Co-authored in 1982 by Jon Bon Jovi and George Karak, “Runaway” (released in 1984) was Bon Jovi’s first hit. A staple of their live concerts, this glossy and anthemic piece - with a socially conscious message - is one of the band lead vocalist’s favorites. The composition tells the story of a girl who gets so little attention from her parents that she runs away from home and lives on the streets, doing her best to survive. Frequently, Jon Bon Jovi himself would take a Greyhound bus from New Jersey into Manhattan, where he saw a lot of young people trying to get away in utter desperation. Those very youngsters became the inspiration behind “Runaway.” In 1989, a live version was used as the B-side of “Lay Your Hands On Me.” And in 2003, the popular number was introduced to the audience as follows : “If you see this song down at the beach, buy it a drink - it’s finally old enough.” 💜🚌💙
I listened to this song hundreds of times in the 1980s, but now I'm here listening for the Tim Pierce solo. Great to hear his stories about how this recording came about.
in a small town Denmark, i bought this on 12 inch blue see thru vinyl when it came out summer 84 ... 18 yrs old, still have it... it was more awesome than i expected... and still is :)
This is the one song on the album guitars are played by Tim Pierce. This was mastered before Bon Jovi was a band but used on the album. I believe Tim played all guitar parts on this track.
he is such a legend. i chased the tone and flow of this solo for all my teenage years. too bad i had to spend those on a kramer with a very badly set up floyd rose and action.
[Verse 1:] On the street where you live Girls talk about their social lives They're made of lipstick, plastic and paint A touch of sable in their eyes All your life, all your life All you've asked is when's your daddy gonna talk to you But you were living in another world Tryin' to get a message through. [Hook:] No one heard a single word you said. They should have seen it in your eyes What was going around your head. [Chorus:] Ooh, she's a little runaway. Daddy's girl learned fast All those things he couldn't say. Ooh, she's a little runaway. [Verse 2:] A different line every night Guaranteed to blow your mind I see you out on the streets Calling for a wild time So you sit home alone 'Cause there's nothing left that you can do There's only pictures hung in the shadows Left there to look at you You know she likes the lights At night on the neon Broadway signs She don't really mind It's only love she hoped to find [Chorus:] Ooh, she's a little runaway. Runaway was ahead of it's time. Disco and New Wave rules the airways back then. In my opinion Runaway paved the way for the true 80s ROCK SOUND. Real guitars and bass. Real drummers and drums. Real heartfelt and head banging music and lyrics. Remember getting laid to the likes of Bon Jovi. Slaughter. Steelheart. Firehouse. White Snake. Oh ya . White Snake ; Tawney Kitaen. Ok. Stop.
