    This comment is posted below, but it also applies to getting a long outside leg. It's not done by extending as many instructors and skiers misunderstand basic ski technique. "Let pressure come to you, buy increasing your leg and boot tipping. Most people think they have to push, to get edge pressure, this is the wrong approach, pushing on the edge only throws your body out of balance." The same applies to getting a "long outside leg", get it through inside leg flexing, relaxing and letting the hip drop inside, and tipping. Do not ever push the leg long, it only serves to push yourself out of balance. Golden Rules of Skiing, at the Expert Level, that your instructors never told you.

      I agree with allowing your CM to be pulled across the skis by the centripetal force generated by the apex of the turn, no physical pressure required from the skier, more of a submission/relaxing to the forces. This provides a very quick crossover and immediate edge engagement of the new outside ski, a wonderful turn indeed. And yes the ski provides the added pressure as it arcs back toward the CM. When PSIA jumped off the rails some years ago I left the fold. I found your videos online and found myself in agreement with your technique because frankly this is how I ski and teach. I know we are talking the same turning method and I'm beginning to understand that extending is a hot button for you that you only use as a negative, possibly because you feel the word indicates a rising or pressuring of the new outside ski. I however understand the word extend to mean lengthen. I therefore agree to disagree with the meaning you have of the word but agree with your method of teaching and skiing. I hope you have a great season, I hear you've been getting lots of snow, enjoy.

      In PMTS we only use language that actually conveys accuracies of movement, and what we are teaching. therefore we don't use "extending", or extension or pushing. These words provide confusion and the opposite of what we teach. We teach relaxation and flexing to change edges. Extension is a push either against gravity or pushes the body out of balance. Accuracy of language and the consequences, is the first thing an instructors should understand.

    I've been trying to get on the inside ski edge earlier and with more weightto lose some of the old A frame. I still have trouble trusting that exaggerated inside tip that you demo. But of course it's easier on my slalom skis at 68mm underfoot...
    Does anyone still recommend one ski off like the racers practice? Assuming soft conditions...

    even though im not extending i feel like im having troubles with too much bending at the waste. is this just about learning to relax the lower back and trust the legs?

    Harold I have enjoyed your instructions and it has made a good difference in my skiing.I do have a question, as I watch FIS events it seems the racers always extend . The inside leg is really extended during the transition any thoughts?

      This is not a 2 minute explanation, but if you read my book, "The Essentials of Skiing' It is all in there.. Sure the goal is to get the outside leg long the inside leg should not get long) again from turn to turn. The process can be either done right or incorrectly. But it's not done by pushing off with an up movement.

    at the end you say delay new big toe engagement. do you mean engage after new LTE is established?

    • @skiwhh
      @skiwhh  9 лет назад +4

      Yes exactly, that is what sets up your body alignment to deal with the forces.

    Would you say through turn transition you are retracting?

    • @skiwhh
      @skiwhh  9 лет назад +3

      Yes, either retracting for fast traditions, or flexing for more moderate edge changes.

    At 2.35 you say 'now I set pressure to the edge' - this is clearly a key skill - could you give more detail of how you achieve this. Thanks.

      Let pressure come to you, but increasing your leg and boot tipping. Most people think they have to push, to get edge pressure, this is the wrong approach, pushing on the edge only throws your body out of balance.

      Thanks Harald for confirming this - as an instructor it annoys me to hear fellow instructors saying push on your feet/big toe/skis to turn the skis. As you said, this action simply throws you out of balance and results in on out of balance skid. Would you agree that the issue of pressure increase is more a case of dealing with it through muscular tension and balance and as you said increased tipping - which causes the increasing pressure. Thanks.
