Finally, someone gets it! I can't tell you how many times I have tried to explain this to people, including those who work at shelters that are adopting out the wrong dog (breed) to families. They still don't listen. Thank you for doing this video. Shared.🐾
they are in shelters for a reason...do NOT adopt these vicious dogs. One elderly lady took a dog from a grandson to keep it for a while. Her husband went to the back yard and found her eaten. Do beagles eat people? How about Welsh Corgis. Pit Bulls cannot be domesticated. They are more of a threat than a timber wolf.
As a Pit Bull type dog owner I want to thank you for being realistic and honest. Not everyone should own a Shepherd Type, not everyone should own a Pit Bull type etc. People need to set their ego and emotions aside and be real with what is a good fit for them and their environment and what level of interaction and training they are realistically capable of. There are breed specific behaviors 100% and some people are incapable of dealing with them. These animals are no joke and people need a reality check.
Yep. Can't love genetics away, you have to understand what you're getting and manage them accordingly. -- I got a Corso a year ago and knew I really had to level up if I wanted this breed. (which I certainly have) She's great and so easy to train. But if you don't understand that territory is Everything to this breed you're likely to have a disaster on your hands.
Here's the problem, zero mistake dog. Don't leave the door open, don't leave the window down on the car where it can jump out, keep focused when walking it on a leash, on and on. All people make mistakes and that's when others get killed.

No such thing as pitbull type. Pitbull is a breed. Pitbull type dog means you have a mixed dog not a breed. Real pitbull are purebred with bloodlines and pedigree

Not all shelters are bad, not by a long shot. They take in the pets that have been abused, starved, neglected by some of the disgusting public. If it weren’t for the shelters, these dogs would have zero chance.

go take basic dog obedience classes... basic training is NOT taken by dog owners in most all cases. I have lived it for 25-30 years and took basic, intermediate and advanced classes as well as CGC certification for 3 of my dogs ... they are 'lower animals' ... not part of your family.
Such a sad story. Awesome podcast. Sadly people get dogs they can't handle. I currently have a Malinois and raised Dobermans for over 30 years and trained all my dogs to respect the children in my household. I still NEVER left them alone with children and their training went on for their lifetime. It was never one and done. In a perfect storm situation, even a well trained dog can be triggered.
Absolutely...... when you have small kids in the home and medium to large dogs. They should always always always be watched. Even if you have had him for 9 weeks and he has grown up with the child.
I respect you so much. A couple of years ago you gave me some very tough advice regarding my Mal (then) puppy and my little boy that really pushed me to train the dog how he needed to be trained. If you had not been as blunt about it, I don’t think I would have realized how precarious of a situation it was. Fortunately, you were blunt and it startled me into diving into training him with the help of a Mal experienced trainer. So, thank you for being the way you are because it really helped us out a lot. He isn’t a perfect dog but I understand him and his body language. He has great recall and listens 99% of the time. Your advice did that for us.

If everyone in the family can manage the family dog every other human/ beast will be ok because the dog is managed responsibly all the time. I see families where one family member can handle the dog but everyone else can't and that leaves a big window of opportunity for something bad to happen when that one person is away. Also, sometimes the one who can handle the dog is in denial when the other members complain about not being able to control the dog on their own
People also need to absolutely stop making children responsible for dogs. It's ok to have them help, but if you bring a dog into your home, you as the adult need to be the primary care taker. I was at the park yesterday with my puppy. She's 12 weeks and we are working on socialization. The park was unusually busy and we were hanging back trying to keep her away from all the commotion allowing her to adjust and settle. But it became apparent we needed to leave. As I'm telling my son we have to go, some kid (Maybe 10?) Walks up with her pocket bully on a leash. But she let her dog get right in my dogs face. Fortunately Ivy stayed chill, but I could tell she wasn't happy about it. And she started to jump for him. I picked her up and walked away and told the kid to not let her dog approach anyone or any dog without permission. Had she not been a kid I'd have gone off. My dog is a Corso, had she been bigger her dog could have gotten hurt. I wad like where is your mother/father and why do they think its ok for a kid to walk a dog in a park full of kids. Bad idea
I am so glad you are shedding light on the rampant spread of micro bullies and other bully breeds they are trying to market as pure bred. They have no function, and are pure aesthetic. They are bred without concern to pedigree, temperament, and confirmation.
The dogs look uncomfortable. Their pain level must be very high. They can't breathe. Is this not why they get fractious. Humans who have malformed bodies deformed snouts etc. Get grumpy. Breeding is the trouble.
I respected you to begin with but after this sincere and courageous podcast, Robert, I absolutely love you. You will take heat over it but you have the integrity and heart to say it. I am a trainer with more than 50 years experience with reactive dogs and the silliness of dog saviors has to stop.
When I was growing up we had a pitbull. He was a great dog. One day he growled at my brother who was two. He did not see the next meal at our house. We took him to the vet who had expressed he just loved him and if we ever needed to rehome, he would take him. The man had some foresight. Fast forward i adopted a lab mix from the shelter. Later i found she had been a return. She was fearful and was agressive anytime another dog barked at her, came home snd twice tore up my older dog. One morning, she woke up and went nuts again, unprovoked, I got bitten, the other dog was bitten. That was it. We euthanized her that day. The vet later told me he had been scared of her.....why did he stay silent? This has been a great talk and i so wish more trainers would be this open and honest.
It is not helpful to use the word "aggressive", they likely weren't aggressive at all. People then think they are in the clear as long as their dogs aren't "aggressive", not many dogs show themselves to be aggressive. The reason pitbulls and similar dogs end up in headlines is simply because they are "capable", when something happens and they attack- whether they are triggered to be predatory or feel threatened and turn defensive or whatever (which absolutely any dog can), they make headlines because the damage that follows is significant. Calling them aggressive just totally misses the point, I'm sure they were not.
I really appreciate what you are doing here. As a delivery driver, I see it all the time, and the most stressful part of my job is risking my life and limb to serve these people who have no idea how to properly handle their animals.

Our rescue told us our dog was a boxer/hound mix(we have owned a boxer in the past) we knew what we were in for. No boxer in our dog, she ended up being a pit/chow mix. We had planned on having a trainer anyways when she hit 5months but we ended up having the trainer coming sooner. She has structure, boundaries etc. I was taught to pay close attention to her body language etc. thank you for speaking on this! It is so needed.

Unfortunately, the parents were staunch pitbull advocates and bought the two pits as puppies. Recently I've discovered there are tons of poorly bred, aggressive pitbulls in my apartment complex and their owners got around the breed restrictions and pet rent by claiming they're service dogs. People are dangerously dumb.
Aleast someone has the balls to state the facts it's about time. Any dog can be dangerous its a predator. I love all breeds but some should stick to what they we built for. I wouldn't make a dog sled team of 8 Chihuahuas is not their purpose. Terriers kill things it's the design. Bull dogs don't back down for bulls,boar, and bear. Mix the 2 and it's a sh*t show
I so agree with ya, bro. I know my CC is very dangerous. Though she is perfect for my gf and me. I don't 4 a second think a stranger or others she is unfamiliar with are safe. 750 psi of bite force is extremely dangerous in itself. She can kill in seconds. Plus, she has been nonething but loyal and affectionate w/us. I still don't trust her completely, period.
It’s actually not true that they were guilted into getting the pitbulls. Although you’re right that is the most likely scenario, especially considering shelters these days. But the father actually got them from a breeder as puppies, and seemed to enjoy the aggressive characteristics, calling them “house lions”. He spoke out against breed specific legislation, and was seemingly very naive about it. He just didn’t think they would attack his family. But they did.
If people became liable for their dogs actions you would see pitbull ownership decline to zero, people know these dogs are dangerous and kill people and peoples pets even if they don't admit it outloud and the statistics are undeniable. Everywhere pitbulls are banned dog bites and deaths are dramatically lower on a statistically large level.

Robert you are absolutely correct and I say that as a pit bull owner. Thank you, it is so important that these dogs go to homes that understand what care and training they require. I love all dogs but I never ever trusted any dog (and I have had many) to be alone with my children or my grandchildren
That's exactly how it should be ! When I was a kid, my grandfather had pitbulls and ALLLL I wanted to do was stay outside & play with them or bring them out for walks one at a time. My gram NEVER allowed me to go out in that yard alone. And anytime I was out there, my grandfather had a gun ready.. I never understood it when I was a kid. The dogs were completely friendly, loved me and "I" never even thought about one of them attacking me.. After growing up around so many different dogs though, I understand now.. no matter what, you never know what a dog may decide to do at any given time.. All I would have taken was one of those dogs being in a bad mood, maybe pissed off at another dog it couldn't get to & decide to grab me instead. Because it's going to release that energy/aggression SOMEHOW. For the record though, I've still never been attacked or bitten by ANY pitbulls !! I've had nothing but good experiences, aside from a few dog scraps here & there. But too many people have had horrible experiences with them because of lousy owner's..

And those pitbull types, that are EASILY identifiable, are responsible for almost 70% of all human deaths, which is why I find their apologists so irritating. I worked for specialty, emergency hospitals and Animal Control as a licensed veterinary technician. My career spanned close to 20 years, and I have worked with almost every breed at some point. We need to be able to evaluate a dog’s behavior in 5 min or less; especially shelter dogs where we had to walk out to the kennels take them out of their runs with no assistance and bring them in to see the veterinarian. There are breed traits, which can also be exacerbated by being in a shelter or hospital environment. I have seen veterinarians and veterinary staff attacked. I have also seen COUNTLESS dog attacks by all breeds, seen COUNTLESS dogs die from dog attacks, and have seen owners who have been attacked from trying to break up fights especially at dog parks. I have also seen an owner who was a “repeat offender” ( a cop) who owned FIVE female pits who always fought. He brought in three the first time and two weeks later he brought just two and had pepper sprayed them to stop the fight, and we had to take care of them after being pepper sprayed. So breed traits and behavior IS REAL, and it can be very dangerous.
I agree. No dog should be left unsupervised with little kids, no matter what breed. I recently saw a video where they showed a toddler hitting the dog in the face to demonstrate how good their pitbull was with little ones. They are actually training the dog and kid for an attack.

STOP victim blaming ! HERE is the difference between a pit bull attack and other dog attacks. The average dog will stop when reprimanded. Pits are relentless once they choose their target. It’s not jaw strength. It’s about their relentless explosive attacks that don’t stop until they kill it or they are killed. It’s called gameness. It’s what Pits were bred to do. Get a book and read up so you can stop embarrassing yourself. Pit bulls do not lock their jaws, but due to their "gameness" trait, they rather die than to let go. This trait ensures success in the dog-fighting ring. They have a wide jaw structure (it appears they are smiling) and are able to breath/pant while hanging onto their victim's flesh; to ultimately wear down their opponents. The panting allows pit bulls not to overheat so their chances of "winning" during the fight increases. These pit bull breed traits supersede any other dog breeds' bite pressure.

Pit Bull Rescue Central recommends ALL pit bull owners to have a "break stick", a wedge-shaped piece of wood used to pry open a pit bull’s jaw during an attack. "Since pit bulls have a strong fighting background, we recommend that pet owners also have a breaking stick as a precaution." When you need a precautionary tool for your dog, it's not a safe family pet.

Let's start with getting your language correct. Under the law you are the OWNER of a dog and legally responsible as such. We are NOT pet parents and they are NOT fur babies. They are a dog, an animal with instincts & behaviors that need to be shaped,trained and controlled to live safely in conjunction with us.
I am so so glad that you are taking this approach. Families with young children should not have these kinds of dogs. Even if the dog is well trained, it is still a dog, and it isn't just the big dogs. There are many dog breeds, especially nervous terriers that will be problematic with children. The people that disagree are the people that say, I buy my dog all of these toys, but once he gets the squeaker out, he won't play with it anymore. Do they even understand why a squeak toy is so popular? No. Unless they have rat dogs and live on farm. If they watched just one video about rat dogs in action, they would see the dog pick up a rat, shake it, and it squeaks like a toy. And then, you'll see two dogs pulling a rat apart, and playing tug of war, and you'll understand why the rope toy is popular. But when we saw dogs doing this kind of behavior, we think it's cute and funny. Unfortunately, these behaviors are hardwired: certain breeds more than others. But if you have very young children squealing and laughing or crying, that can sound like a prey animal to a dog; like a rat, or a rabbit. My friend many years ago used to babysit for a family with a large do, and a 3 year old. One weekend when she wasn't babysitting, the dog attacked and mauled the year old. The child lived, but basically needed facial reconstruction, over 100 stitches. The father killed the dog; but it was this same situation; if you take a large dog with a very powerful bite and mix it with terrier, it isn't safe around a baby, no matter. I totally agree with you about training, and long leads. I usually have shepherds or sheepdogs. My last and current dogs are Shelties. I think a Sheltie is also a good bet for a family dog. I've seen my previous dog do absolutely nothing, when my toddler used his back to pull himself up. The only problem this dog has around children, is that he will herd them. Poodles are a good, I grew up with one. But they can be highstrung. I would never have another one.
As someone looking in from the outside (I volunteer in cat rescue), I find it hard to understand why people who claim to "love dogs" continue to defend dogs that are notorious for their aggression towards other dogs, often killing them or inflicting terrible injuries on them.
I got bit when I was 10 yrs old, wasn't a pit bull, it was a shepherd mix. 365 stitches, many trips to plastic surgeon. If I learned anything from that day, is don't trust any animal. Never put your hand near it, or your face. I don't care if its your dog or not, or that you think you know the dog well. The dog that bit me I had been feeding all summer long while its owners were away on vacation. I almost lost my right eye to a dog I thought I knew. Thank you for information, and taking the time to teach stuff I found very helpful.

My Rescue Mals were reactive to other dogs. Positive training wasn't helping. Then I was injured in front of them.and they became reactive to people. 3 weeks with an Afghan war Vet dog trainer. They became the best behaved Dogs at Any of the Dog Park We visit. Why? E Collar and training me how to be the Boss.

If your kid bites people at school every day are you going to teach him to stop by using candy and giving zero discipline or punishment? lmao. Such a brain dead way to train anything. You positively reinforce good behavior and you negatively reinforce bad behavior. Common sense. It takes a tiny amount of negative reinforcement to train a dog. It's not as if you have to beat the dog or anything like that.
I totally respect you and your wisdom about canine behavior. You are genuine and truthful about your topics on dogs. I tell people you need to look at what the dog is bred for first and foremost. Recognizing these type of behaviors around children or in any situation is crucial if there is innate aggression or fear present. Since I've started amateur dog training, I've had multiple people tell me about being bitten (some losing fingers) by thier own dogs. 90% were a pitbull or mix. The owners are ashamed to admit that their loved dogs bite family! And most keep them!
Numbers don’t lie!! Why do pitbulls kill or maim so much more than other large, dangerous breeds? Because it’s what they were biologically selected to do. As I said in another comment, it’s not fair to the dogs. It’s like not letting a bird fly; it’s an innate, biological drive that WE created in them. And what outlet can we possibly give them to allow them to exhibit those behaviors in a safe way?? People need to face reality here. I’m sure there are responsible owners who would be capable of keeping well-bred pits, but those people and those dogs are few and far between. Something has got to give.

I'm 56 and I have been a trainer all my adult life and for the last 16yrs I have trained exclusively Pitbull's and Bully's and I am here to tell you Robert is on point. I have 9 in my home right now. they have never bitten anyone but I also don't let them be around children. When I take one to town with me my 39 yr old son and I have eyes on them at all times and NO you can't pet my dog! just like you can't touch me or my son.
@@llars1559. That answer is disingenuous. Any dog can be triggered, any day it can be unattended for a moment, just enough for it to get loose. Slip the collar, break the leash. Someone’s loose dog can approach yours. Every disaster that ever happened had the exact same answer. My dog NEVER did that! It’s was a slip up! I wasn’t paying attention for a second. The best solution is to simply not have land sharks. If you insist on having them it’s your ego bursting out. There are thousands of great nice dogs. No one needs bullies. They just don’t.
I had a beautiful bullmastiff who had great training, loved people, and loved dogs. Then, she would see a small child and a prey drive like no other would rear it's face. Serious prey drift. Horrible situation that no correction or training could help. It was always there. We had to euthanize her. Broke me but had to be done. You could have a "great dog" but then there's an underlying instinct hiding. You are %100 Robert. Look for the signs, be intouch with reality, and understand that it's a dog with animal instincts. Bad breeding hides behaviors, traits, and instinct drives. Robert, your great videos and training walked me through my ptsd over this. Thank you.
We had family members that had a similar experience with their 2nd or 3rd bull mastiff. Animal had a screw loose and they and the breeder agreed it was best to put her down.
I have a question ⁉️ do you think that a malinois work for emotional support or other type support dog? There is no small children in house hold, nor small animals.
If my staffie (50%) shows dog dog aggression but doesn’t really show people aggression, is that ok being around my kid? He’s been very good around my baby and we always keep space . Have another kid on the way but now Over the weekend he had an incident at the pet hotel. He was lunging at another dog while they were taking him back to his room and then turned and reacted and bit the pet hotel handler He was just reacting to the correction during a close quarters dog dog interaction It wasn’t a severe bite (a little blood and some bruising they said) I think he’s a good dog I don’t know anymore
Thank you! I was screaming inside my head & fighting the urge to interact with people making dumb comments the first time I read about this. I 100% agree. NO WAY there was “no sign” of any problem or aggression. Just no way. Dogs don’t just attack with no warning. These people just either couldn’t or wouldn’t see the reality of their dogs behavior issues &/or temperament. Working in the doggy daycare industry I found one of the biggest issues with dog owners is people are delusional (or just not being honest with themselves) about the reality of their dogs behavior issues &/or temperament. There are also way too many people out there with dogs they simply cannot handle. Too big, too powerful, too high energy, too stubborn, etc. I also volunteered at a no kill shelter taking the dogs for “walks” (they were actually really hikes) before I started working in the dog daycare industry. 90% of the dogs up for adoption were what would be considered a pit bull, back then. It’s probably still similar. And what you’re talking about isn’t actual service dogs, they call them “emotional support animals”. Actual service dogs & the people who rely on them have their lives made more difficult by these fake service dogs. Very few dogs have the right temperament to be a real service dog. Emotional support animals have a vest & a bought BS certificate. That’s it’s. If you can’t get on a plane without your cat, maybe flying isn’t for you. If you can’t travel without your mini pony, maybe being a member of society isn’t for you.
I was hoping you would do a video on that incident. I wanted badly to hear what you had to say about it. Its been bothering me tremendously ever since I heard about the incident. Thank you for this Robert. It brought tears to my eyes and you covered a lot of important points. Made me think a bit more and question some things I never really thought of before and you helped me make a decision Ive been stewing on for several months now. Thank you again and I hope that this video helps to wake some people up that have certain dogs that really dont belong in the homes they are in. Thank you for your honesty and willingness to talk about difficult topics like violent dogs and fighting lines and game lines mixed into some pit bull dogs and shelter dogs. My husband and I have adopted both an English Bulldog and an American Bulldog from foster situations BEFORE we moved to be near our young grandchildren. Our dogs were much older senior in fact and we were very, very careful to keep the dogs closely supervised and the grandchildren safe. When the two dogs passed on we decided to purchase a puppy from a breeder. We did a lot of homework to select a good breeder and looked for health and soundness as our top criteria. We chose a Rough Coated Collie, like Lassie. We chose a dog breed that was intelligent, gentle and loyal and very sweet natured. The dog is a true joy and a great friend with the grandkids.We have learned so much from listening to your program.
THANK YOU for being honest about breed specific dangers. Rescues, shelters and advocates for these problem breeds need to wake up and become responsible humans.
I adopted a rescued GSD mix “puppy” and the prey drive was high! I have a small child and she lunged and snapped at him repeatedly when I tried to take her for a walk. She didn’t even look at him before turning and lunging at him. She bit me repeatedly, twice with enough pressure to bruise. The trainer, animal control, and vet all told me to send her back or put her down. The rescue tried so hard to make me keep her, but i stood firm. The rescue took her back, but I made sure to let them know her bite history, high prey drive, and behavior risk.
Yup, I have a bully/cattle mix rescue. Two high prey drive dogs in one small package. I trained and trained, trained ( and still training ) she is amazing now. As you said, I do not trust her 100%. Your straight forward truth is a breath of fresh air. Thank you.

It was my good fortune to find Robert Cabral's videos after watching so many other you tube dog training videos. I am using his technique, great technique to train my puppy. Puppy girl is smart, wonderful, large breed dog. She & I work together every day, religiously. Puppy has a great time learning & I, a great time teaching her. Both puppy girl & I got so lucky when I found Robert Cabral. @@damaristighe3227 My girl is a rescue, harsh times prior to my rescuing her & she is plagued by stress reactions due to prior abuses. Her DNA test revealed Malinois, German shepherd, St. Bernard & husky as her breed combo. Puppy is quite active, has considerable prey drive, while eager to learn, smart & quite beautiful in appearance. Big working puppy. With the right balance of good, consistent training, as offered on this channel, she is recovering, learning to trust & making excellent progress toward our living our best lives together.
I was sitting on a bench in the foyer of my vet's office a few years ago...my cat was silent, in a hard plastic carrier next to me. A woman and little boy age 4(?) entered the clinic with a lovely tan & white female pit mix on leash. Their dog was alert, quiet but calm, and well-behaved....sat by the lady's side as she talked to the receptionist. I was people and critter-watching.... Suddenly, I saw a total change in body posture of the pretty pit mix, she locked her eyes and whole focus on the cat carrier next to me. My old cat hadn't meowed or anything.... I think the dog just caught his scent....really mind boggling, she was now animated and straining at the leash. I moved the carrier slowly farther away and braced myself....luckily, the dog was taken to the back by staff. If the owner's little boy picked up a neighbor's cat near that dog, I don't want to think what would happen. As a lifelong animal handler, it was one of the most disturbing body language shifts I ever saw...
Why did a couple with 2 smLl children want two fighting dogs. Surely 2 soft dogs would've been best. I don't think dogs should be introduced into any family until both kids ate over 7 yrs old. A dog never exceeds human mental age of 7. I saw a totally stressed rescue mastiff with a woman with a baby. She'd put it on a nose torture device. I said. That dogs face is full of anxiety and pain. She said. Well now the baby was born I need it to not pull me. Poor dog. Baby and mama are now here. I was amazed a pregnant couple adopted a huge strong dog. Why. When baby arrives is dog really wanted. So sad. They're not accessories.
Robert, great live show explaining the real reality of different types of dogs and especially if children are present. Everyone should be cautious with dog breeds with high drive. Too many people are so naive about selecting a dog breed for their home. What you are saying is very correct.

As a person who Hog Hunts with Catahoula, pits and Black mouth curs the prey drive is so ingrained in them its insane. With out a job they will rebel. Great video.

Retired LEO K9 handler, and EDD handler in Iraq. I have been so sick over this attack since I heard about it. I absolutely agree that pit bulls do not belong in a house with kids. Period. I’ve heard the “breed” comments, and my answer is yes, all dogs have the ability to bite, even attack. However, the pits have the strength and aggression to literally rip people apart. I love dogs and would never have a pit.
Thank you for your service. When I was in the Air Force, I had a friend who was a dog handler. He told me there was a reason that pitbulls were not used. He also mentioned that their unpredictable nature made them too much of a liability. Like in this awful case😞
I’ve been sick over it as well. I literally lost sleep the night I heard of it. These dogs should be banned, unless with a permit. They do not belong with a family. It’s a heartbreaking tragedy that should not have been legally allowed. I’m so tired of children being mauled to death by this breed. But it’s not just children- it’s vulnerable adults as well. Men in their prime have been mauled to death while having a seizure multiple times in the past year. Older adults have been torn to shreds. Innocent bystanders die all the time. They shouldn’t be allowed.
@@coch2370 my best friends step-mother was mauled to death by one of these “sweet pibbles”. The dog had been in the family for a couple of years. They are too unpredictable and vicious in their attacks to be family pets!
Great video. So true. Your advice if taken, will save so many dogs and kids from potentially dangerous situations. When my son was little, the dogs that worried me most, were the ones that had an owner saying don't worry about their child loving dog. I always thought those people were insane not to realize a dog is a dog. I trust exactly no dog completely around young kids. Btw, I am not an inexperienced dog owner. I have had and been around dogs my whole life without traning issues. However, my current dogs have been quite challenging to train. I was attacked by 2 pit bulls on 13th May 2024. They tried to kill my little JRT too. I will live my life time and never forget it. It’s really changed my life. The woman walking them was badly hurt too. I’m still so angry. Fractured wrist, scarring etc. Just a woman on her own with her little dog set upon by 2 bullies. So sick of this narrative about it being the owners. The lady didn’t attack me!!!!

More people should be passing this information along... It's too bad there are dog owners that are in denial... My daughter was/is one... She wouldn't listen to me, despite my experience with military and law enforcement K9's.... Now, their loving first dog is dead, an injured family member is lucky to be alive, and her Akita that she let do whatever it wanted, no training except basic obedience when it was young, was euthanized... We ALL tried to warn her about the negative traits of an Akita, and having a powerful dog like that with kids, and needing daily training, but all she saw was the famous dog in Japan that waited for it's owner (that died of a heart attack) at the train station until it died...
Grew up with an Akita GSD Timber Wolf cross who everyone said would be aggressive and not good with kids. He definitely needed strong leadership but he was awesome with us kids and farm animals. Knowing what I know now? We got really lucky and I was also very lucky with my other two GSD crosses. I suppose my overconfidence in my connection with animals worked out but it very well could have worked out differently. So sad for people who get a dog who is too much dog for them. I still have a soft spot for Akita’s GSD and wolf crosses. Luckily they don’t breed wolves and dogs much anymore. Not fair to the animals to experiment like that.
My brother's children were raised with a male Akita. His youngest was three years old. I have seen her push and shove him out of her room. He would never hurt her. She was never left alone with him but they were raised together. I only met the dog as an adult and my brother left him with me all the time. My elderly mother lived with him and the dog never bothered him. My brother did not let him do whatever he wanted. He is strict with dogs. His Akita liked hanging out with the children. He would get excited when they came home from school. It is sad your family had that experience. Akita's require a firm hand.

My daughter had pits. I was afraid of him. But he was a well trained dog. I had to learn how to handle him. Agree with a dog with kids in the house. You just can’t leave them alone with them. People need this education. This is my second time watching. Learning so much. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I am a game hunter. i just want people to know that when we have game hunting Pitbulls or any other game breeds any of the dogs that show dog to dog aggression we put them down. they are not part of the standard. in game hunting dogs need to be focused on the game. dogs must have the mentality to work together regardless of the environment not against each other. we also have strict rules and managemental skills in living with game dogs. we never ever send these dogs to non game homes or people with kids. however there are many irresponsible people in gaming hunting all they do is breed take what they want they sell the rest of puppies as they call them useless. god knows where these potentially dangerous puppies go. as for me puppies that dont make the cut we humanely put them down not sell them cheaply to the public knowing the future issues of these pups.
Correct me if I’m wrong but as soon as you select any non game trait such as dog aggression , you will lose the game trait. That’s way the best game APBT run tight lines and only select for game .

This is the best, most informative info I’ve heard about the dangers of this class of dogs. I think this should be required listening for families before they go out to adopt! These dogs need to stay in trained hands who know what to watch for- for the safety of families and the wellbeing of the dog.
I have been training dogs, horses, or both for over 50 years (yes, I am old, LOL). I have always used 95 % positive training methods but I also know there have to be corrections and consequences. I SO appreciate your perspective and common sense. I completely agree with everything you say. I have been preaching the fact that Pitties are hard-wired, genetically predisposed to fight. One of my clients had 5-year-old Am Staff that would no longer allow him on his bed! Good grief! Thank you for so much, very well-done information. Keep up the good work.
This is one of the many reasons why I don't adopt from shelters and never will. Not only do they try to trick you into buying a pit bull, but they often gloss over behavioral issues. If buying from a good breeder makes me immoral, so be it. I would much rather keep myself and my family safe with our cute and loving pomeranian we got from a breeder than having shelters try selling me a potentially dangerous animal.
I have always adopted from animal shelters and have found the best dogs. People think that shelters only have dogs filled with pit bull types or other dangerous breeds. That's a myth or huge misconception. People relinquish animals for other reasons such as time constraints, affordability, relocating, etc. I have seen purebreds, small breeds, and breeds with non-aggressive temperaments. Once I was a service-dog trainer, I was able to select dogs from the local shelters. There are responsible/reputable animal shelters and humane societies that provide temperament evaluations, have trainers on-site, and provide post-adoption support. You just need to find out if they provide those services and review their temperament evaluation and medical notes on the animal.
This is a very sad video, but so very much needed. I wish more people understood exactly what you are talking about. Dogs are primal animals that are genetically hard coded.
This honestly scares me to death. I have a female pit bull around 80 lbs. She's almost 3 yrs old and I've had her since she was about 12 weeks old. I've worked and worked with her since the day i got her. She is very well behaved in the house and outside. However, she's not perfect, she does have a high prey drive, likes to chase neighbors cats, and gets into small fights with my 11 yr old dachshund. In the fights, there is never any latching on to each other or blood. It is more like just squabbles, a lot of noise over bones, toys, or areas in the house. When this happens, i usually just say a word or two that she knows i mean business and the fighting stops. However, i still never leave them in the same room when nobody is home. I don't believe she would ever hurt my little dog, but never hurts to use caution. I guess what im getting at is, I am definitely not the right "type"of person to own these dogs. ( 130 lb female) But so far she has been a really good dog. But i see so much about these dogs just losing it and hurting someone. Am i supposed to get rid of her or euthanize her just bc others of the same breed have done awful things. Even though she's been a good dog. It's just all very confusing and scary.
Is that a rhetorical question? No , imo you don’t get rid of your dog because you hear or read scary stories. I think if you know the nature of the beast, so to speak, that gives you insight into how she is internally wired and manage/train accordingly. ( which you seem to be doing,, not leaving your dogs together etc )Although ( NON expert advice here) I would remove items they resource guard to avoid major conflict between them given the size discrepancy and especially meaty bones because imo it triggers something primal in dogs . ( can you give them your them in separate areas, then after a good chew , remove the bones altogether?) Look, if you’re worried, you can always contact a reputable trainer, for assessment, management strategies and training ,because getting rid of your pit probably is a death sentence for her at a shelter . Getting a knowledgeable trainer would perhaps help the new ? anxiety you have over your Pit.
No it's not a rhetorical question. All this talk really does make me feel like I should not have her, but I really do love her. It makes me feel guilty for having this breed. I could never get rid of her unless she hurt a child or another animal. Even then, it would break my heart. It's just confusing bc there are some good ones that never hurt anything but yet we are made to feel we shouldn't have them. Made to feel that they will eventually just snap and do horrible things. But, thank you for all the good suggestions. I will try them.

I live in the area where these recent attacks in Tennessee happened. Everything you said about shelters pushing “pit bull” type dogs is absolutely true! The shelters here are loaded with them. The do push them. Numerous rescues pull them out of shelters and sell them for exorbitant adoption fees. One of my dogs was attacked by one of these rescues.
@APBT The Best nice try. Notice you don't deny anything I said. Other than you didn't like my word choice. I grew up with these dogs. I've seen the ugly side of the breeds history. If people fully understood what a typical pitbull terrier mix is today. They wouldn't let them into their homes. Rescues are profiting off of these people by picking up animals at shelters for nothing, then selling them for profit. I really hope someone helps rehab the breed. I just don't buy the Rescue hype. Frankly, I think it's dangerous.
@APBT The Best yeah, that's unfortunate. That rhetoric isn't going to help your cause. You sound like a breeder. Hopefully, if you are, you are selecting stable temperament for breeding. There are a lot of good qualities in the breed. Honesty about the breeds history is required to save it. I believe it's possible to produce pit bull terriers that are reliable farm dogs and companions. I believe that can only be done by ethical breeders dedicated to the breed. Rescues are generally not helpful for the reputation of the breed.
Hello. Worked in a shelter after retirement. You used the word trigger. I saw a 36 lb kill a120 lb great Dane in approx 10 min. These dogs just snap and you better have a gun. I thank you and pray for the children. Don't stop with this topic. Much thanks once again. Ron z.
We had our Great Pyrenees ripped apart when a pack of 5 pits jumped our fence and ripped her apart in just a few mins. We heard them and ran out to get them off her. Metal shovels would not make them stop. It was horrifying. I think anyone that wants to own them needs their head examined.
Pitbulls are animal aggressive not human aggressive. People forget that Pitbulls are Terriers. Terriers are animal aggressive and all round farm dogs. So yea the prey drive is intense. But never human aggressive

@@KennyMcCI know I’m so shocked 😳 I can’t believe that a Doberman haves the least most attacks, I watch this man here on RUclips called Doberman planet and that’s where I learn so much information of the dobie because next year I’m getting a female European Doberman and he made a video of how the dobies are super judge and when He showed a chart of the most to least I was shocked that a lab haves more attack than a lab. When I was much younger, I loved big dogs: shepherds, Dobies, boxers, etc. I also was not the most knowledgeable about dogs in general. But even so, I knew that the big dogs I loved would not be a good fit for me. So the companion dogs I ended up with over the years were small to medium pooches that I was confident I could work with. I've had a toy poodle, a Keeshond, a Shiba inu and three Pomeranians (over several years). They have all been good dogs for me and brought me much enjoyment.
I’m bless that my dog is obedient and train from day one I begin my training with her. I do not allow kids around her. I got a kennel in my home. I have visitors. She goes in her crate bottom line, and they are in responsible I have seen it with my own eyes and it’s so sad. Thank you for being a trainer. I learned a lot from trainers and I continue to train her.

It is always a enlightenment to hear you. Someone reasently sugested getting my dog accepted as an service dog so she could help me out whith my social anxiety. But i would never do that, i love her to death and she is lovely but i know her and she is not at all well suited for such a task. Way too many fake service dogs are out there and i would hate adding my own beloved dog as one of them

they are in shelters for a reason...do NOT adopt these vicious dogs. One elderly lady took a dog from a grandson to keep it for a while. Her husband went to the back yard and found her eaten. Do beagles eat people? How about Welsh Corgis. Pit Bulls cannot be domesticated. They are more of a threat than a timber wolf.
As a Pit Bull type dog owner I want to thank you for being realistic and honest. Not everyone should own a Shepherd Type, not everyone should own a Pit Bull type etc. People need to set their ego and emotions aside and be real with what is a good fit for them and their environment and what level of interaction and training they are realistically capable of. There are breed specific behaviors 100% and some people are incapable of dealing with them. These animals are no joke and people need a reality check.
Yep. Can't love genetics away, you have to understand what you're getting and manage them accordingly. -- I got a Corso a year ago and knew I really had to level up if I wanted this breed. (which I certainly have) She's great and so easy to train. But if you don't understand that territory is Everything to this breed you're likely to have a disaster on your hands.
Here's the problem, zero mistake dog. Don't leave the door open, don't leave the window down on the car where it can jump out, keep focused when walking it on a leash, on and on. All people make mistakes and that's when others get killed.

No such thing as pitbull type. Pitbull is a breed. Pitbull type dog means you have a mixed dog not a breed. Real pitbull are purebred with bloodlines and pedigree

go take basic dog obedience classes... basic training is NOT taken by dog owners in most all cases. I have lived it for 25-30 years and took basic, intermediate and advanced classes as well as CGC certification for 3 of my dogs ... they are 'lower animals' ... not part of your family.
I've known this about dogs since I was 15 years old. That's why I don't own any dog breed and I never will especially the pitbull.

Such a sad story. Awesome podcast. Sadly people get dogs they can't handle. I currently have a Malinois and raised Dobermans for over 30 years and trained all my dogs to respect the children in my household. I still NEVER left them alone with children and their training went on for their lifetime. It was never one and done. In a perfect storm situation, even a well trained dog can be triggered.
Absolutely...... when you have small kids in the home and medium to large dogs. They should always always always be watched. Even if you have had him for 9 weeks and he has grown up with the child.

I respect you so much. A couple of years ago you gave me some very tough advice regarding my Mal (then) puppy and my little boy that really pushed me to train the dog how he needed to be trained. If you had not been as blunt about it, I don’t think I would have realized how precarious of a situation it was. Fortunately, you were blunt and it startled me into diving into training him with the help of a Mal experienced trainer. So, thank you for being the way you are because it really helped us out a lot. He isn’t a perfect dog but I understand him and his body language. He has great recall and listens 99% of the time. Your advice did that for us.

People need to start being honest about what they can handle and take all family members into consideration. Better safe than sorry
If everyone in the family can manage the family dog every other human/ beast will be ok because the dog is managed responsibly all the time. I see families where one family member can handle the dog but everyone else can't and that leaves a big window of opportunity for something bad to happen when that one person is away. Also, sometimes the one who can handle the dog is in denial when the other members complain about not being able to control the dog on their own

People also need to absolutely stop making children responsible for dogs. It's ok to have them help, but if you bring a dog into your home, you as the adult need to be the primary care taker.
I was at the park yesterday with my puppy. She's 12 weeks and we are working on socialization. The park was unusually busy and we were hanging back trying to keep her away from all the commotion allowing her to adjust and settle. But it became apparent we needed to leave. As I'm telling my son we have to go, some kid (Maybe 10?) Walks up with her pocket bully on a leash. But she let her dog get right in my dogs face. Fortunately Ivy stayed chill, but I could tell she wasn't happy about it. And she started to jump for him. I picked her up and walked away and told the kid to not let her dog approach anyone or any dog without permission. Had she not been a kid I'd have gone off.
My dog is a Corso, had she been bigger her dog could have gotten hurt.
I wad like where is your mother/father and why do they think its ok for a kid to walk a dog in a park full of kids. Bad idea

The dogs look uncomfortable. Their pain level must be very high. They can't breathe. Is this not why they get fractious. Humans who have malformed bodies deformed snouts etc. Get grumpy. Breeding is the trouble.
I respected you to begin with but after this sincere and courageous podcast, Robert, I absolutely love you. You will take heat over it but you have the integrity and heart to say it. I am a trainer with more than 50 years experience with reactive dogs and the silliness of dog saviors has to stop.

When I was growing up we had a pitbull. He was a great dog. One day he growled at my brother who was two. He did not see the next meal at our house. We took him to the vet who had expressed he just loved him and if we ever needed to rehome, he would take him. The man had some foresight. Fast forward i adopted a lab mix from the shelter. Later i found she had been a return. She was fearful and was agressive anytime another dog barked at her, came home snd twice tore up my older dog. One morning, she woke up and went nuts again, unprovoked, I got bitten, the other dog was bitten. That was it. We euthanized her that day. The vet later told me he had been scared of her.....why did he stay silent? This has been a great talk and i so wish more trainers would be this open and honest.

It is not helpful to use the word "aggressive", they likely weren't aggressive at all. People then think they are in the clear as long as their dogs aren't "aggressive", not many dogs show themselves to be aggressive. The reason pitbulls and similar dogs end up in headlines is simply because they are "capable", when something happens and they attack- whether they are triggered to be predatory or feel threatened and turn defensive or whatever (which absolutely any dog can), they make headlines because the damage that follows is significant. Calling them aggressive just totally misses the point, I'm sure they were not.
I really appreciate what you are doing here. As a delivery driver, I see it all the time, and the most stressful part of my job is risking my life and limb to serve these people who have no idea how to properly handle their animals.

Our rescue told us our dog was a boxer/hound mix(we have owned a boxer in the past) we knew what we were in for. No boxer in our dog, she ended up being a pit/chow mix. We had planned on having a trainer anyways when she hit 5months but we ended up having the trainer coming sooner. She has structure, boundaries etc. I was taught to pay close attention to her body language etc. thank you for speaking on this! It is so needed.

Unfortunately, the parents were staunch pitbull advocates and bought the two pits as puppies. Recently I've discovered there are tons of poorly bred, aggressive pitbulls in my apartment complex and their owners got around the breed restrictions and pet rent by claiming they're service dogs. People are dangerously dumb.

I don't 4 a second think a stranger or others she is unfamiliar with are safe. 750 psi of bite force is extremely dangerous in itself. She can kill in seconds. It’s actually not true that they were guilted into getting the pitbulls. Although you’re right that is the most likely scenario, especially considering shelters these days. But the father actually got them from a breeder as puppies, and seemed to enjoy the aggressive characteristics, calling them “house lions”. He spoke out against breed specific legislation, and was seemingly very naive about it. He just didn’t think they would attack his family. But they did.

If people became liable for their dogs actions you would see pitbull ownership decline to zero, people know these dogs are dangerous and kill people and peoples pets even if they don't admit it outloud and the statistics are undeniable. Everywhere pitbulls are banned dog bites and deaths are dramatically lower on a statistically large level.

Robert you are absolutely correct and I say that as a pit bull owner. Thank you, it is so important that these dogs go to homes that understand what care and training they require. I love all dogs but I never ever trusted any dog (and I have had many) to be alone with my children or my grandchildren
That's exactly how it should be ! When I was a kid, my grandfather had pitbulls and ALLLL I wanted to do was stay outside & play with them or bring them out for walks one at a time. My gram NEVER allowed me to go out in that yard alone. And anytime I was out there, my grandfather had a gun ready.. I never understood it when I was a kid. The dogs were completely friendly, loved me and "I" never even thought about one of them attacking me.. After growing up around so many different dogs though, I understand now.. no matter what, you never know what a dog may decide to do at any given time.. All I would have taken was one of those dogs being in a bad mood, maybe pissed off at another dog it couldn't get to & decide to grab me instead. Because it's going to release that energy/aggression SOMEHOW. For the record though, I've still never been attacked or bitten by ANY pitbulls !! I've had nothing but good experiences, aside from a few dog scraps here & there. But too many people have had horrible experiences with them because of lousy owner's..

I worked for specialty, emergency hospitals and Animal Control as a licensed veterinary technician. My career spanned close to 20 years, and I have worked with almost every breed at some point. We need to be able to evaluate a dog’s behavior in 5 min or less; especially shelter dogs where we had to walk out to the kennels take them out of their runs with no assistance and bring them in to see the veterinarian. There are breed traits, which can also be exacerbated by being in a shelter or hospital environment. I have seen veterinarians and veterinary staff attacked. I have also seen COUNTLESS dog attacks by all breeds, seen COUNTLESS dogs die from dog attacks, and have seen owners who have been attacked from trying to break up fights especially at dog parks. I have also seen an owner who was a “repeat offender” ( a cop) who owned FIVE female pits who always fought. He brought in three the first time and two weeks later he brought just two and had pepper sprayed them to stop the fight, and we had to take care of them after being pepper sprayed. So breed traits and behavior IS REAL, and it can be very dangerous.

I agree. No dog should be left unsupervised with little kids, no matter what breed. I recently saw a video where they showed a toddler hitting the dog in the face to demonstrate how good their pitbull was with little ones. They are actually training the dog and kid for an attack.

HERE is the difference between a pit bull attack and other dog attacks. The average dog will stop when reprimanded. Pits are relentless once they choose their target.
It’s not jaw strength. It’s about their relentless explosive attacks that don’t stop until they kill it or they are killed. It’s called gameness. It’s what Pits were bred to do. Get a book and read up so you can stop embarrassing yourself.
Pit bulls do not lock their jaws, but due to their "gameness" trait, they rather die than to let go. This trait ensures success in the dog-fighting ring. They have a wide jaw structure (it appears they are smiling) and are able to breath/pant while hanging onto their victim's flesh; to ultimately wear down their opponents. The panting allows pit bulls not to overheat so their chances of "winning" during the fight increases. These pit bull breed traits supersede any other dog breeds' bite pressure.

Let's start with getting your language correct. Under the law you are the OWNER of a dog and legally responsible as such. We are NOT pet parents and they are NOT fur babies. They are a dog, an animal with instincts & behaviors that need to be shaped,trained and controlled to live safely in conjunction with us.
When you think you are a parent and an animal is a baby, you are humanizing them. That is dangerous. Discontinue...they are NOT children.

I am so so glad that you are taking this approach. Families with young children should not have these kinds of dogs. Even if the dog is well trained, it is still a dog, and it isn't just the big dogs. There are many dog breeds, especially nervous terriers that will be problematic with children. The people that disagree are the people that say, I buy my dog all of these toys, but once he gets the squeaker out, he won't play with it anymore. Do they even understand why a squeak toy is so popular? No. Unless they have rat dogs and live on farm. If they watched just one video about rat dogs in action, they would see the dog pick up a rat, shake it, and it squeaks like a toy. And then, you'll see two dogs pulling a rat apart, and playing tug of war, and you'll understand why the rope toy is popular. But when we saw dogs doing this kind of behavior, we think it's cute and funny.
Unfortunately, these behaviors are hardwired: certain breeds more than others. But if you have very young children squealing and laughing or crying, that can sound like a prey animal to a dog; like a rat, or a rabbit. My friend many years ago used to babysit for a family with a large do, and a 3 year old. One weekend when she wasn't babysitting, the dog attacked and mauled the year old. The child lived, but basically needed facial reconstruction, over 100 stitches. The father killed the dog; but it was this same situation; if you take a large dog with a very powerful bite and mix it with terrier, it isn't safe around a baby, no matter.
I totally agree with you about training, and long leads. I usually have shepherds or sheepdogs. My last and current dogs are Shelties. I think a Sheltie is also a good bet for a family dog. I've seen my previous dog do absolutely nothing, when my toddler used his back to pull himself up. The only problem this dog has around children, is that he will herd them. Poodles are a good, I grew up with one. But they can be highstrung. I would never have another one.
As someone looking in from the outside (I volunteer in cat rescue), I find it hard to understand why people who claim to "love dogs" continue to defend dogs that are notorious for their aggression towards other dogs, often killing them or inflicting terrible injuries on them.

I got bit when I was 10 yrs old, wasn't a pit bull, it was a shepherd mix. 365 stitches, many trips to plastic surgeon. If I learned anything from that day, is don't trust any animal. Never put your hand near it, or your face. I don't care if its your dog or not, or that you think you know the dog well. The dog that bit me I had been feeding all summer long while its owners were away on vacation. I almost lost my right eye to a dog I thought I knew. Thank you for information, and taking the time to teach stuff I found very helpful.

My Rescue Mals were reactive to other dogs. Positive training wasn't helping. Then I was injured in front of them.and they became reactive to people. 3 weeks with an Afghan war Vet dog trainer. They became the best behaved Dogs at Any of the Dog Park We visit. Why? E Collar and training me how to be the Boss.

Since I've started amateur dog training, I've had multiple people tell me about being bitten (some losing fingers) by thier own dogs. 90% were a pitbull or mix. The owners are ashamed to admit that their loved dogs bite family! And most keep them!
Numbers don’t lie!! Why do pitbulls kill or maim so much more than other large, dangerous breeds? Because it’s what they were biologically selected to do. As I said in another comment, it’s not fair to the dogs. It’s like not letting a bird fly; it’s an innate, biological drive that WE created in them. And what outlet can we possibly give them to allow them to exhibit those behaviors in a safe way?? People need to face reality here. I’m sure there are responsible owners who would be capable of keeping well-bred pits, but those people and those dogs are few and far between. Something has got to give.

I'm 56 and I have been a trainer all my adult life and for the last 16yrs I have trained exclusively Pitbull's and Bully's and I am here to tell you Robert is on point. I have 9 in my home right now. they have never bitten anyone but I also don't let them be around children. When I take one to town with me my 39 yr old son and I have eyes on them at all times and NO you can't pet my dog! just like you can't touch me or my son.

Someone’s loose dog can approach yours. Every disaster that ever happened had the exact same answer. My dog NEVER did that! It’s was a slip up! I wasn’t paying attention for a second. The best solution is to simply not have land sharks. If you insist on having them it’s your ego bursting out. There are thousands of great nice dogs. No one needs bullies. They just don’t.
I had a beautiful bullmastiff who had great training, loved people, and loved dogs. Then, she would see a small child and a prey drive like no other would rear it's face. Serious prey drift. Horrible situation that no correction or training could help. It was always there. We had to euthanize her. Broke me but had to be done. You could have a "great dog" but then there's an underlying instinct hiding. You are %100 Robert. Look for the signs, be intouch with reality, and understand that it's a dog with animal instincts. Bad breeding hides behaviors, traits, and instinct drives. Robert, your great videos and training walked me through my ptsd over this. Thank you.
We had family members that had a similar experience with their 2nd or 3rd bull mastiff. Animal had a screw loose and they and the breeder agreed it was best to put her down.

Over the weekend he had an incident at the pet hotel. He was lunging at another dog while they were taking him back to his room and then turned and reacted and bit the pet hotel handler

Thank you! I was screaming inside my head & fighting the urge to interact with people making dumb comments the first time I read about this. I 100% agree. NO WAY there was “no sign” of any problem or aggression. Just no way. Dogs don’t just attack with no warning. These people just either couldn’t or wouldn’t see the reality of their dogs behavior issues &/or temperament. Working in the doggy daycare industry I found one of the biggest issues with dog owners is people are delusional (or just not being honest with themselves) about the reality of their dogs behavior issues &/or temperament.
There are also way too many people out there with dogs they simply cannot handle. Too big, too powerful, too high energy, too stubborn, etc. I also volunteered at a no kill shelter taking the dogs for “walks” (they were actually really hikes) before I started working in the dog daycare industry. 90% of the dogs up for adoption were what would be considered a pit bull, back then. It’s probably still similar.
And what you’re talking about isn’t actual service dogs, they call them “emotional support animals”. Actual service dogs & the people who rely on them have their lives made more difficult by these fake service dogs. Very few dogs have the right temperament to be a real service dog. Emotional support animals have a vest & a bought BS certificate. That’s it’s. If you can’t get on a plane without your cat, maybe flying isn’t for you. If you can’t travel without your mini pony, maybe being a member of society isn’t for you.
I was hoping you would do a video on that incident. I wanted badly to hear what you had to say about it. Its been bothering me tremendously ever since I heard about the incident. Thank you for this Robert. It brought tears to my eyes and you covered a lot of important points. Made me think a bit more and question some things I never really thought of before and you helped me make a decision Ive been stewing on for several months now. Thank you for your honesty and willingness to talk about difficult topics like violent dogs and fighting lines and game lines mixed into some pit bull dogs and shelter dogs. My husband and I have adopted both an English Bulldog and an American Bulldog from foster situations BEFORE we moved to be near our young grandchildren. Our dogs were much older senior in fact and we were very, very careful to keep the dogs closely supervised and the grandchildren safe. When the two dogs passed on we decided to purchase a puppy from a breeder. We did a lot of homework to select a good breeder and looked for health and soundness as our top criteria. We chose a Rough Coated Collie, like Lassie. We chose a dog breed that was intelligent, gentle and loyal and very sweet natured. The dog is a true joy and a great friend with the grandkids.We have learned so much from listening to your program.
THANK YOU for being honest about breed specific dangers. Rescues, shelters and advocates for these problem breeds need to wake up and become responsible humans.
I adopted a rescued GSD mix “puppy” and the prey drive was high! I have a small child and she lunged and snapped at him repeatedly when I tried to take her for a walk. She didn’t even look at him before turning and lunging at him. She bit me repeatedly, twice with enough pressure to bruise. The trainer, animal control, and vet all told me to send her back or put her down. The rescue tried so hard to make me keep her, but i stood firm. The rescue took her back, but I made sure to let them know her bite history, high prey drive, and behavior risk.

Yup, I have a bully/cattle mix rescue. Two high prey drive dogs in one small package. I trained and trained, trained ( and still training ) she is amazing now. As you said, I do not trust her 100%. Your straight forward truth is a breath of fresh air. Thank you.

It was my good fortune to find Robert Cabral's videos after watching so many other you tube dog training videos. I am using his technique, great technique to train my puppy. Puppy girl is smart, wonderful, large breed dog. She & I work together every day, religiously. Puppy has a great time learning & I, a great time teaching her. Both puppy girl & I got so lucky when I found Robert Cabral. I am confident I am teaching my girl to become a happy, self-confident, well disciplined, welcomed member in a world dominated by humans, simply a must.

Her DNA test revealed Malinois, German shepherd, St. Bernard & husky as her breed combo. Puppy is quite active, has considerable prey drive, while eager to learn, smart & quite beautiful in appearance. Big working puppy. With the right balance of good, consistent training, as offered on this channel, she is recovering, learning to trust & making excellent progress toward our living our best lives together.
I was sitting on a bench in the foyer of my vet's office a few years ago...my cat was silent, in a hard plastic carrier next to me. A woman and little boy age 4(?) entered the clinic with a lovely tan & white female pit mix on leash. Their dog was alert, quiet but calm, and well-behaved....sat by the lady's side as she talked to the receptionist. I was people and critter-watching....
Suddenly, I saw a total change in body posture of the pretty pit mix, she locked her eyes and whole focus on the cat carrier next to me. My old cat hadn't meowed or anything.... I think the dog just caught his scent....really mind boggling, she was now animated and straining at the leash. I moved the carrier slowly farther away and braced myself....luckily, the dog was taken to the back by staff. If the owner's little boy picked up a neighbor's cat near that dog, I don't want to think what would happen. As a lifelong animal handler, it was one of the most disturbing body language shifts I ever saw...

Why did a couple with 2 smLl children want two fighting dogs. Surely 2 soft dogs would've been best. I don't think dogs should be introduced into any family until both kids ate over 7 yrs old. A dog never exceeds human mental age of 7. I saw a totally stressed rescue mastiff with a woman with a baby. She'd put it on a nose torture device. I said. That dogs face is full of anxiety and pain. She said. Well now the baby was born I need it to not pull me. Poor dog. Baby and mama are now here. I was amazed a pregnant couple adopted a huge strong dog. Why. When baby arrives is dog really wanted. So sad. They're not accessories.

Retired LEO K9 handler, and EDD handler in Iraq. I have been so sick over this attack since I heard about it. I absolutely agree that pit bulls do not belong in a house with kids. Period. I’ve heard the “breed” comments, and my answer is yes, all dogs have the ability to bite, even attack. However, the pits have the strength and aggression to literally rip people apart. I love dogs and would never have a pit.
Thank you for your service. When I was in the Air Force, I had a friend who was a dog handler. He told me there was a reason that pitbulls were not used. He also mentioned that their unpredictable nature made them too much of a liability. Like in this awful case😞
I’ve been sick over it as well. I literally lost sleep the night I heard of it. These dogs should be banned, unless with a permit. They do not belong with a family. It’s a heartbreaking tragedy that should not have been legally allowed.
I’m so tired of children being mauled to death by this breed. But it’s not just children- it’s vulnerable adults as well. Men in their prime have been mauled to death while having a seizure multiple times in the past year. Older adults have been torn to shreds. Innocent bystanders die all the time. They shouldn’t be allowed.

When my son was little, the dogs that worried me most, were the ones that had an owner saying don't worry about their child loving dog. I always thought those people were insane not to realize a dog is a dog. I trust exactly no dog completely around young kids.

I was attacked by 2 pit bulls on 13th May 2024. They tried to kill my little JRT too. I will live my life time and never forget it. It’s really changed my life. More people should be passing this information along... It's too bad there are dog owners that are in denial... My daughter was/is one... She wouldn't listen to me, despite my experience with military and law enforcement K9's.... Now, their loving first dog is dead, an injured family member is lucky to be alive, and her Akita that she let do whatever it wanted, no training except basic obedience when it was young, was euthanized...
We ALL tried to warn her about the negative traits of an Akita, and having a powerful dog like that with kids, and needing daily training, but all she saw was the famous dog in Japan that waited for it's owner (that died of a heart attack) at the train station until it died...

Grew up with an Akita GSD Timber Wolf cross who everyone said would be aggressive and not good with kids. He definitely needed strong leadership but he was awesome with us kids and farm animals. Knowing what I know now? We got really lucky and I was also very lucky with my other two GSD crosses. I suppose my overconfidence in my connection with animals worked out but it very well could have worked out differently. So sad for people who get a dog who is too much dog for them. I still have a soft spot for Akita’s GSD and wolf crosses. Luckily they don’t breed wolves and dogs much anymore. Not fair to the animals to experiment like that.
My brother's children were raised with a male Akita. His youngest was three years old. I have seen her push and shove him out of her room. He would never hurt her. She was never left alone with him but they were raised together. I only met the dog as an adult and my brother left him with me all the time. My elderly mother lived with him and the dog never bothered him. My brother did not let him do whatever he wanted. He is strict with dogs. His Akita liked hanging out with the children. He would get excited when they came home from school. It is sad your family had that experience. Akita's require a firm hand.

My daughter had pits. I was afraid of him. But he was a well trained dog. I had to learn how to handle him. Agree with a dog with kids in the house. You just can’t leave them alone with them. People need this education. This is my second time watching. Learning so much. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I am a game hunter. i just want people to know that when we have game hunting Pitbulls or any other game breeds any of the dogs that show dog to dog aggression we put them down. they are not part of the standard. in game hunting dogs need to be focused on the game. dogs must have the mentality to work together regardless of the environment not against each other. we also have strict rules and managemental skills in living with game dogs. we never ever send these dogs to non game homes or people with kids. however there are many irresponsible people in gaming hunting all they do is breed take what they want they sell the rest of puppies as they call them useless. god knows where these potentially dangerous puppies go. as for me puppies that dont make the cut we humanely put them down not sell them cheaply to the public knowing the future issues of these pups.

This is the best, most informative info I’ve heard about the dangers of this class of dogs. I think this should be required listening for families before they go out to adopt! These dogs need to stay in trained hands who know what to watch for- for the safety of families and the wellbeing of the dog.
I have been training dogs, horses, or both for over 50 years (yes, I am old, LOL). I have always used 95 % positive training methods but I also know there have to be corrections and consequences. I SO appreciate your perspective and common sense. I completely agree with everything you say. I have been preaching the fact that Pitties are hard-wired, genetically predisposed to fight. One of my clients had 5-year-old Am Staff that would no longer allow him on his bed! Good grief!

This is one of the many reasons why I don't adopt from shelters and never will. Not only do they try to trick you into buying a pit bull, but they often gloss over behavioral issues. If buying from a good breeder makes me immoral, so be it. I would much rather keep myself and my family safe with our cute and loving pomeranian we got from a breeder than having shelters try selling me a potentially dangerous animal.
I have always adopted from animal shelters and have found the best dogs. People think that shelters only have dogs filled with pit bull types or other dangerous breeds. That's a myth or huge misconception. People relinquish animals for other reasons such as time constraints, affordability, relocating, etc. I have seen purebreds, small breeds, and breeds with non-aggressive temperaments. Once I was a service-dog trainer, I was able to select dogs from the local shelters. There are responsible/reputable animal shelters and humane societies that provide temperament evaluations, have trainers on-site, and provide post-adoption support. You just need to find out if they provide those services and review their temperament evaluation and medical notes on the animal.
This is a very sad video, but so very much needed. I wish more people understood exactly what you are talking about. Dogs are primal animals that are genetically hard coded.

This honestly scares me to death. I have a female pit bull around 80 lbs. She's almost 3 yrs old and I've had her since she was about 12 weeks old. I've worked and worked with her since the day i got her. She is very well behaved in the house and outside. However, she's not perfect, she does have a high prey drive, likes to chase neighbors cats, and gets into small fights with my 11 yr old dachshund. In the fights, there is never any latching on to each other or blood. It is more like just squabbles, a lot of noise over bones, toys, or areas in the house. When this happens, i usually just say a word or two that she knows i mean business and the fighting stops. However, i still never leave them in the same room when nobody is home. I don't believe she would ever hurt my little dog, but never hurts to use caution. I guess what im getting at is, I am definitely not the right "type"of person to own these dogs. ( 130 lb female) But so far she has been a really good dog. But i see so much about these dogs just losing it and hurting someone. Am i supposed to get rid of her or euthanize her just bc others of the same breed have done awful things. Even though she's been a good dog. It's just all very confusing and scary.

I think if you know the nature of the beast, so to speak, that gives you insight into how she is internally wired and manage/train accordingly. ( which you seem to be doing,, not leaving your dogs together etc )Although ( NON expert advice here) I would remove items they resource guard to avoid major conflict between them given the size discrepancy and especially meaty bones because imo it triggers something primal in dogs . ( can you give them your them in separate areas, then after a good chew , remove the bones altogether?)
Look, if you’re worried, you can always contact a reputable trainer, for assessment, management strategies and training ,because getting rid of your pit probably is a death sentence for her at a shelter .
Getting a knowledgeable trainer would perhaps help the new ? anxiety you have over your Pit.
No it's not a rhetorical question. All this talk really does make me feel like I should not have her, but I really do love her. It makes me feel guilty for having this breed. I could never get rid of her unless she hurt a child or another animal. Even then, it would break my heart. It's just confusing bc there are some good ones that never hurt anything but yet we are made to feel we shouldn't have them. Made to feel that they will eventually just snap and do horrible things. But, thank you for all the good suggestions. I will try them.

I live in the area where these recent attacks in Tennessee happened. Everything you said about shelters pushing “pit bull” type dogs is absolutely true! The shelters here are loaded with them. The do push them. Numerous rescues pull them out of shelters and sell them for exorbitant adoption fees. One of my dogs was attacked by one of these rescues.
@APBT The Best nice try. Notice you don't deny anything I said. Other than you didn't like my word choice. I grew up with these dogs. I've seen the ugly side of the breeds history. If people fully understood what a typical pitbull terrier mix is today. They wouldn't let them into their homes. Rescues are profiting off of these people by picking up animals at shelters for nothing, then selling them for profit.
I really hope someone helps rehab the breed. I just don't buy the Rescue hype. Frankly, I think it's dangerous.
@APBT The Best yeah, that's unfortunate. That rhetoric isn't going to help your cause. You sound like a breeder. Hopefully, if you are, you are selecting stable temperament for breeding. There are a lot of good qualities in the breed. Honesty about the breeds history is required to save it. I believe it's possible to produce pit bull terriers that are reliable farm dogs and companions. I believe that can only be done by ethical breeders dedicated to the breed. Rescues are generally not helpful for the reputation of the breed.

Hello. Worked in a shelter after retirement. You used the word trigger. I saw a 36 lb kill a120 lb great Dane in approx 10 min. These dogs just snap and you better have a gun. I thank you and pray for the children. Don't stop with this topic. Much thanks once again. Ron z.
We had our Great Pyrenees ripped apart when a pack of 5 pits jumped our fence and ripped her apart in just a few mins. We heard them and ran out to get them off her. Metal shovels would not make them stop. It was horrifying. I think anyone that wants to own them needs their head examined.
Pitbulls are animal aggressive not human aggressive. People forget that Pitbulls are Terriers. Terriers are animal aggressive and all round farm dogs. So yea the prey drive is intense. But never human aggressive

When I was much younger, I loved big dogs: shepherds, Dobies, boxers, etc. I also was not the most knowledgeable about dogs in general. But even so, I knew that the big dogs I loved would not be a good fit for me. So the companion dogs I ended up with over the years were small to medium pooches that I was confident I could work with. I've had a toy poodle, a Keeshond, a Shiba inu and three Pomeranians (over several years). They have all been good dogs for me and brought me much enjoyment.
I’m bless that my dog is obedient and train from day one I begin my training with her. I do not allow kids around her. I got a kennel in my home. I have visitors. She goes in her crate bottom line, and they are in responsible I have seen it with my own eyes and it’s so sad. Thank you for being a trainer. I learned a lot from trainers and I continue to train her.

It is always a enlightenment to hear you. Someone reasently sugested getting my dog accepted as an service dog so she could help me out whith my social anxiety. But i would never do that, i love her to death and she is lovely but i know her and she is not at all well suited for such a task. Way too many fake service dogs are out there and i would hate adding my own beloved dog as one of them
