Mowing tall grass with a REEL MOWER. What happens
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 ноя 2017
- In this video I wanted to show what will happen when you try to mow your average homeowner tall cut lawn with a greens mower. This mower is designed to cut the grass on a putting green so its capable of cutting very low.
When you try to mow your lawn with this greens mower and the grass is over an inch or so, tall the grass blades tend to get folded over and do not get cut evenly.
The trick to mowing with this mower is to mow often and frequent. This will keep the grass short and will the cut will look better.

lol "tall grass", tall grass for us is when it starts hitting your knees and that when you know it needs to be cut.
aronpayne1977
Lol
I also came here to see some tall grass (in my head like 10cm) mowing, lol.
Hahaha 1.25 inches is long? Hahaha must be in an hoa with grass height requirements. Looks like a nice grass carpet though
I thought my dad was into his lawn, then I saw this guy...
You are definitely one of those "get off my lawn" guys
It still looks great pal! Thanks for sharing.
Damn man. Might as well install carpet in your yard 😂
thats not tall grass
Acoustic Vibe I'm thinking the same thing.
Acoustic Vibe true story I sometimes get tall weeds in mine looking for reel mower tips cause it just folds over and springs back up.
Ikr
Great lawn.
Anyone who's this concerned with 1" TALL grass, probably doesn't have enough in their life to worry about.
😂😂
Must be nice
Good video, thanks for sharing.
Love your videos brotha
1:44 nice headlight on the mower. I installed a smaller version on mine for when it gets dark early here in the US.
2:23 that's an impressive garden fence
+aguyandhiscomputer. Thanks. I love the headlight. I use it for dusk time and shoulder seasons. Those pesky deer used to destroy everything in my garden before I installed that fence. Yes your right... A round off... She made sure I knew the right terminology.
I've learned this over the past month with some of the taller areas of my yard. I have to push mow those with the manual reel, and then once it's lower, I'll hit it with the Flex. I wish I had the level yard you do my friend. Soon, very soon. I can't wait until Spring.
+ColonelK0rn. Yep. I normally have to go over at least once more time in a perpendicular pattern to get all the tall scraggly stuff. Sand, time, and patience my friend.. You'll get there. Thanks for watching.
I did chuckle at the cartwheel your daughter did at the end to punctuate your line. :D
ColonelK0rn
I don't want to be that guy but it's technically a round off based on how she landed with both feet. But yes, good demonstration :)
You call that tall grass!? I mow when the grass is 3 inches or more , I would never mow my lawn that short the heat from the sun will quickly kill the grass
Grass is 1.5”
“My grass is kinda long”
Said nobody ever.
Does this mower not have a slower pace? Wonder if there is a different result if you were to mow slower...
I've come to the conclusion this is a sickness. People that have absolutely nothing else to do in life, like myself, than to worry about a couple blades of grass that are too high. We need to have like grassoholics anonymous or something. "Hi my name is Bill, and I let my grass get over an inch last week." "Hi Bill".
I am an addict
Wait, that's tall??? I came here because my grass is seriously tall (like actually tall - not this) but gas is expensive. I already own a reel mower so I figured I'd give it a try. Was kinda hoping for some tips and tricks about how to cut TALL grass with a reel mower. I guess I'll just see what happens. Will probably have to go over it 50 million times. But it seems like I remember it would lay some down. So maybe it'll take several mowing sessions. IDK
That grass is so perfect it doesn't even look real. I've never seen a yard look that perfect before.
This was no help lol
Most places recommend maintaining turf between 3.5-4 inches. Less than 2 inches is NOT tall, and isn't healthy for your lawn.
An inch to an inch and a half is tall?!
In my case. Yes
@@lawnrebel wtf you live in a weird world if you call inch and a half grass tall
I cut mine with my reel push mower when the grass was well over a foot. Cut to around 7 inches or so. It would bend.
Then I cut it again later, got it down to 1/2 inch.
Mine is not powered...
I have a real push mower and it’s not cutting well. Keeps getting jammed and ended u using weed whacked instead. I adjusted it here and there. What am I doing wrong?
You can buy hight cut front rollers for them.
if one takes a cord and ties one end to the roller or roller rod pulls it tight and ties the other end to the handle one can raise the cutting height as high as 9 inches to cut grass as high as a foot. then one can put a cam or turnbuckle in this cord for adjusting the height. this makes your reel ~33% faster than a gas mower. this can be done for $5 in 5 minutes. i have 4 working models. go to facebook and type "tom d sherman" into search to get the details.
to experiment all one has to do is remove the reel's roller, tie a cord then to the exposed roller rod, pull back the other end and cinch it to the handle for a simple working device. don't let the picture with the wooden extension throw you off . that is the ideal. all you need to do is connect the pictured cord and turnbuckle directly to the roller rod. you can make the wooden thing at a later time.
go to tom d sherman on facebook then noise reduction. you can then scroll down to the section starting "the modified . . . ." to see more advanced instructions.
* * facebook.com/PLEASENONOISE/ is my fb url. after doing this scroll to section beginning start "the modified reel mower ..."
This is a great video. I wonder what would happen if the grass was already at 5-8 inches. not too dense, dry, and you used a reel mower. Would it cut easily? Jam up immediately? I like to keep my lawn at 3-4 inches in the dry weather.
It would just flatten it, think about it, the front roller hits the grass and at anything over a couple of inches, never mind 5 to 8 inches, it is still pressing the grass flat as the cylinder just passes over the top without touching it.
What store in the SLC area would you recommend for checking out greens mowers?
Just curious my friend, did you end up finding a greens mower source in this area?
What type of grass is that? It's so beautiful. Here in PA I've issued a declaration of war on crabgrass that tore through the yard this summer. I was able to pull 50 lbs of it out by hand before it went to seed. My neighbor believes in natural lawn care, ie weeds are pretty mentality.
+Kelly Davis. Ha ha. Doesn't everybody have that neighbor? I do. 50 lbs of crabgrass huh... that's crazy. Good for you in irradiating it. In the spring be sure to put down a good pre emergent. The grass I have in that video is Kentucky bluegrass. 4 varieties. 3 year old lawn in that video. The front is the same but with perennial ryegrass added.
Hmmm, I guess I'm that neighbor. I love seeing all the violets, clover, strawberries, etc. 🙄 "weeds" are pretty
Would be interesting to see how much better a 7 or 8 blade reel does in the same circumstances. Of course I am assuming that your unit has the typical 11 blade reel?
You are correct. 11 blade. I would like to get the GM1600 that has I think an 8 blade. I am also curious about how much different it would function. Thanks for watching.
Connor Ward , most 26” walk-mowers like the GM1600 or my Jake GK526a are used to mow collars/approaches and tee boxes which are typically mowed at fairway heights around 7/16”-5/8”. (11-16mm). A 7 or 8 blade reel is commonly used at those heights but a fair number of 26” units are either purchased or converted to 11+ blade reels due to the Super’s preference or to be used on greens.
You have some options with your current GM1000 too. You can buy an 8 blade reel for it for about $250, or try a “clip kit” to slow down your 11 blade reel to a more appropriate rate for your cut heights. Can’t help you with the wider stripes and extra 4” of cut tho!
Love your videos and that short KBG!
I use a GM1000 same as a GM1600 modified with the clip kit and 8 blade reel. Other modification is the front roller. This is a grooved steel roller rather than an aluminum roller. This set up is used for maintenance of warm season grasses. Because I am a lawn service rather than a home owner, grass does get above an inch between mowings. The modified GM1000 will mow grass up to 2" with no problems. With the stock 11 blade reel and no clip kit, many blades of un mowed grass would be left behind if used on grass over 1/2 inch tall.
You made the mistake of leaving the roller on the front. To cut long grass with a reel mower you need to remove the roller or convert the roller to wheels to allow the grass blades to get to the bed kinife.
i cut really tall grass with my reel mower it has the wheels
Damnit that’s not tall grass!
what species of grass is that?
Kentucky bluegrass
How did you get your lawn to be so thick?? I can't even see dirt!
Mowing it low does that. It happens automatically.
Connor Ward It doesnt work with rotary mowers right?
That's tall grass?
That's 2 inches shorter than what I cut my grass at
Ummm. My grass is to my knees. Was wanting to see if a manual mower can cut it... This thing is tiny
If you do not mind me asking, why do you mow so low? I actually like to cut my lawn a lot taller than that. More leaf structure leads to more photosynthesis, allowing the grass to focus on growing healthy leaves and deeper roots. The thick lawn also crowds out weeds and shades the soil beneath. This means a lawn that needs less water, less fertilizer, no herbicide and no pesticide.
I like the look better. I would bet that my lawn is thicker than yours and also has less weeds. Likely uses more water than yours but I would definitely say it would be thicker. Less on the photosynthesis for sure as well. I just like the look better than a tall shaggy lawn.
@@lawnrebel Thanks for the reply! I have an organic lawncare playlist you might enjoy sine you are into lawncare. We do differ in style - I like the long grass and use a push reel mower, without herbicide or pesticide. I do have weeds and even overseed with some clover too.
Tall grass?????🤣🤣🤣🤣
That is really really short grass you should mow with the lawn mower set @ 3.75 of an intch just saying.
Yeah I should.
Reel mowers (chox on cox!) I have tried and tried with two different types of non powered reel mowers on my yard, ( and thats not tall grass) They just dont work worth a damn! guess golf courses have to have them for green's,,
"there's your problem"...... Key phrase.... Non powered. Gotta get petrol powered one.
@@lawnrebel At the cost of one,, I could just pay you for the year to keep my grass cut,,lol
Ha ha... Yeah probably
@@lawnrebel I have 2 x £25, 70 year old non powered mowers, (Ransomes "Ajax"), and an £800 gas powered one, (Allett "Classic"), only ever use the push ones, cut like a boss!
I thought you said you were done mowing
I am done. I found some older footage. I have some more footage for later as well.
Hank hill measuring his grass was a joke. We laughed at him. Im laughing at this guy.
Dang, all the snow melted already?
+Wilbur Yuen. Oh man.. I wish that dang snow was gone. This is older footage I found in my footage stash. I found some good stuff for later as well.
At least you're using a proper lawnmower. Not a heathen rotary!
#mowlow
not even close of being tall
Tall for me
@@lawnrebel proof you're insane
This guy has some issues.
Haha nice yard, but not tall
oh my God, stop mowing your lawn and sit on the porch and read a book or something. You ought to see my yard, you'd swear I were living in a jungle.
Tall grass? Dude you can hardly tell that you mowed it. Who cuts their grass that short? Looks stupid. Just put turf down.
U just need to get turf like fake grass type shit because ...just stop it dont make another video plz sir
This guy claims 1 - 1/1/4 inch grass is tall.... BS. Reel mover can cut 5 inches of grass.. You mow back and forth over any part that bends....
Sure... Anything can be cut if you go over it and over it again and again until it's cut. This is the same thing as with any mower. The point is.... It cuts like crap if you try to cut that much off at once
@@lawnrebel BULLSHIT. The only reason to go back and forth is the grass bends. Anyone can make false claims about it cutting like crap. Cutting off too much at a time is not about cutting like crap, but being hard on the grass. Grow a brain.
Now that I've seen the video wrong mower lol.
