It's hard to imagine nowadays, but when Alien was first released, Sigourney Weaver was a largely unknown actress, so it must have come as a big surprise when prolific actors like Tom Skerritt, Ian Holm, and John Hurt were killed off, leaving Weaver as the sole survivor in the end. Similarly, when Metroid was released, most female characters in video games were just damsels in distress, so it was a big twist in the end when Samus subverted players' expectations and was revealed to be a woman under that suit. I can't help thinking that this may have been connected.

Hey Albert, here's some other references I was sure you'd include. In Alien 3 you have the Xenomorph not attack Ripley because she carries the Queen, in Super Metroid (the 3rd game) you have the titular Super Metroid stop its attack on Samus because it sees her as its mother. In Fusion (the 4th game) you have Samus infused with Metroid DNA in a similar way Ripley is a Human/Xenomorph hybrid in Alien Resurrection, as well as the military force having a bioweapon project with the Xenomorphs in the same way the Federation had a Metroid bioweapon project, you could even make the argument that the Newborn is an evil mutated version of Ripley. Then later on you could say the roles flipped, since you can clearly see some inspiration in Prometheus and Covenant, like the Black Goo being a substance that takes over the enviroment and "corrupts" the bioforms into agressive violent mutants like Phazon, or even the Ing.

The Ferrocrusher was basically the Power Lifter suit crossed with a mining machine. Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion continue the parallels with Alien 3 and Resurrection, respectively. A part 2 could be in order.
When i first played Super Metroid i really had that Alien feeling. When i played the prime series i didn't really felt it, i hope Prime 4 goes more in a darker direction
I also think Alien 3 also did play somewhat of a role, at least in fusion. Both Ridley and Samus deal with a loss of their agency, and find out they’re being used to incubate a weaponized lifeform, and attempt to end their life (in differing ways) to stop the weapon.
Ridley was named after the director of the movie Alien:Ridley Scott I've noticed quite the trend that there have been some people who have names of Nintendo characters
for example Kirby is the surname of the lawyer that defended Nintendo in a demand from Universal Studios Due to the similarities between Donkey Kong and King kong Names
Nice vid, it collects all the references and inspired ideas throughout the series and makes it easy to go through. I was wondering though if you'd ever make a video going over references and inspiration that Matroid may have based from other series. Like I think Metroid fusion has a lot of ideas based off of the movie, "The Thing". SA-X is essentially that monster only instead of it being an ancient entity with an uncountable amount of years preying on life through out the universe, it's a fairly new/ immature entity with the potential to be what the Thing was in that movie. I also like the idea that Metroid can house the concepts of various epic sci-fi franchises in it's own creative way.
I heard that the 1975 Tom Baker Doctor Who story, "The Ark in Space" also influenced Mr. Scott as well, since the way the creatures in that story reproduce is similar (and based on actual wasps who paralyze caterpillars and lay its eggs in their bodies, and when the larvae emerge, they got a ready-made food supply). It also takes place on an isolated space station, in orbit of a restored earth. Good story, I recommend watching it. tardis.fandom.com/wiki/The_Ark_in_Space_(TV_story)
Super metroid Alien 3, there is only one creature left, everyone seems to be hunting for it, in the end the protagonist embraces the creature like its mother before death. Metroid fusion, alien resurrection: the protagonist is brought back to life by fusing with the creature's DNA, the humans begin to clone the creatures for their purposes.
I have another theory that might have served as inspiration for Samus Visor, and perhaps im the only one who noticed it. If you look carefully at the “Alien” poster with the Egg, the Egg Hatch that shines in greens has a similar shape to samus Visor. It looks even more alike with Dark Samus Visor/Face or the Re-design Visor on Samus Returns, but it resembles the same shape. Also, Samus visor is green color. The same color on the Egg Hatch on the poster. After u see this, u will never unsee it and it will blow your mind for all the years passed unoticed 😅
I actually watched the first two Alien movies in february for the first time and I love them so much. I watched Prometheus and Alien Covenant when they came out and I did not really like them too much. These old movies just get the perfect atmosphere that then was adapted by the Metroid games. To me it's all about being alone or being separated from the group (like in Other M) while there is a threat you might not wanna encounter. The movies are the perfect blueprint for Dead Space as well I think. Space, Spaceship, Weapon Suits and weird looking creatures are by far my favourite set piece for any type of media. Btw, all the new merch designs are crazy, I'm definitely going to order the Dark Samus one with the red japanese text even though I can't read it but it looks so good
The newer movies (Prometheus, Covenant) don't even come close to the two first ones. Despite being made by Ridley Scott, they barely work as prequels...Prometheus should have been something different anyways and Covenant barely builds upon Prometheus. It's quite a disappointment that Scott made such weak new entries in this franchise he started. They look great, but that's about it.
@@Ray_2112 Sadly that's true. Back then there were more restrictions to VFX than today and it let people think outside the box to effectively create a sense of dread. Nowadays there is too much realistic splatter that tries to scare us. But we all know that not knowing the threat is way more effective story telling than showing us blood and violence
@@Shattengarde Exactly. It's weird how a director like Scott knew this decades ago and still made it worse today. oO Btw., I can recommend Alien Isolation a lot, it's probably the best Alien game out there and perfectly captures the atmosphere and look of the first Alien movie.
Oh btw I also just recently watched 1982‘s „The Thing“ which is pretty similar to Alien but it also perfectly nails the atmosphere. Imo even a little bit better than Alien. Even though it might sound like a ripoff I highly recommend watching The Thing especially when you already liked Alien

I was recently finally able to watch all Alien movies and yeah it is really apparent how Metroid took inspiration from it, in a good way ofc. Apart from those you mentioned, I would like also to point a couple other out: Metroid OtherM also has many plot similarities to Aliens, with Samus joining as an outsider a group of marines with a deleter in them to explore a mysterious situation that triggers the protagonist's PTSD, Newt is also kind of like the Baby (or it should be the other way around), and not to mention the Ferrocrusher boss being basically a buffed up version of the robo suit Ripley worn at the end of Aliens. Then Metroid Fusion takes its basic plot points from Alien Resurrection when you think about it. Not to mention lots of other visual similarities between the two.
Little backstory about myself and Alien & Metroid. In 2016 I was looking for good movies to watch for my autumn school break. Since it was October I started looking for horror & alien is what really interested me. So I watched them and fell in love with the franchise, I got videogames and some spin off movies, I even went to see Alien Covenant later on, it sucked but I enjoyed it. But I’m also a sucker for old video games and I then read an article about how Alien inspired videogames from the same era which was Metroid and since I already had and NES I bought Metroid in the summer of 2018. I loved it and later on I bought the Prime games and even later in 2020 I got a SNES and bought Metroid 2 and Super Metroid and now waiting here for Prime 4.
When i used to have a nes, my favorite game was Metroid, and when i had a snes, my favorite was super metroid. I always loved playing those games, and everything about them but i never thought of why until i found out about all the references to the Alien movies! I was always a big fan of the Alien movies!
I looked at your stickers, and I think it would be adorable if you made a Halloween Samus sticker. Samus in a Ridley costume really made my day when I first saw it.
Metroid Fusion actually looks pretty similar to Alien 3 and Resurrection plot and atmosphere wise. Besides, the X Parasites and the Things from the John Carpenter film have some intense similarities.
Ya know, there was a Wii game called Alien: Isolation that was pretty much a reskin of Metroid: Other M It has the automatic doors and the same flat map, the upgrade-based puzzle solving, and the save stations that restore your ammo
Yeah, see, this is what I was talking about with Unlimited Lives when he was doing a video of Star Trek Voyager Season 3 Episode Whatever "Macrocosm" ... He pulled out the Ellen Ripley comparison. I pulled out the Samus Aran comparison. And he was all like "yeah... the morph ball would have made it easier to move through the Jeffries Tubes." Which honestly leads me to think someone should do a mod of one of the Prime games (or maybe OtherM) that's basically that episode, played from Captain Janeway's perspective, with Metroid Prime-type mechanics, but Star Trek Voyager-type aesthetics, equipment, and so on.
Nice video man, thanks for the upload. I needed a Metroid media injection. I'll get some prints when my next paycheck comes in. You've got an impressive style man.

@@TheOrpheon You know, a few words on their basic stages and/or mutations like Super Metroid or Metroid Prime. Their Abilities, physical form, where they were ecountered & their fate.
Great video, as usual! However... I have small favor to ask... Since you mentioned that Metroid Manga is officially canon, how does it work with Chozo Memories from Return of Samus? There are some things colliding with each other (at least as i see them), e.g. how Chozo were depicted in both games - either as a dying race trying to fix their mistakes before they vanish forever or as a strong, intelligent science warrior race with a misterious plot twist of killing their own people with a huge army. I simply can't see how woild they be so old and fragile while also being able to fight off metroids before they leave. Thank you for any help with this!
Well the answer is rather simple. We don't know exactly how long ago the events of the Chozo Memories took place before the Manga. So it could be done at any point, and since the way the 11th memory is a secret, it can be easy to assume the Chozo on Zebes (that we see in the manga) do not know of the true things that happened on the planet, which perhaps could have been covered up by the elite chozo if you may
@@TheOrpheon You're right! I forgot that Chozo in the Manga were already trying to "awake" metroids when Samus was still a child, so they had everything else set up. This would explain it quite well. Im still skeptical about chozo waiting so long before revealing the existence of Metroids to other elders (just before Space Pirates attack), but i guess they were not sure if it was a good idea and so they waited. Thank you for answering!
Good dissection of the first two films. Those shirt designs are awesome. I have a friend who would kill for a Kanden design, so if you made one you can count on at least one sale :P
There is one per hunter, so yes Kanden has a shirt (there are more designs available at the store) also thanks for watching I hope you enjoyed the video
If we were to list every game, book, movie or other piece of media that was inspired by or otherwise references Alien/Aliens, we would be here until the sun goes supernova.
Actually, it's more likely that the Xenomorph is the inspiration for the Chozo lifeforms rather than Ridley, at least physically. Look at the Chozo statues in Super Metroid, they look almost identical in design to classic Xenomorphs: long arms and legs with long, curved heads and they're always drooling/dripping liquid.
@@robertkenny1201 Like I said, I think the reason why Metroid hasn't made it to the big screen is because Metroid is too similar to Alien to the point it looks more like a copy. It would be immediately compared to Alien, it wouldn't sell well. Maybe an anime versión would be safer for the title.
Hey Orpheon! Ok first of all love your new video I’ll buy more of your merchandise soon. Second, do you have any idea of how to get the two bonus maps on Metroid Prime 2 Echos? Btw I’m already at Sanctuary Fortress

Ive made drawing of the chozo statue and featured in another video. As for the other characters you mentioned the problem being the difficulty of the drawing for the amount of times I would use the character in the videos. I can re-use Samus ‘emotes’ more than day Omega Pirate or Quadraxis chibi. For those i have made other drawings to animate for future topics which dont win any of the polls

Yeessss, new Orph!
Was wondering when this topic would pop up, glad to see it covered finally!
Hope you enjoyed it, already working on the new videos
I have another theory that might have served as inspiration for Samus Visor, and perhaps im the only one who noticed it. If you look carefully at the “Alien” poster with the Egg, the Egg Hatch that shines in greens has a similar shape to samus Visor. It looks even more alike with Dark Samus Visor/Face or the Re-design Visor on Samus Returns, but it resembles the same shape. Also, Samus visor is green color. The same color on the Egg Hatch on the poster.
After u see this, u will never unsee it and it will blow your mind for all the years passed unoticed 😅
Love this video because for my game i was inspired by both metroid and alien maybe this is why. The similarities
What game would that be?
@@Ray_2112 Oh right, I totally forgot about that game, I'll definitely add this to my list of what I play next ^^
You do have some awesome, super detailed videos here Orpheon. Awesome work mate. And yes I do love the the inspiration this series took, didn't know it was that deep though
Thanks a lot, your compliment means a lot. I just want to give you the best videos that my skills/time/budget allows and I hope i can continue to entertain you. Thanks for watching
@@TheOrpheon You achieved it here, and probably will again
It’s my head cannon, aliens (alien II) is the Metroid movie we’ll never get
And to be honest, Im fine with that. Better than getting a movie that will not do the franchise justice
I was recently finally able to watch all Alien movies and yeah it is really apparent how Metroid took inspiration from it, in a good way ofc.
Apart from those you mentioned, I would like also to point a couple other out:
Metroid OtherM also has many plot similarities to Aliens, with Samus joining as an outsider a group of marines with a deleter in them to explore a mysterious situation that triggers the protagonist's PTSD, Newt is also kind of like the Baby (or it should be the other way around), and not to mention the Ferrocrusher boss being basically a buffed up version of the robo suit Ripley worn at the end of Aliens.
I loved it and later on I bought the Prime games and even later in 2020 I got a SNES and bought Metroid 2 and Super Metroid and now waiting here for Prime 4.
always great to see you upload
Hope you enjoyed it
When i used to have a nes, my favorite game was Metroid, and when i had a snes, my favorite was super metroid. I always loved playing those games, and everything about them but i never thought of why until i found out about all the references to the Alien movies! I was always a big fan of the Alien movies!
Mega man battle network music? Or is that star force? The theme that plays at about 3:10 is from mmbn 4.
I used music from mmbn 4-5-6 and Starforce 3. They are my go-to OSTs
I looked at your stickers, and I think it would be adorable if you made a Halloween Samus sticker. Samus in a Ridley costume really made my day when I first saw it.
I have them available on Halloween, since they didn't really sell outside the holiday
@@TheOrpheon Thank you!
Metroid is basically a Alien video game without the license characters and aliens
Aight imma head out and play metroid prime 3
Metroid Fusion actually looks pretty similar to Alien 3 and Resurrection plot and atmosphere wise. Besides, the X Parasites and the Things from the John Carpenter film have some intense similarities.
Stay safe Orpheon, love your content and your designs 😃☺️
I am safe and already working on the next video, hope you look forward to it
Seeing as Alien is one of my favorite movies, I saw the parallels between Alien and Metroid. So cool that it was inspired by the Alien movies.
I swear every time an alien movie is announced / comes out a Metroid game does likewise
YOU THOUGHT I WAS GONNA HUG YOUR FACE?
me- Yes?
it's always been my dream for Samus to fight Xenomorphs.
You used bomberman hero music for your background, thought we didn't notice, but we did
Now that is a nod to an entirely different franchise 😂
I love Bomberboi... and I miss him. Good thing he is in Smash :D
Ridley is named after Ridley Scott
And mother brain is named after the computer in the ship in alien
Ya know, there was a Wii game called Alien: Isolation that was pretty much a reskin of Metroid: Other M
It has the automatic doors and the same flat map, the upgrade-based puzzle solving, and the save stations that restore your ammo
Yeah, see, this is what I was talking about with Unlimited Lives when he was doing a video of Star Trek Voyager Season 3 Episode Whatever "Macrocosm" ... He pulled out the Ellen Ripley comparison. I pulled out the Samus Aran comparison. And he was all like "yeah... the morph ball would have made it easier to move through the Jeffries Tubes."
Which honestly leads me to think someone should do a mod of one of the Prime games (or maybe OtherM) that's basically that episode, played from Captain Janeway's perspective, with Metroid Prime-type mechanics, but Star Trek Voyager-type aesthetics, equipment, and so on.
So for us to get more Metroid games, we need to get more Alien movies? Quick! Someone go fund a brand new Alien!!!
Yep, no Metroid 5 before Alien 5.
Those new shirt got me! I've been debating on getting one and the new designs won me over!!! I LOVE THESE SHIRTS!
Hope you enjoy them and thanks for considering buying them. I have more designs available on the Redbubble page
(Aliens spoiler) Ripley survives with the help of a robot Samus in fusion survives with the help of a robot. I thought that was worth mentioning.
Love how you dressed Crocomire as Bob Ross
Nice video man, thanks for the upload. I needed a Metroid media injection.
I'll get some prints when my next paycheck comes in. You've got an impressive style man.
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for considering buying some merch. I hope you enjoy it
As Critical Kate has shown the influence of Space Cobra on Metroid, it would be interesting to reevalueate the Alien aspects of it.
Every time I see Orpheon Crocomire, In-game Crocomire's death becomes more troubling.
Well you dont have to kill him to beat the game, if you are skilled enough
Solid analysis! It’s really cool to see the respect shown from one massive series to another. Also, love the BN BGM, but the BN4 BGM still gives me nightmares due to all the replays, lol
Yeah I feel you, having to replay the game 3 times to get all the soul unisons was annoying
0:19 I do it all day
What a perfectly timed release, loved the video! Happy Alien Day, sir!
Your version of Crocomire is such an adorable treat.
Glad to hear, he is my favorite character to animate
@@TheOrpheon you definitely gave him so much personality than the game actually did.
Video idea: Every Metroid in Metroid Series. Every stage, mutation, and specimen we saw and/or killed.
I dont quite get the idea, care lo elaborate?
@@TheOrpheon You know, a few words on their basic stages and/or mutations like Super Metroid or Metroid Prime. Their Abilities, physical form, where they were ecountered & their fate.
I love old games for the simplicity of controls. It lets me lose myself in the game when I have like three buttons
Ripley's escape ship sorta looks like Samus' ship.
@@TheOrpheon Oh. Didn't even look. Thanks.
It could be super cool if you make Samus with the lightsuit on your artwork!
I mean metroid fusion and alien resurrection had so many similarities
If we were to list every game, book, movie or other piece of media that was inspired by or otherwise references Alien/Aliens, we would be here until the sun goes supernova.
Corporate wants you to spot the differences between these two pictures.
They're the same Picture
The music... Is that rocket, robot on wheels?
I know in late but I just wanna let you know that I love...that Bob Ross Crocomire, I'm gonna protect him with my life, please don't melt him.
Another awesome vid
Actually, it's more likely that the Xenomorph is the inspiration for the Chozo lifeforms rather than Ridley, at least physically. Look at the Chozo statues in Super Metroid, they look almost identical in design to classic Xenomorphs: long arms and legs with long, curved heads and they're always drooling/dripping liquid.
LV426 wasn’t the aliens’ home moon. They crashed there in the derelict ship.
It's taken me a year and a half but I didn't forget! I just watched the movies so here I am to watch the video.
Metroid > Alien
*eats* *popcorn*
omg Crocomire Bob Ross is so cute!
In the 2000s there were attempts to make a Metroid movie but they never went though with it.
Maybe because Metroid is too similar to Alien.
@@ijansk Well I think Metroid desrves a new adaptation of some kind.
@@ijansk I'm thinking something more on the line of a comic book series.
Hey Orpheon! Ok first of all love your new video I’ll buy more of your merchandise soon. Second, do you have any idea of how to get the two bonus maps on Metroid Prime 2 Echos? Btw I’m already at Sanctuary Fortress
Hello, first of thanks considering buying the merch and I hope you enjoy it as much as the videos. Second, thats weird, last I remember you get the maps after completing Torvus and Sanctuary sections of the game. Perhaps its a post-game unlock? Im not sure if its something that changes between gamecube and wii versions. Third, in case you havent watched it, I made a video on Prime 2 multiplayer I think you might enjoy
Recently when I was in sanctuary fortress I got a achievement for having 40% of my logbook filled. Maybe you have to get 100% on logbook entries. Or I could be totally wrong
Metroid is my favorite Nintendo character ! He is such a cool gentleman robot 😍
Yep, he really is....😉
My favorite Metroid game is the NES console and Samus Aran is the first woman to be a Bounty hunter
If I may make a suggestion for your art, why don’t you try drawing some of the more overlooked characters in metroid like the omega pirate, quadraxis, that one chozo statue in prime where you go morph ball and he flings you along a rail etc. I’ve been playing prime 1 on hyper mode to get 100% so that’s where my ideas came from.
Aliens is my favorite movie of all time
Before I was introduced to Metroid (Fusion was my first) I played Aliens: Infestation on the DS. Its Hands down the best DS game I have played. Have you played this game?
The perma-death metroidvania, right? Looks good
Yeah I played it and enjoyed it a lot
@@TheOrpheon I pretty much got into Metroid Because of that game 😂 and thx for the video!
Have you considered doing a video going over the game we never got, Metroid Prime 1.5?
Metroid Prime 1.5?
@@TheOrpheon it was a game idea that was pitched by someone who did work on Prime 1 and ended up serving as the basis for Prime 2
Never heard of it
@@TheOrpheon Regardless if you would do a video or not I'd recommend looking into it. It would have been an interesting game to say the least, haha
Alien more like Gailien
Kill me
Metroid is just alien but better simple as that
Ranking videogame over movie...yeah, makes sense
@@Ray_2112 Makes perfect sense
Extendable tongues do tend to invite law suits.
Did he make the cute metroid characters?
Crocomorph is now canon on this channel
You mean Crocoburster?
We prefer the term "Croco-hugger" cause he likes to give hugs
@@TheOrpheon That makes sense - such a lovely little creature!
