I collect vintage GI Joe ARAH and the Classified line, with my passion being the vintage line. I was excited to hear Super 7 was bringing an o-ring line out, even though I knew they'd be expensive. That being said, I was really hoping they would move away from the Sunbow cartoon look. I was hoping they would match the aesthetics of the vintage line. Unfortunately, I don't think they do. A lot of that is due to me being a purist and not being able to blend to two looks. In Super 7's defense, I imagine their licensing restricts them to the Sunbow style. If these two just had headsculpts that looked like the vintage figures I would have pre-ordered these in a heartbeat!
I had assumed they were going for the Sunbow look because that's kinda Brian's bread and butter. He always seems to lean into the cartoon look for things. I had hoped it wasn't a licensing issue since Hasbro doesn't seem to be doing anything with the o-ring line themselves. They came out with a few two packs, a HsaLab, and then quit. The Sunbow look, like you, is another reason I've held off on picking up the first wave. The blue comic-book B.A.T. isn't a big deal, it's still a B.A.T. and there are lots of variants of that to begin with. But the other ones, especially Cover Girl, just don't do it for me.
Maybe I'm just not savvy. What's an O-Ring figure? Is that like, when they have the rubberband inside? Those figures look like those old types. I don't see why it would matter if it's Hasbro or not making Joes. It's the characters you like, not the company. I would be more worried about another author beside Hama writing the characters than I would another company making the toys. Those Monstors look super fun. I really dig their old school comercial. I dig their tiny monster figures they come with too. And they're smaller scale too, which i like. Wish they were 4 inches and not 5 and a half, but oh well. They would make great monsters to pit Kaiju against. Wish I had the funds to back it, looks real fun.
Yeah, the o-ring figures are the style of figure of the original 80s line of G.I.Joe and the like. They have that black rubber band, or o-ring, that holds them together and makes their waist move. It's a matter of legacy, Hasbro created G.I.Joe and in essence created the entire concept of the action figure, and I think the way they would approach a line like this would vary from how other companies would. Super7 for example, the ReAction and ReAction+ figures are leaning hard into the designs of the Sunbow cartoon, rather than the original look. And as far as Hama still writing the comic; have you read it lately? Zombies....
