It is located at an altitude of 1,350 meters and has been characterized since 1978 as a "preservable #traditional settlement". It belongs to the Municipality of #Amyntaio of the Regional Unit of Florina. It is located at the southern end of the prefecture of Florina, on the eastern slopes of Mount Vernos, at a distance of 57 km from the #city of Florina via highway 27 and the #Xino #Nero road.
Nymfaio was settled around 1385 by #Vlach Odites, i.e. Latin-speaking native Macedonians, who for 1,400 years guarded the neighboring #Egnatia Odos and who then fled to the inaccessible mountains, after fierce battles with the #Ottomans. The oldest name given by the first inhabitants of the village was #Nivesta, a name of Vlach #origin, with three interpretations: "Bride" because of the beauty of the village (Nivesta in #Slavic languages) and the location, "unseen" (ni vista) probably because it was at a point where it was not easily visible and "snowy" or "where the snow stays" (nives sta).
The official name before liberation - and for some years afterwards - was #Neveska.
Today #Nymphaeum is surrounded by a beech forest and crossed by cobbled paths and stone-built houses. In recent years, with the contribution of important people who come from the village, such as its president Nikolaos Mertzos and the #Boutari family, it has become a pole of attraction for remarkable #tourism.

The organization of #Arktouros is active in the area with an environmental #information center for the brown bear and the wolf one and a half kilometers outside the village. These facilities house bears, which have been confiscated from bear kennels and zoos, and several wolves respectively-animals for which it is considered impossible to reintegrate them into the natural environment. An equestrian group, the urban women's cooperative "The Nymph" which produces and sells traditional #products, five traditional #guesthouses, #restaurants and the community #tourism development enterprise have been created in the area. In the village there is also the half-demolished headquarters of Pavlos #Melas, while the old school of the village, the #Nikios School, donated by Ioannis Zan Nikos (1875-1930) of Nymfaio, which did not function for many years due to a lack of students, is now a #Conference Center of the #Aristotle #University of #Thessaloniki.
Bears, #wines and flawless #beauty: Walking in beech forests full of #mushrooms, playing with #snow next to impressive mansions, fine wines from renowned vineyards, canoeing on Lake #Zazari, encounters with… bears and wolves. Nymphaeum, 28 km from Florina, is not only a #model village, but also a place where the interests are endless. The restorations of the #mansions are flawless, the cobblestones flawless.
#Walk between the stately mansions and notice the tin roofs, which are designed to keep out the #snow. Have your picture taken in front of the Nikeios School and ask the locals about the old #glory days of Nymphaeum, when from the 17th to the 19th century it was the center of commercial activity as one of the largest centers of #silver and #goldsmithing in the #Balkans.
Until January you can also visit the #shelter of the bear of #Arcturus. If you're lucky and they haven't been sleeping (early January), you might see some of the rescued former dancing bears. Alternatively, go down to Agrapidia, where the wolf #sanctuary and the breeding center of the Greek #Shepherd operate. Wine #lovers will find in the area some of the most famous #wineries in Greece (such as the #Alpha #Estate and in the village the gas station of the #Kyr-Yiannis estate), while the more active ones deserve the #experience of #canoeing, #horse #riding and #hiking in Lake Zazari .
If you get it covered in snow - and it is very likely, since this is the norm - Nymphaeum looks like something out of a children's fairy tale. Perhaps the most beautiful stone village in the country, Nymphaeus stands out thanks to its mansions: if you can, it's worth visiting one of them, admiring the old furniture, the ondas and the painted ceilings. The way it looks right after the climb through a winding mountain road, it really takes your breath away. And its entrance is characterized by an arched wooden bridge, which joins two impressive mansions.
