I would like to force many american critics to listen to this. They still think Chet burned out after his early success with Gerry Mulligan. In fact he was so much deeper and mature in his later years. Here he is at the top of his form. A true masterpiece!
Let em roll - Couldn't agree more - The playing on live in Tokyo is incredible, with support from the sublime Harold Denko on keys, & the accomplished Heineken van derived geyn on bass, & the fabulous John Engels on drums anchoring it all together but still swinging like the rest of them. They'll be listening to this in 200 years with amazement
I have been listening to jazz/music for over sixty years and where many musicians seem to say "this is what I can do" Chet always says "This is what THIS SONG CAN DO". So much talent with so much modesty and reverence.
I have just listened 4 or 5 times, this is new to me. It rocked me in the cradle of the most tender love and joy - You are so right - this music, this version, with these musicians - it is a tenderizer of the human heart
Recorded a year before his tragic death in 1988 after he had started back on drugs and fell from a hotel window, the 1987 Live In Tokyo showed Chet Baker offering some of his finest playing ever- with an incredible rework of the Jobim tune "Portrait in black and white" #WestSideOfJazz
One of the most amaizing Jobim compositions, with Chico Buarque´s lyrics inmersed in the music, motivates Chet Baker´s great solo and these wonderful european musicians...So much beauty going on, oh dear...
The song was released as Zingaro without lyrics by Jobim. Later Jobim asked Chico Buarque to write the lyrics. It was from then on that the song became known as Portrait in black and white..
This '87 concert in Tokyo, a year before Chet's death, is one of best performances of his life.....absolutely brilliant !!
logansGT - Totally agree. Many people _wrongly_ said that his best years were behind him.

You are right. I agree with you. I feel pround because it is a music from my country, Brasil, composed by Tom Jobim and Chico Buarque

I never thought of it that way with Chet but yes, "what this song can do".....spot on !
One can tell you´ve listened a lot. That was an insightful remark!
A big AMEN to that!
Perfectly described

the best version of this jobim melody i have ever heard
You must hear Joao Gilberto's version - to me that's the definite take...
Chet once said: " It takes a pretty good drummer to be better than no drummer at all."
John Engels is one of those drummers. How subtle!

Retrato em Branco e Preto !! Que lindooooo !! Chet forever !!!
Jazz=The best Therapy for the Soul
I love this album and especially this track.
Great playing by everyone.
Chet Baker, I love so much! 💔

Harold Dank is American piano player, John and Hein are drummer and bassist from Netherlands :D
Best sound ever
Chet's best work was in the 1980s and this is a great example.
Fantastic ! Sooooo beautiful !!

Já conheço os passos dessa estrada
Sei que não vai dar em nada
Seus segredos sei de cor
Já conheço as pedras do caminho,
E sei também que ali sozinho,
Eu vou ficar tanto pior
Volta sempre a enfeitiçar
Com seus mesmos tristes, velhos fatos,
Que num álbum de retratos
Eu teimo em colecionar
Lá vou eu de novo como um tolo,
Procurar o desconsolo,
Que cansei de conhecer
Novos dias tristes, noites claras,
Versos, cartas, minha cara
Ainda volto a lhe escrever
Pra lhe dizer que isso é pecado,
Eu trago o peito tão marcado
De lembranças do passado e você sabe a razão
Vou colecionar mais um soneto,
Outro retrato em branco e preto
A maltratar meu coração
❤️I Love it 🎺
CHET "CLEAN".WHAT A BEAUTYFULL "DRIVE".
Plays a ballad oh so heavenly.
Awesome! Chet Baker, Tom Jobim and Chico Buarque.
Tom & Chico
Hearing Chet I hear also my brother playing almost the same sound (coming out of heaven)
Rendido frente a tanta belleza
Great track from one of Chet´s best albums ever. A classic. He had so much left to give when he dies, but let´s be thankful for what we got.
Let `Em Roll ,the version on “let’s get lost “ is also amazingly beautiful but more blissful with some great guitar.
Jobim is smiling from the Bossa Elysian Fields
This is one of my favorite songs ever. Why is volume so low?
This is to make music!
superlative ...
isn't this Zingaro? is this an american name for it?
