  • Martin Kemp is Professor Emeritus of Art History at the University of Oxford, and his book “Leonardo by Leonardo” presents a stunning gallery of the master’s paintings alongside Kemp’s own insights, as well as the reflections of Leonardo himself. Kemp sits with Walter Isaacson, who himself wrote a highly acclaimed biography of Leonardo, to compare notes about the great man.

“Leonardo by Leonardo” by Martin Kemp has the highest quality photos I’ve come across in a book featuring da Vinci’s paintings. Combined with Kemp’s outstanding knowledge of the Renaissance man extraordinaire, this handsome volume is a must-have for Leonardo aficionados.

Mr. Kemp explains enormous absurdities with a lot of class and persuasion. And to think that he is considered one of the greatest specialists of Leonardo da Vinci

Do a VR tour of Leonardo DaVinci's Paintings with his book being read. People that will never get to go there would love it.

Martin Kemp is 80 years old; why he thinks dying his hair so dark makes him look younger is beyond me. It just makes him look creepy.

This most excellent scholar brings Leonardo's Art more to our minds now that can get it: ie in identifying the Fibonacci sequence in nature and how mystically/scientifically that forms (Plato) are illusory (Buddhism; Quantum Physics.) My English AH teacher back in the 70's always pressed us to actively look, be engaged and alert when in front of a work of art. In Leonardo all things of mind and being come together. And he knew that 500 years ago. I say the same for 'Shakespeare' who i hold to be Sir Francis Bacon.

Just a small point, but Kemp says the cloth merchant's wife is looking at you [ the viewer ] ; for me she is looking to the viewer's right.

    Hello...Sir
Can you please let know whether Leonardo Da Vinci used to put signature or not.
It will be very helpful to me. And I have a painting done by him. It's a self portrait. Oil on board. Then I can send the image to you please.

Yeah that wasn’t really done at the time either. They didn’t really sign their work at that time.
Also the chances of having one of very few paintings done by the maestro are very slim.

this particular painting has been floating around for many years. I believe it was made by Bernardino Luini. he was a student of leonardo and never used halos to distinguish between saint and sinner.
Leonardo was an art instructor. there was no paper but lamb skin, which is difficult to draw on so they used a slab of poplar wood. maybe a foot in diameter. give or take an inch. if you look at the salvator mundi(latin for the christ one) you first notice the person is wearing a dress?! in those days women wore hoods, long sleeve, dress that draged on floor and a straight collar so as not to show clevage. long hair dainty hands. no beard. the painting on wood is student size. when the student mastered painting they would go on to paint on large canvas, frescos.murals. etc.If this painting was made by leonardo it would have also had a Halo. christies and sotherbys are crooks.they brought this painting for 1,000 and paid off all fake authenticators. mona lisa was not made by leonardo, its student size!

The look on Martin Kemp's face when Isaacson mentions Dan Brown.... 😩🤢 ... yes, that queasy feeling when you are used to eating fillet steak and someone offers you a soggy hot dog! 🌭 ... I feel for Kemp.

Martin Kemp seems to have been specializing in dubious Leonardo attributions lately: first the supermarket cashier "La Bella Principessa" (name entirely made up by Kemp), which a forger has admitted making, and now the Salvator Mundi, which has been repainted to be an "authentic" Leonardo at last. Kemp looks to be a member in good standing of the often-wrong-never-in-doubt club.

Thank you. He talks about the "composition" of the Salvator Mundi, but there's not much composition involved, is there? Even Leonardo's lesser works are more imaginative--and more complicated, composition-wise--than the Salvator Mundi. St. John the Baptist faces forward, but he's not *just* facing forward.

Shaun Greenhalgh did Bossy Sally from the CoOp in 1978 in his garden shed in Bolton. The Salvator Mundi, which I've seen, is as much a Leonardo as Martin Kemp's hair is naturally black.

leonardo's "Last supper" does not depict 12 apostles. mother mary stands on one side of jesus, and magdalina sitting on the other side of jesus. every one else have beards.

leonardo da vinci's salvator mundi is conceptual realism painting. it contains the holy bible as the savior of the world..which matches the title of the painting

Actually there is zero evidence that Leonardo was gay. See Peter Silverman's - "Leonardo's Lost Princess". He was married to science and discovery.
