  • Christian Universalism: Second Chances
Is there another chance for repentance after death? What about the parable of the wise and foolish virgins and Christ's teachings about the narrow door?
Addressing the article “12 Questions for the Would-Be Universalist,” released by The Gospel Coalition in December 2022, and written by Michael McClymond.

The question on post mortem salvation I cannot get any non-universalist Christian to answer is this - if the only chance to choose to be with God is this life, when does the person that dies a split second after coming into existence make that choice? Age of accountability says that person lives happily with God forever. That fact completely nullifies the point to this life. Age of accountability demonstrates that the only point to this life is to needlessly put people's eternal fate in serious jeopardy. It shows that we could have skipped this life and all lived happily with God forever.

Solid question, much debated. On a personal level, I think that the proper exercise of free will is an essential part of becoming like Christ. Obviously as a universalist, I think that Christ will, by his power, draw all men to freely choose him - either now or in eternity. Thanks for joining the conversation! Good stuff!

Wow, I think you actually just punched the biggest hole into typical free will theology (the kind that says that God limits His power by respecting our free will and that because of this most people end up in Hell) I think I've ever contemplated. I never thought about it, but most Christians as far as I can tell believe in an age of accountability. But for someone who died at such a young age and, by these people's own admissions, were too young to make a free and informed choice, it would actually be breaching their free will for God to send them to Heaven. They didn't choose Heaven, they weren't capable of it according to these people's argument. And yet God viciously forced them to experience eternal bliss and grace in His presence. How terrible!!! But back to the point. I do believe that we have free will, and I do think that God doesn't want mere robots who love Him because of divine command alone. However, I don't think God's limited Himself (as many do) to where He just won't reveal Himself to people to save them. In fact I think that's a core tenet of biblical universalism, that God will reveal Himself to everyone in the end times and that revealing of Himself will have a terrifying impact on those who aren't ready to meet Him, but this reality is also what will purify and redeem them to enter His presence along with those who believed in this life.

I agree, those mentioned teachings of Christ do not specify that the “casting out” is for an endless duration. After all, doesn’t Jesus reflect the same image and compassion as his own Father? Consider the following:-
LAM 3:31 -32:- For the Lord will not cast us off forever. 32 Even if He causes grief, He will show compassion according to His abundant loving devotion.
Yes, Luke 13:24 does say “Strive to enter through the narrow door”. But, verse 30 also says “And behold, some who are last will be first and some are first who will be last”. In context, Luke 13 doesn’t sound like an endless duration.
In John 12:24 Jesus explains the process of his coming death. Then in verse 32 Jesus tells us plainly that after his death, resurrection and exaltation he will draw/drag “all” people to himself.
For those in doubt, Apostle Paul revealed to us exactly what Christ meant by “dragging all” to himself “after” his finished work on the cross and his exaltation to the fathers right hand: -
Philippians 2: 8-11: - 8 And being found in appearance as a man, HE HUMBLED HIMSELF BY BECOMING OBEDIENT TO THE POINT OF DEATH. DEATH ON A CROSS. 9, FOR THIS REASON, ALSO GOD HIGHLY EXALTED HIM AND BESTOWED ON HIM THE NAME WHICH IS ABOVE EVERY NAME, 10 SO THAT AT THE NAME OF JESUS EVERY KNEE WILL BOW OF THOSE WHO ARE IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH AND UNDER THE EARTH 11 AND THAT EVERY TONGUE WILL CONFESS THAT JESUS CHRIST IS LORD, TO THE GLORY OF GOD THE FATHER.
Does God not lift up “all” who are bowed down Psalm 145:14? Can any man truly call Jesus Lord without the spirit 1 Cor 12:3? Is not a true confession of Christ as Lord not a qualifier for salvation Rom 10:9?
Great presentation, keep up the good work in revealing this long-suppressed truth.
    Peace

It's even better than that. A literal translation of the original biblical text says that every tongue will not "confess" that Jesus is Lord, they will "acclaim" that Jesus is Lord. They will enthusiastically and publically praise Jesus.

@@alwaysadawg6488 I agree. Some bible translations render that same word within the same context as [praise] in another part of Paul's writing in Rom 14:11:-
Rom 14:11:- For it is written: “as I live, says the Lord, to me every knee Will bow, and every tongue will give [praise/exomologeo] to God” NASB.
      Peace

Love the pic of the blind man. If you set out to fulfill your own bias, you will succeed every time. Excellent breakdown of Revelation, which I will add is a merger of the teaching of Isaiah 66 and Psalm 2, with a sort of hopeful invitation that is given AFTER the "second death." A term which is never explained, btw.
-A second chance to repent after death is not only logical, it is the only way for God not to play favorites (Rom 2:11). What of the child born and died in some far off tribe never reached by missionaries? Are they doomed because of the failure of mankind? What of everyone who lived before Christ? Are they doomed by default?
-The real question is, what are you being saved from? Are you being saved from sin and death, as Scripture says, or some nebulous eternal torment not taught by any of Christ's disciples?
-Does the sheep carry itself home? No, God does that. The fact that 1 Timothy 4:10 is so completely ignored or written off is rather ridiculous to be honest.

1:28 no human ever born has a “chance” for salvation. God has not offered a chance to any. Salvation is the work of God and man can neither help nor hinder. Salvation belongs to the Lord! 😊 Rejoice! It is finished.

Also, regarding a second chance, the plan of God for mankind is written in the feasts. We are saved by accepting Messiah as our passover lamb. To say there's no second chance then is incorrect, as there is clearly a second passover. Though, i believe it's best to get it done the first time.

I went to Hell at the age of 20 i must have died, it was a horrible place and to anyone reading this do everything you can to aviod this place which is very real, it took me 30 years to realise wher i had been due to ignorance but now i can state a warning to everyone about Hell as being real and with no hope of return after death.

Silly. No you didn’t. The dead know nothing as they are dead. The spirit returns to God and the body returns to dirt. Besides, hell is a made up doctrine. The word hell does not belong in any bible

As much as I don’t want to insult the legitimacy your experience, you must understand hallucinations do happen. Vivid or lucid dreams do occur, and it’s extremely likely if not damn near fact you saw what you thought you should see.

You say to do what you can to avoid hell. Can you name one thing that man can do on his own? Human effort is worthless to save anyone.

  • @QHarefield

"They will never get out until they have paid the last penny", with the focus on the word 'until.' OK. But ... assuming they do, somehow, manage to scrape together sufficient pennies and pay them, does this not indicate that man can save himself by his own efforts? Or, at best, that he has been saved by a combination of his efforts and Christ's sacrifice?

    • @orthodoxuniversalist
      @orthodoxuniversalist  10 месяцев назад +2

This is a valid question. I think the thing to keep in mind is the Source from which we can obtain “the last penny.” As you say, if a condemned man managed to scrape together enough to spring himself from torment, that would point to his own power influencing the salvific process. In contrast to this, we see Christ as the means by which the sacrifice/ payment for our sins must be satisfied. So what should we conclude?
When I contemplate this issue, I simply land on Christ as the payment that can/will satisfy our debt not only in this life but also in the next. But I believe that God has ordained that faith is the vessel through which God has chosen to release that payment. Thus, when a person turns to Christ by exercising faith in him, the last penny can enter the story. It’s not entering it because we scraped it together ourselves, but because we turned to the owner of it by means of repentance and faith.

@@orthodoxuniversalist I think the only ones who are in Hell forever are the ones that dont dare to step into the light of god ever out of guilt like maybe Judas and those unwilling to ever bow to anyone else like the Devil. He whould rather try to subvert Creation then to bow before god accepting his mercy.
