I’d say with all of these you got it real close, but honestly the eq pedal with the od3 sounded better than the actual pedal you were trying to copy to my ear. Good job and it’s time to buy an od3 and an eq pedal!
Thanks! I feel I struggled most with the Bluesbreaker with it's more saturated higher frequencies, which the OD-3 just doesn't really do. But like you say, I kind of like that cleaner high end in the OD-3 a lot of the time anyway. Thanks for commenting!
@@MichaelBanfieldGuitar I think you nailed the tone of the blues breaker but it was less saturated. To me that’s a good thing cuz I’m generally not a fan heavily saturated tones.

Thanks, it's my benchmark overdrive pedal that I use to test and compare other OD pedals. Always seems to perform well, especially into amps set clean. I think it's a good choice for using with an EQ pedal like this because the OD-3 has a nice full frequency response as a starting point.
Michael, I share your fascination and awe with the power of EQ’s. I started with a Boss GE-7, then added 3 Behringer EQ700’s for each Marshall in the fx loops. I recently picked up an Ibanez Pentatone Parametric EQ which is fantastic! Very high quality, quiet, and amazingly broad for 5 bands due to the frequency and Q adjustment. For $129 it’s a steal given it’s capabilities
Running an overdrive and an EQ pedal together is a great idea. David GIlmour and Steve Stevens both do it. It realy helps get the most out of the the OD pedal. This was a great video.
No it wasn't. MXR for example doesn't allow that. The MXR overdrive pedal still requires the carbon copy delay pedal to complete the signal. So the MXR overdrive and EQ pedal both require the carbon copy delay pedal to complete the signal going to the amplifier.
I started doing this myself. I got the idea from that Automotone pedal thing. All I first had was an EQ and a boost. Then I got a couple of overdrives and experimented with the EQ before and after. Realized after was better, then realized I personally only need to the one overdrive (an OCD) and the EQ.
But I can change your sound from my TV. You think this is still 1980, but its 2022. My TV has a hundred tiny amplifiers. I can change everything about your sound.

I must have tried out 20 or more overdrive pedals during the first lockdown furlough, some of which were very expensive "boutique" offerings! I was on a quest! I ended up with an old OD-3 which I paid absolute peanuts for and a Lovepedal Purple Plexi. Job done!
Awesome video man. The EQ can make one overdrive into many unique different tones.. for all pedals for that matter. Every board needs an EQ to really get the most out of your pedals.
After buying many many many overdrive pedals, I came to the conclusion that all I needed was a soft clipping O/D, a hard clipping O/D and an EQ pedal and I pretty much have them all covered.
The OD-3 is such a typical (in a good way) overdrive sound, not to hard (it's no RAT) and not to lite (it's no blues breaker). It's literally THEY overdrive sound o think of when I imagine "overdrive". A must have tool and probably can provide the tone most people are forever chasing.
One thing to note about the Klon is that unless the gain knob is all the way up you're getting some of the clean signal in parallel, so just an EQ into an overdrive won't quite get you the same sound. Remarkably close though, good video.
Great side-by-side! I've been using my EQ pedal for years to get good sounds out of my Metal Zone ( Let the jokes commence)! I just roll off the high end at 6K and it really takes care of the bee hive buzz. From there the sky is the limit on how you want to shape the mids. I've also used it in the FX Loop of several amps to change the character when in a pinch.
doesn't the metal zone already have an unusually complex and powerful EQ control in those 2 double knobs in the middle? or was that a different metal pedal?
Yes it has a 3 band EQ with the ability to shape the Mid frequency. This still pales in comparison to a 10 band, which lets you individually shape specific frequencies and you get more control over the Bass and Treb as well.
I had an MT2 and kind of regret selling it. I bought it because it covered a lot of ground soundwise, but I never adjusted it once I found a sound that suited this band I was in. I ended up preferring to use two channel amps instead and my pedals fell into disuse. I kept my SD1 and Guv'nor, selling everything else.
Thanks, I'd love to be able to do more videos. I learn a lot from making them and it's great to hear when other people are finding it useful too. Thank you!
Great video. EQ pedals can also be used to shape the sound of pick-ups. They can make a Tele single-coil can be made to sound like a P90 or even a PAF, and vice versa. They can also be used to shape the tone of your amp. You can't exactly make a Black Face Fender sound like a Marshal or Vox, but you can use them to make it sound more like on them, and that greatly expands the utility of your amp. Just have to say, I absolutely love the Boss SD-1. I've been using it for years as my main overdrive, and it always sounds great going into a tube amp.
Good job on the video. Have ever thought about doing a video using 2 Boss Overdrive pedals together? Why I ask this is because I like a guitarist named Criss Oliva (from Savatage). Criss has a very unique sound/tone. I have read that he used 2 Boss Overdrive pedals to get his sound/tone. Some great songs for examples of his tone are Hall of the Mountain King, The Price You Pay, Strange Wings.
Get a GE7 eq...a Blues Driver and a DS 1 and you can dial in any gain tones you could ever want...I recently added the Wampler Triumph and Phenom to my collection and they're great but I still love those 3 old pedals I've used for decades.
A decade (or even two) ago there was an article on the internet that made the case that any guitar sound could be emulated with this chain : Distortion -> EQ -> Distortion -> EQ -> Distortion -> EQ Seems like you're pretty much proving that the first Distortion -> EQ pair is true. (The distortion pedal pair... the other two pairs would pretty much be the amp's preamp + EQ Stack and the amp's power amp and speaker. Throw compression in, in the right spots and it's a pretty flexible rig. (At least in the digital domain where you can easily stack as many copies of a plugin as you want. With real analog stuff it could get expensive, fast, LOL!)
This was Tom Scholz’s discovery that he used to creat his iconic sounds. He used EQ before and after a clipping circuit. Clipping is clipping. Sound changes from how hard and EQ… maybe some extra character comes from symmetrical vs asymmetrical clipping. Maybe.
Absolutely wanna vomit when I hear that guitar sound. Always wondered what frequency was cut or boosted. I don’t obsess over overdrives but did find switching to a Bluesbreaker type was a huge step forward from my SD-1. Assuming Im happy with the amp and guitar I’m playing.
This is great. I have an EQ200 and place one channel before and after my dirt pedals so that I can turn, say, a Rat into different rats; One with more bass, a mid boosted one and by pulling down some of the frequencies in the pre-eq having an 'underdriven' cleaner version, like a volume knob roll back. I wonder if where some of your approximations differed in compression, this could be remedied by shaping the EQ before and after.
This was impressive - I'll be trying these settings, but I have the overdrive/distortion pedal (OS2). I would be great to see what you can do with one of those. Also, I would enjoy your take on the Ibanez renometer pedal - five band eq with boost and high boost. Thank you
Yes I have an old video on the Boss OS-2 comparing it to some classic overdrives and distortion - ruclips.net/video/hgTKYSmIm40/видео.html. It's a very different sounding pedal to the OD-3, it's great though!
Ibanez pedal Ibanez guitar. We've all moved on from this childish approach you have. We paid Eddie van halen to do all the research. We stopped wasting time and money. You're like a little kid mucking around with your little Ibanezy things.
These days, whenever I think another drive pedal, I turned on one that I already have + an mxr eq and give up on the idea. It's crazy how MUCH you can change the sound with an eq pedal. I actually use a fairfield ~900 pedal along with the EQ, the bias control offer quite a bit of different sounds, the EQ then does its magic and done, GAS is gone!
EQ + OD3 does everything imho. I love the amazing range of sounds you can get from those two as you so wonderfully demonstrate. :) Edit: 100% need to upgrade the opamps in the older GE-7's to NE5534P's though. Much too noisy otherwise. I hear the newer made GE-7's with all SMD components are a lot better for noise thankfully.
My Boss GE-7 and Behringer EQ700 work so well I may get rid of my Super Overdrive. The SOD adds some warmth or power frequencies I do NOT want. The preamp on the EQ adds bite. Kinda makes the SOD kind of obsolete. In fact I bought a Behringer EQ700 for the fx loop for each of my Marshall’s. EQs are incredible. And you can gain stage them
Hello, my friend! I use a generic overdrive with this equalizer pedal to simulate distortion pedals from the sixties, seventies, and eighties. I can't figure out what amplifier or pedal I am "copying" or simulating, but the sound changes a lot when I mess with equalizer. Very handy gear, in my opinion...underrated by many young musicians who top priority is to buy many amps or pedals.
The manufacturer doesn't give you a choice. You can't plug a power drill into a TV. You can't plug a washing machine into a TV either. All items must be from the same brand.
Did you notice any added noise or hiss with that boss EQ pedal? I have been reading nothing but bad reviews for those saying they're extremely noisy but I also heard a couple years back they finally fixed that problem. Before that everybody had to have a modded so they would get rid of the noise.
I need to do this kind of experimentation the opposite way, to see if I can get my OD-2 to sound more like an OD-3; bring back some of that shelved bass and cut some of the mid hump.
This is so awesome. Last week during my guitar lessons I realised that the kind of pedal I need is a simple overdrive. My teacher has a lot different pedals on the board for his students. For the last song we were playing last three weeks (heavy fuzz bluesrock) I played through the Boss BD2. It sounded soo nice and round with a fuzzy feeling. I think it fits in my style. I was always focused on distortions (because I love metal). But for the music I play: (blues)rock, pop and a lot of regular guitar exercises. I don't need a heavy fancy distortion metalish pedal. And during searching a lot of info about the BD2, the OD3 came in sight. So I am in doubt, the BD2 or OD3? Or both! I have a MXR EQ pedal. Maybe I should get a second hand OD3. Is it possible to use the OD3 as a attenuator? I also own the DOD Carcosa Fuzz. Nice pedal but sometimes I struggle for the tones I want in that specific moment.
Thanks! Yeah the compression and saturation is definitely different on the OCD, although it sounded very similar in the room at the time, you can hear the difference in the recorded sound. Thanks for commenting!
Interesting video! I had an OD-3 but found it had far too much compression, which killed any dynamics, and I also had a GE-7, which added a load of hiss/white noise when the sliders were moved more than a few dB (which you didn't do), although I know of a mod that corrects this. In any case, I sold both those pedals.
Do you think a blues driver could also emulate these pedals with an eq? I have one of those and I'm thinking of buying an EQ to get more versatility out of it.
Tom Bukovac uses his EQ pedal just like this but uses his for changing his Guitar tone to make one guitar sound like other models, there's a great video on some Guitar Mag YT Page showing him doing this.

Boss pedals Boss amplifier.
Thanks a lot for this revealing demo ...
Now i want an OD-3 (;-)
Such an interesting video, nice one mate!
Get a GE7 eq...a Blues Driver and a DS 1 and you can dial in any gain tones you could ever want...I recently added the Wampler Triumph and Phenom to my collection and they're great but I still love those 3 old pedals I've used for decades.
A decade (or even two) ago there was an article on the internet that made the case that any guitar sound could be emulated with this chain : Distortion -> EQ -> Distortion -> EQ -> Distortion -> EQ
Seems like you're pretty much proving that the first Distortion -> EQ pair is true.
Maybe.
Yes! That's a really good reality check for anyone obsessing over different flavours of overdrive.
I wish I could like your videos more than once.
Nice work, I think you nailed it!
@@MichaelBanfieldGuitarWatched your os2 video - again very helpful! I wonder what you could do with an os2 and eq pedal combo.
Ibanez pedal Ibanez guitar.
We've all moved on from this childish approach you have.
We paid Eddie van halen to do all the research.
We stopped wasting time and money.
You're like a little kid mucking around with your little Ibanezy things.
Fantastic video and comparison
These days, whenever I think another drive pedal, I turned on one that I already have + an mxr eq and give up on the idea. It's crazy how MUCH you can change the sound with an eq pedal. I actually use a fairfield ~900 pedal along with the EQ, the bias control offer quite a bit of different sounds, the EQ then does its magic and done, GAS is gone!
Close enough, I'd say. Impressive work!
EQ + OD3 does everything imho. I love the amazing range of sounds you can get from those two as you so wonderfully demonstrate. :)
Edit: 100% need to upgrade the opamps in the older GE-7's to NE5534P's though. Much too noisy otherwise. I hear the newer made GE-7's with all SMD components are a lot better for noise thankfully.
IME the newer SMT ones are indeed quieter and sound better, I had an old one and a new one, I compared them, and sold the older one.
The conclusion here is, the OD3 + EQ pedal is a killer combination!!
Hello, my friend!
I use this equalizer to simulate different distortion sounds.
Another great way to use an EQ pedal. I’d love to do a video on that too. Thanks for commenting!
Did you notice any added noise or hiss with that boss EQ pedal? I have been reading nothing but bad reviews for those saying they're extremely noisy but I also heard a couple years back they finally fixed that problem. Before that everybody had to have a modded so they would get rid of the noise.
Excellent video! ❤️❤️
I need to do this kind of experimentation the opposite way, to see if I can get my OD-2 to sound more like an OD-3; bring back some of that shelved bass and cut some of the mid hump.
Great video my friend. You got one more subscriber:-)
Interesting 🤔
Since you don't need it anymore
can I have your Bluesbreaker ?? ☺️
Nice pedal but sometimes I struggle for the tones I want in that specific moment.
bro you are a legend
Great video 👍
All of the GE-7 plus OD-3 sound remarkably better to my ears.
Great video! Eq+od3 could mimic almost everything ...except OCD - to my ears ocd is stil sounds "creamier".
Thanks! Yeah the compression and saturation is definitely different on the OCD, although it sounded very similar in the room at the time, you can hear the difference in the recorded sound. Thanks for commenting!
Great video man! I have no respect for the GE7! I use mine for that live mid boost thing but I will strat messing with it more now thanks again!
I have an XTS modded ge-7 and it’s the best pedal I own. The modded version is certainly worth it
How would a Malmsteen tone look just using the Eq and the Boss?
Do you think a blues driver could also emulate these pedals with an eq? I have one of those and I'm thinking of buying an EQ to get more versatility out of it.
Michael we’re would you place your eq pedal on your board
Tom Bukovac uses his EQ pedal just like this but uses his for changing his Guitar tone to make one guitar sound like other models, there's a great video on some Guitar Mag YT Page showing him doing this.
not sure who that is but Tom Scholz was doing that 40 years ago
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 how could use GE 7 in line to simulate cabinet
I'm convinced on everything except the ODR-1. The Nobels sounds cleaner, more even. Even equalized the OD-3 sounds a little fat in the mids.
Super vidéo
Yeah You're good
as an alternative to the eq > drive, using an eq > preamp like the benson, can give you a lot more flexibility than the eq > OD-3
So do you think messing with the EQ and a CS3 would get closer if the compression and sustain feel a bit different?
I would set the amp lil bit break up if using those pedals. Are u try it yet?? U wont need any other od pedal when u already have that good fender amp
you can use the od3 and the ge7 to emulate a hm2?
