waffle033 Karkat once had black feelings for John. When he confronted John about them John didn't recuperate say that he's "not a homosexual" (Im not trying to be rude, that just what John says). Karkat was really torn up about it. He also had a huge flush crush on Terezi but things didn't go well with them and a matespritship ether never happened or it just didn't work so that also really tore up his heart (I'm not tottaly sure what happened to them, I just know that the relationship didn't work out). waffle033 this is hemostuck karkat singing, not regular karkat. i believe hemostuck is when a character is a different blood color than they are in canon, so in this song karkat is a seadweller which explains the watery theme. alternatively, if you're not into hemostuck, it would be equally viable to say that he and sollux suffered a bad breakup and so karkat ran to eridan as a sort of rebound. but this is purely a solkat song, hence at the end when he says "sollux please" also at the beginning when he says "theres a side of you that i always knew, and the things you said, they were never true" that's referring to that back and forth banter between karkat and sollux and how they always pretend they hate each other from the general context of the song, we can assume that karkat and sollux were involved in a matespritship ("i let it fall, my heart, and as it fell you rose to claim it" ; "when i'm with you, i'm at home, i'm not alone") but karkat somehow betrayed sollux in a way that he couldn't forgive ("took the stars from my eyes, let myself fall into darkness one last time" ; "well i burned paradise and the tides aren't enough to rescue me") the song is about how karkat regrets the end of his matespritship with sollux and how he wishes sollux could forgive him ("and when i reach that other shore, i'll be reminded of what i'm looking for. even now when my world is over, i can't help myself from longing for you")
