What the duo did is arguable. I wouldn't say they respected the heritage at all. They just took some elements. Also, I think he started in the late 60s.
Correct he arrive in Paris in 1965 however he was very much invested in fashion prior to this and founded Kenzo is 1970. It is totally reasonable to disagree with my opinion of the duo’s impact, my point of view is coming from how off base Marras seemed to be when he was in charge, there was a steady decline in revenue with the company barely breaking even by 2011. I don’t think there is any way to say for sure if the duo respected the original brand, but I know that was their intention and the brand has grown in success under their leadership which must count for something. (Again, just my opinion, totally understand how you could think it was just cheap imitation).
@@knowfashion8967 being commercially successful doesn't mean that they were being respectful to what the brand meant. In fact, Kenzo disliked both interpretations. He was just being nice to the duo, but if asked he would say it sometimes, specially outside France. In the case of Marras, he very openly disliked his work, more likely due to the huge resentment he felt towards Arnault, there was court litigation, and as a way to strike back.
As for the time, he already used Kenzo or Kenzo of J.A.P. and worked as designer long before opening that boutique. What he founded in 1970 was likely to be 'Jungle Jap'.
Oh wow, thank you, I was not aware of either of those facts. Part of my goal for the channel (if I ever get around to working on it again 😬) is to share what I know about brands but also to learn from people who have a much deeper understanding of them. Really appreciate the extra context here!
@@knowfashion8967 at the end they made peace, that is why he started attending to the shows but for many years he never showed up. Your video is rather accurate nonetheless and my view is just an opinion. I think the duo got right the spirit of the times, in terms of communicating to a younger audience. But the clothing was hideous. If I have to choose, I like much more the work of Marras for Kenzo, it was more about fabric quality, poetry, bohemianism and attention to detail rather than creating buzz. :-)
