(3:36) *”If they treat you like a substitute teacher, it’s probably because you have no class.” That was the best line in the song and there were many good lines. Substitute teachers are more disrespected than regular teachers because they don’t actually have a class; they’re just a substitute. But he uses class metaphorically speaking not just about a classroom but whether or not a woman has class. That’s why the line is so clever and ingenious.*
I love this guy. he's like the perfect emcee. Beautifully formed rhymes, vast vocabulary, awareness of the world, meaningful lyrics. He's fucking insane.
Had the honour of meeting Shad at R&B a few years ago; he is this music. Chillest guy I have even had the pleasure of meeting. Get into this music people.
false, maybe you should try harder to find rappers then, DTMD,Specifics,Kooley High, j-dilla, kev brown, oddisee, all of them have meaning in their lyrics.
sad to say i have only heard of him until 30 minutes ago and after checking out 5+ songs by him he keeps showing me why and why he is my new favorite. wow. i havent gotten this feeling from music in a long time :)
this moment when you discover a new song and you realize that it will probably always stay one of you favorite tunes. at least of the ones I discovered in 2013. what a flow!!
Shad is on another level and is rooted in the true tradition of hip-hop. I don't think its right to label him as an "artist" if you compare him to the "artist's" of are time like lil wayne or really any "pop" artist, who really don't give a shit about craft, just making another quick $. He is really a genuine rapper and genuine person, you can just tell by his work, he puts a whole hell of a lot of heart into it. I'm just glad that people in a general sense are starting to actually LISTEN.
I think the best thing about shad is that he doesn't swear. Not that it offends me but so many bad rappers swear just as filler words because they can't think of anything else to say. It just proves how shad really is a lyrical genius.
common is legendary in every sense of the word..as far as status and accomplishments..old school and new. I was talking about skill, writing style and musical talent, freestyling and such..shad is at a way more impressive level then common ever will be.
"I guess I'm being a mysogynist and I acknowlege this, but the problem is I just don't see all girls as goddesses" priceless and sublimely well written line :D
i love the Old Prince album I wanna get this one bad but cant find it anywhere and its sad cuz i'm in ottawa and hes an ottawa artist!! i no i cant get it off itunes but i'm a cd collecter so id rather have the hard copy
After listening to this song so much today prob 30 times, i just realized, they sampled some of the cosby music, you can hear it clearly after he says he wants a claire huckstable, beautiful fuckin song man.
i like both versions but i was just wondering who lives 2 better than 1 or vice verse (keep it friendly ppl!!) plus i live in canada and i cant find his 1st album.....how sad is that?
@Drum44er Please, explaing to me what "real hip hop" is. Whether you like it or not, Soulja Boy is real hip hop. Shad is a great artist, but saying he's better than Common? thats too far. Shad is my favortie rapper btw.
@hitch4645 wow you can't even compare to the two. way different styles, cadence, vernacular, colloquial references, etc...i dig his some of his metaphors but his flow is exactly the same cadence as skee-lo. am i the only one here who remembers h.e.r?
CONT... even in rap he is focused on conscious topics, uses more melodic beats and alot of vocals, and has a very unique flow. He is a far stretch from mainstream rap, and the same could be said about his more "pop(ular)" songs. At no point has Lupe had an influence on mainstream pop music, he just is able to incorporate a range of sound into his rap. Lupe is not mainstream pop shit, his career has proven that he is highly talented and a consistent force in the rap world. Lupe is good hip-hop.
@Drum44er hold it dont get ahead of yourself common is still one of the realest..common and shad are two real hip hop artist..both of these two are real in theyre own ways

so true. love this song.
I think the best thing about shad is that he doesn't swear.
Not that it offends me but so many bad rappers swear just as filler words because they can't think of anything else to say. It just proves how shad really is a lyrical genius.
Yes yes, y'all. I'm going to find this. AWESOME. Sick flow and lyrics.

SHad is PURE GENIUS!!!!
Shad is a genius.
"If they treat ya like a substitute teacher it's prabably cause ya got no class": the work of a lyrical genius.
The circle around his head look like a halo. Shad's like a saint.

"I guess I'm being a mysogynist and I acknowlege this, but the problem is I just don't see all girls as goddesses" priceless and sublimely well written line :D
this girl loves shad. straight up.
Shad... he's too smart to even be considered a rapper, he's like, a philosopher, talking with unmatched flow, and an acoustic guitar.
This is completely fire
I LOVE the way he says "Clair Huxtable"
Love this song.

THIS IS LIFE
I love SHAd
great beyond description
Man when this is over is deffinately his best album, i mean i love the new shit but you just cant beat this.

Why don't real lyrical genius's go big? This is 10x better than every big song in Pop culture. What's happened to our music taste?
All of his stuff is good. He deserves some fucking recognition
@mobbvic
the song is A Certain Sadness by Astrud Gilberto
I'm not sure if it is the same voice but it is certainly sampled from that song

"short skirts tend to mirror our sense of self worth, sometimes..."
This album is soooooooooooooooo slept on.

Very much agreed. He still uses profanities and an adult vocabulary, but not in a derogatory manner, and it's not a series of four letter words,
