very cool video, thanks 👍👍👍👍👍
I only use them, never taken one apart... That said, your years of experience shine through! Great video! And explaining all the little things really pulls it all together for a great video. Thanks for sharing and you've got a new subscriber... Have a great day! 😊
The Chuck on my DHP484 has been glued with high srength thread locker that I have to use the following items to remove it: Shaft bearing side: - impact grade E10 torx socket - 3/8 ratchet wrench + leverage pipe Chuck side: - impact grade 10mm allen key (biggest I can find, about 180mm long) And cleaned with maf cleaner then soaked with CRC lubricant before loosening it.
Tnx for this video! My unit does not go all the way when shifting from hammer to screw/drill. I will follow this video and see if I can see the issue. Tnx again!
Really nice video! I have problem with ball bearing inside gear box. Do you know the size of ball bearing? i wanna buy it before disambling the machine, because i am not as talented as you!
Can the unit be reassembled without the hammer function? I would prefer to retain the drill and use it as a simple drill driver. It seems so terrible to simply toss it in the bin and the cost of a new gear housing is basically the cost of a new tool. I appreciate any feedback.
@@emillundgaard4444 I was not able to get the thing apart, even after trying the various methods shown on youtube. The gear box was 80% the cost of a new drill in my area. I did end up with a new Makita drill as a holiday gift, but I have stuck with my decision to focus on Milwaukee branded tools.
@@m.j.9627 thanks for your reply. Actually tried removing the lower hammer piece myself, and assembled it without. The drill mode works now, so hopefully it will continue working 😄 I agree, Milwaukee really makes some nice tools.
Hello Dean. I hope you can give me a hint. A had same problem and I did the same. Took it apart and assembled back together, but now when i want to fasten a drill bit, I can't. It doesn't have that ratchet thingy. I don't know how to describe that, but I'm sure you know what I mean. Which part of the gearbox is responsible for that feature.
Dean I have a fairly new dhp487 brushless that’s stuck on hammer mode but you can select different modes Just staying on hammer all the time. Any ideas to help me out? Thanks in advance
😢wish you could do my DeWalt 796 drill that's also stuck on. Hammer mode have had the gearbox out cleaned and inspected but nothing Brocken followed part diagrams to rebuild it and still no matter were I set the color it hammers all the time
I had this problem eventually learned how the mechanism worked but I couldn't for the life of me figure out how it was sticking in hammer mode. I remember the bearing (that you pointed out as the problem) being questionable and now I know was the problem thanks to you, but don't understand how it keeps it in hammer mode. Wouldn't it prevent it from being in hammer mode if it's collapsed?
i have the same problem with dewalt dcd796, its always hammering but when i set it in other modes it hammers weaker, and if i get closer to hammering mode it hammers stronger and stronger untill i put it in dedicated hammering mode, could it be the same problem and if yes, is the disassembling proces the same or should i disassembling whoel gear box to access the problem ?
Thanks for posting this video. How did you do all that without a single swear word/bleep?? Mine intermittently sticks in hammer, but not in a rush to fix now seen the video, I can imagine losing a ball and swearing a lot. Interesting you used the Bosch to repair Makita. Buying Makita taught me a lesson... Don't!

Well i use the hammer drill function all the time on my drills, everyone does cause nobody likes grabbing a sds when you have to put in a bunch of small fasteners in brick. Wouldnt even buy one that doesnt have it.
Hello Sir mine 486 broke down because of brushless motor smells burnt after not only a month use Bought it in April 2022 at pro+olians marseille the guy told me one year warranty only is it true Where I can find a good brushless motor to repair it?

You know it'll be a fun day when it arrives in a plastic bag, don't you? 😂
I always appreciate how he remembers how to put tools back together.
@@jasonvandervalk3679 It is a marvel. One of those people who's been doing it for so long that it's become instinctual.
There is a drawing on the makita page... however not one of the gearbox itself, brutal.
Genius! Good job and good on ya for having scrap parts. Ironic the solution was going in from the other side to fix hammer
That was very good work to dump that from a bag and put it going again I was very impressed by that

Great work You have the knowledge and skill.Congratulations
Kinda like a jigsaw puzzle bagged on a Friday, no time for ALL the pieces… nice job!
Excellent tutorial thanks for sharing 👍
My pleasure
Intro looks like LEGO and Makita did collaboration. That or someone didnt had money for puzzles, so he used a power drill.
Don't be scared of a machine in pieces, they usually only fit together in one way.
Absolutely perfect thank you Dean 🙏🏼
That’s some bad bastard to send it in like that. The gearbox disassembled is just cruel!
Hi Mister what a pleasure it is to look at you working. Is there a tool that you don't know. Greetings from south Africa 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hola Dean, una pregunta todas esas herramientas las recoges de la basura? o te las traen para reparacion?
That hammer option is most useless anyway. Can do well without. Good video. I had one stucked of these and threw it to trash maybe fix next one :)
Absolute genius really enjoy your videos 👍👍
Hello very good video, What kind of grease are you using. Silicone?
Godbless
Great job Dean i would of done it slightly different by smashing it up and buy a other

I had the same question I may try taking it apart and seeing if it works that way
Did you find out if it worked?

Wow, awesome repair.
YES😂 A random bag of parts!!! 50% discount because half the work is already done ✔️ 😅
Would it work without the bearing and 'hammer' ring??

Ball bearing pushed the rattler in (he explains it around 12:15).
Any idea what the bearing is called?
Seems i need to try find one.

Well at least the battery is in one piece 😅
Did you reapplied the grease inside of the gearbox after the video or you left those 2 blobs on the brake pins?
The gear box takes very little grease. A little blob is all that it needs
makita drill DHP484 i would have sent it back in the carrier bag, with note saying You took it to bits u tix it and find missing parts.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💯💯💯💯💯💯👍🇧🇷🇧🇷
Thesame case with my makita DHP 484
