Opened in 1858 the Illinois State Penitentiary was considered the high watermark of correctional facilities. Its architecture and history have made it a formidable presence in the town of Joliet, Illinois ever since. When the Old Joliet Prison, as it’s now known, fell into disrepair, the historical society stepped in. Their goal: acknowledge the history and infamous baggage of the prison while providing visitors an opportunity to learn.
